A city like that with a thriving downtown and historic district usually has an industrial district somewhat further away that provides the main income of the town. The sawmill is a start, but maybe some other industries would work as well in that area

An industrial district building on the style of the sawmill could fit well in the free space. Industrial estates tend to be close to logistics hubs like airports and it’s common for them to have dedicated railway sidings for loading goods. It could be a nice way to resolve the transition between the aesthetic of the village and the airport and it’d be a chance to put in a goods freight station rather than a regular train station.

An important part for any log storage is sprinkler systems. It keeps the logs damp and protects and prepares them for cutting. And an inspector. Often mills are independent from the logging crews. So there is an independent third party that inspects the wood and says it worth. So it’s not bias to the mill or the logging company. I live in the US pacific NW. A lot of logging over here. So just some ideas for a bit of realism
