PLEASE USE HIGH VOLTAGE SAFETY at all times. Not knowing your safety can incur injury. Now, lets be honest. Every High Voltage scientist needs their power supply. You guys asked for it, so we're doing it! Today we'll show you an extremely simple build that outputs over 10,000 volts AC, from a non-rectified transformer, at a relatively safe current. These transformers, from ionic cleaners, are some of the few without internal diodes. Also - Cheers to Bogdan!

Honored you enjoy us! As per the x-rays, I have put thought into doing so in the future. Great suggestion. I have over 80lbs of lead (will be doing a plasma-lead-melting video soon) that I can use to shield from x-rays. The trick is how to do it in a controlled fashion. Very tricky. I have the 40kv, no problem. But the tube may be a little more tricky to attain.

I recently found an air ionizer at the thrift store, but upon disassembling, I found that there was a small box connected to the ionizing spikes. It says "input 120 vac 50-60 hertz, output 7kv dc negative." theoretically that would contain a transformer and diodes, but it could have some sort of electronic circuit. The whole air filter works anyway, so would it be worth trying to recover a transformer, or should I just use the whole thing like it's supposed to be used? and should I buy the transformer off amazon, or find/ try to make my own? sorry for a lot of questions, but I want to make sure I don't blow up my parent's basement...

Fluorescent ballasts tend to drive flybacks much harder than they are in a CRT TV, if that's where your's came from. A TV flyback is driven with a square wave at rectified mains voltage by the horizontal output transistor, but the deflection yoke causes the current through the flyback primary to ramp as a sawtooth waveform. The air gap between the two post halves of the ferrite core, inside the coils of the flyback, causes the flyback to store some energy like a capacitor during the primary current ramp up, no secondary current flows because of the built in rectifier diodes, and then it discharges that energy in the DC pulse created when the sawtooth ramp drops off. When driving a flyback with an electronic ballast the output V of the ballast is usually much higher than rectified mains. The electronic ballast uses a resonant LC circuit to drive higher voltages and current through a fluorescent lamp tube at a high frequency of around 25 KHz and voltages of between 300 and 600 volts. Most TV flybacks are resonant at around 15 KHz, it's not too far off from the flyback's resonant frequency to matter. The higher voltage and current of the ballast drives the flyback harder than the horizontal output transistor drive circuit in the TV. I have a large DC flyback that I had to put in a plastic jar with the inputs and outputs connected to terminals through the wall of the jar with sealer around them, and filled it with mineral oil because my 55 watt ballast was driving it so hard the pins on the bottom of the flyback were arcing like crazy, and the high voltage was arcing through the thick red insulation on the positive output wire. Once the oil stopped the wasteful, energy robbing pin arcing, and losses through the insulation, I got an impressive output that I use high quality auto ignition cables to carry the HV to a load. I can power a small Tesla Coil with it. It's output current is comperable to a low end neon sign transformer, probably 10 mA or more, but at the high frequency so it is less sensitive to RF from the TC primary, though I still use chokes and safety gaps to protect it.

Hi dom! It should work with 240 volt as well. However, only use the CFL inverters sold in your country, for specificly 240 volt input (from wall). Basically, the output will then be the same as what would happen here in the USA. On that note, greetings from Seattle, Washington!

Isn't air breakdown voltage more that 10kV/cm? AFAIK it ranges between 10 and 30 depending on electrode sharpness and, if that's a 1" gap, it should be at least 25kV, shouldn't it?
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 7 жыл бұрын
battlekruiser great question. Air's dielectric breakdown is 30kv/cm between two 1" brass spheres. This is the electrical standard at STP. However, when you have sharp points, the electric field gradients are much more intense and longer sparks are achieved with lower voltages. The two high voltage leads are very sharp. This transformer indeed outputs approximately 10,000 v. If I attached it to two rounded spheres, the spark length is approximately 4mm

I guess that generates lots of negative ions as well? If you don’t know about those, you should look into it... The benefits are amazing. They literally make you feel better. Generated in nature by lightning and waterfalls, they are the “fresh” in fresh air. They bond with smoke, dust, and pollen causing them to stick together and they just fall out of the air to the floor.

@FredtheDorfDorfman1985
@FredtheDorfDorfman1985 5 жыл бұрын
Yes negative ion generators tend to use flybacks that feed AC into Cockroft-Walton voltage multiplier cascades with negative output that is fed to a set of needles that discharge negative ion corona into the air and a fan blows air through that carries the ions out into the room. Ionic breeze machines like this one use plates charged with the negative high voltage, and electrode wires on the upwind side of the plates with the positive charge to electrically charge and move the air, like a high voltage lifter does, and air pollutants like pollen, mold spores, dust, dust mite feces, animal dander, etc cling to the plates and can be wiped off and discarded. They clean the air electrically and disperse negative ions to improve the air quality.

That is in fact a flyback transformer. Your on the right track. A lot of them will be very similar even if used in totally unrelated appliances. CRT TVs, air purifiers, plasma globes. A miniature one can be found in CFL bulbs, CFL back lights for computers, and on the smallest end arc lighters which are a recent development. The bigger ones can obviously handle more voltage and power in general so I'd stick with those. Also an old school ignition coil for a car is basically a massive flyback without the diode but I'd stick with the mid range ones that can be soldered on a board.

If you just plug the transformer into the wall, it will blow up immediately. Too much power being provided. The driver limits power and also switches the power on and off incredibly fast. That fast on-off-on is what drives the flyback.

I have the same flyback transformer , i got it from tv . But at the bottom there are almost 10-15 leads emerging out . Which lead i use for power input and which pin use for establish arc.

Ah, so that is a modern flyback which only outputs DC, as they have internal diodes. Those pins tend to be unique to each transformer. You have to experiment with placing your power wires on combinations of two... until you get a high voltage out of the big red high voltage wire.

would it be possible to put a dimmer/pot somewhere in the circuit to increase/decrease the voltage output. normally i would put the dimmer on the mains side of the circuit but im not sure if the ballasts would be able to be dimmed

@@PlasmaChannel i might have to experiment with this a bit if i ever get one of those high voltage generators, right now my setup just has 3 microwave transformers secondaries in series and primaries in series. being powered but 2 variacs on separate phases (using only the live wire on the outputs). neutrals are tide together with the grounds im still trying to find a meter to measure the voltage output

Hi Plasme sir! I have an question . Is there anybody whi will answer me? ❤ As understand it good, I can reduce 220V to less volt with a driver? For example, a carbon-wallheater rises or lower his heat by higher or lower voltage. Can I use this driver for it? Thanks for answering me.

If I understand your question, heaters, and electric ranges/ovens with resistive tungsten nickel heating elements use rheostats to control their heating elements which are high wattage variable resistors, similar to potentiometers, that have a circular strip of resistive material that a sliding "wiper" contact slides across as you turn the knob. One end of the resistive strip is connected to the AC mains power supply and the wiper is off of that end when in the off position. As you turn it on the wiper contacts the strip at the supply which is high, then as you continue to turn it the distance of resistive strip material between the wiper contact and the supply gets greater which reduces the current flow through increasing resistance which varies the temperature through medium high, medium, medium low, and low. Unless it is a rheostat that starts at low in which the wiper contact is off of the other end when off, then starts at low and goes higher as it is turned until it reaches the supply contact point at high. The voltage to the heating element doesn't really go down a lot because the method of heat control is current control. The less current through the resistive heating element, the less energy from the current is transformed into heat. The fluorescent ballast here does not supply the current needed to power a heating element. In the US, heating elements like in heaters use high current from 2-15 amps at 120 volts, and heating elements on ranges and in ovens, laundry dryers, and electric water heaters usually use the higher wattage 240 volts because it is more efficient and can supply up to 30 amps at a couple of thousand watts. The output of a fluorescent ballast is not variable, except for units designed for dimming, but none of them really put out enough current to power a heating element. And a flyback transformer, like this one, driven by a fluorescent ballast only puts out a few milliamps, not the many amps and watts a heating element needs. So to sumerize, the name of the game with heating element control is current control. Hope this helps.

TWO QUESTIONS: 1) Are these transformers pure AC output..or may they have some internal diodes?? 2) Can they be connected in series for higher output? THANKS AGAIN!!!

Does every different transformer have different operating frequency?
@FredtheDorfDorfman1985
@FredtheDorfDorfman1985 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. A transformer's frequency depends on the inductance and capacitance of its coils and windings, and the dimensions and magnetic characteristics of its core material, if it has a core. Mains frequency transformers (50-60 Hz,) tend to have laminated electrical steel cores with layered steel alloy designed to reduce eddy currents and heating, and high frequency switch mode transformers like flybacks tend to have ferrite ceramic cores with frequencies of thousands or even millions of hertz. CRT flybacks tend to have resonant frequencies of around 15 KHz for large color TV's, and 30-150 KHz for computer monitors. The resonant frequency is the frequency a transformer is most efficient at because its inductive and capacitive reactances are equal in magnitude and cancel each other out, so as much of the energy going into the transformer comes out transformed to a higher/lower voltage instead of any of the energy being stored in the transformer's inductive or capacitive fields and getting wasted as heat. It's just like a radio antenna, it needs to be fed RF at its resonant frequency and have the correct dimensions and characteristics for the frequency you are using so its inductive and capacitive reactances are equal and cancel each other out so as much of the RF energy you are putting into the antenna comes out radiated into the far field, and none of it stored in the antenna's inductive or capacitive fields which would otherwise be inefficient, wasteful, and cause standing waves being reflected back to the transmitter causing heating and wear in the transmitter's components.

How dangerous is that high frequency arc? Is it possible to get a lethal shock from it if someone touchs it?
@FredtheDorfDorfman1985
@FredtheDorfDorfman1985 5 жыл бұрын
Not really. Flybacks put out low current at high frequency, so it would be like a Tazer. It will be painful and uncomfortable, unless you like pain 😏, but doubtful it would be lethal because flybacks usually don't put out more than 5-10 mA. Now I wouldn't want to get shocked by one driven by the Mazilli ZVS driver, or get shocked by the charged DAG capacitor of a CRT, or any other capacitors when charged by a DC flyback which if they have a high enough capacitance, can hold enough charge to be lethal if it crosses the heart. Unlike the high frequency of the flyback, a capacitor gives you the full charge in one pop. Capacitors are what deliver the charge in defibrilators. Now neon sign transformers over 10 mA, though current limited, can be lethal because of the mains frequency. Also microwave oven transformers are without a doubt lethal as hell! They are not current limited and can deliver amps at mains frequency and hundreds or thousands of watts.

Mike Lamb probably the output voltage would drop as the current is limited. Imagine that the input is 100V 20A and the output is 10000V: the maximum current would be 0,2A (10000*0,2=100*20).
