Indeed, most diesels had plenty of hiccups when they first entered service, but that's the case with practically all new technologies when they first come out. Even the famed Alco PA, widely regarded as the most beautiful of all diesels, had a laundry list of problems with its Alco 244 prime mover. (Hence why the only operational PA in Mexico runs on modern power so far as I know)

The bit where Duck gives D199 a chewing out in the beginning is priceless, all of Duck's sharp rebuttal warming the cockles of my steam-buff's heart, and of all of it true. When a diesel conks out, it's done till the mechanics can get at it, but a steamer can and will go home on one cylinder if need be. And there's been plenty of times a steamer's bailed out a diesel or electric that has given up the ghost, most notably with the new A3 "Tornado", and UP 844 to name a few. Give me steam any day
@rmgilyard2 жыл бұрын
Well unlike steamers, diesel engines are much more economical and can be repaired in a record time wheras a steamer takes hours to get started. All a diesel needs to do is be loaded with oil, push the throttle and then we're off... Off to the see the Wizard of Oz!!! D199 or Bear could have snided this in retort, but hey it's true.
@rmgilyard2 жыл бұрын
Also they can be repaired so fast that whenever an engine is stalled such as a steamer, the diesel will always be called to take action. It might struggle a little, but it won't stop till it gets all the way home jsut like a steam engine will.

It's so nice learning about trains when reading these book stories. Makes railroading a whole lot more interesting and fascinating to dig much deeper into doing for an actual honest living. This story is one of the finests I've ever read. Mad earnest credit to the artistry of Gunvor Edwards and Peter Edwards for their remarkable chemistry of working the realistic, beautiful, impressionistic styles of universal illustrations for Wilbert Awdry's inspiration of railroading. I mean forreal, I am in love with the pretty pictures captivating what's being said in the text of every story since the Stepney book. Imagine what level of image perfectionism you would've seen if the Edwards continued to do their dynamic flair throughout Christopher Awdry's tenure of the series. I'm sorry but my opinion on Clive Spong's artistry is, without any denial, just plain lazy. No hate on him or anything but that guy couldn't compare the plethora of fantastic portraiture of fine-style art the way Peter and Gunvor put on simple paper or canvas. Those two are the definitive illustrators of the Railway Series; along with John T. Kenney as well for placeholding his style of work for them to continue on.

Still, not all diesels are clunkers, such as Bear and Boco, as well as the Deltics of the BR era. I may prefer steam over diesel power, but I do happen appreciate a classy old diesel when I see one, such as the Zephyr, the "Warbonnet" F7s of the Santa Fe, and the fabulous Alco PA Still, if you gave me a choice between an old tank engine and a top of the line diesel, I'd pick the tank engine, for steam's a lot more fun to drive and to be around, even if it is more work.

I had a weird train of thought (pun partially intended) where this story-and in fact, the entire book-could be (re-)adapted for the current TV series like how _Small Railway Engines_ was. In this scenario, the episode based on _Super Rescue_ would re-introduce BoCo as the "leader" of the Dieselworks because he's bigger and stronger than all the others. He would show the new diesels around Sodor. Aside from D199 and D7101, there would also be a third large diesel, the unnamed "Works Diesel" who appears some of Christopher Awdry's books. The _Super Rescue_ story actually starts when BoCo takes the visiting diesels back to the shed. The story then follows as normal otherwise, including Flying Scotsman's appearance because they have a model of him now. But instead of Henry pushing D7101, the "Works Diesel" takes the tired Henry and D7101 to the Steamworks and Dieselworks, respectively. Then it followed by an episode based on an alternate version of _Escape_ where a Sodor engine (instead of Donald or Douglas, this would be Henry) rescues some coaches and two steam engines from a scrapyard on the mainland. The coaches turn out to be Isabel, Dulcie, Alice, and Mirabel. The two steam engines turn out to be the characters from the cancelled RWS book _Barry the Rescue Engine_, that being Barry, a BR 2MT 2-6-0, and a Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST. The final episode to this story arc involves D7101, the "Works Diesel", the 2MT, and the Hunslet finally receiving their respective names (Bear, *TBA*, Barry, *TBA*) and settling in the railway. Bear takes over BoCo's mainline duties, allowing BoCo to focus more on Edward's branch line. The "Works Diesel" also covers mainline duties, but also helps keep the Dieselworks in order. Barry and the Hunslet will have their own adventures in another story arc. Oliver and Duck would recognize the four auto-coaches and take them onto their branch line. All in all, this trilogy would focus primarily on Henry (because who doesn't like a good story with our Number Three Green Black Five?), bring back BoCo, and introduce 9 "new" characters to the show (though Spamcan may not return). Bonus funny bit: The _Super Rescue_ episode has a short scene that shows Rebecca's reaction to the nickname "Spamcan" is the complete opposite of D199... Because she is one! And proud of it!

Funnily enough problems like this still go on with newer, and frankly more unreliable locomotives. The reasonably new Class 68 on Britain’s rail network has proven not to be too reliable, as I’ve heard about many failures with them. Last year, one of the 68s broke down, and had to be rescued by a Class 37, and those locos were built in the 1960s, and yet are still in service! Back in the good old days, steam locos had to rescue failed, modern diesels, and the tables haven’t really turned, as now, the old diesels are rescuing the modern mayhem!
