2003 Audi A4 1.9tdi 130bhp. Owned for 13 years. Bought at 40k miles now at 208k. Remapped at 90k to 160bhp. Still on original clutch. I refuse to sell this car. Costs me nothing every year to keep on the road nothing has ever gone wrong with it. Shame cars and diesels aren’t made like this anymore.

I've had a few cars with the 1.9 tdi and Calvin isnt wrong, they are good for the miles with maintenance. Great mpg and loads of power and torque. In my opinion the six speed manual (red D, red I in TDI ) 130 is a really good model.

I had one and the engine did 650.000 miles/a little over 1.000.000.000 KM. Then the hydraulic lifters and flywheel and clutch were so worn out i had to change it. So the engine had to be rebuilt. That cost too much so i ditched the car and bought another one with 216.000 KM. 3,5 years later it has 360.000 KM and it's doing great. Things were breaking all the time at this point (suspension arms, cv joints, sensors, thermostat, fuel injector o-rings mostly). But it was still extremely reliable.

I've had two of these cars and one of them I bought with no service history so i did a deal with the trader, first thing I did was to change the timing belt and water pump and changed the oil and filters and in the time I had it, I did 25k and sold it on, the second one I bought the engine was not an issue but it was the automatic version, And the gear box went wrong but the engine was rock solid.. If you want to buy one of these cars, i recommend buying one with a manual gear box and your good to go.

I was wondering what model engine code to go for. I want a 130 as I think they're the best compromise of power performance and reliability. I was thinking an AVF passat b5.5 or ASZ 130 in a Golf Mk4. I'm not sure about the b6 passat 1.9tdi. I also like the pd as I can change the fuel filter without Vagcom/vcds.

Currently have a b5.5 pd130 1.9TDI and I bought it at 250,000miles with the intention of it being a daily I could do some stupid mods to. Well everyone told me about the engines being so good and how reliable they are buy buyer beware especially to young buyers like myself - the suspension will need rebuilding according the higher the milage and parts in the EU anyways aren't cheap. I also previously owned a 1.4 250000 miles mk1 seat leon and it had absolutely no suspension or rust issues. Maybe it's a passat thing? Just make sure you check all of the arms and bushings and shocks and if at all possible drive it hard on your test drive over rough road to test the topmounts. I bought mine for 1900 euro and have already spend over 2k excluding tax test and young people's insurance. I will attest to the reliability of the engine though which is why I've bothered putting the money into it. When they're solid they're solid. Just a warning message.

I'd rather have a 2.2 Civic. £80 a injector rebuild, usually less if you have all 4 done at once. And only common issues are exhaust manifold split around 100K. White smoke is usually a stuck injector dumping diesel into the cylinder. Black smoke is usually from clogged diesel filters. All diesels smoke black slightly.
