I’ve been playing for 35 years, and this is the first theory lesson I’ve understood since Mel Bay Book 1. Playing the G D Em C with a variety of Root, first inversion, and second inversion is a quite satisfying. And the idea of practicing within this as a limitation makes it an exercise in mindfulness. I also discovered about 3 fragments of Phish songs hiding in there. I can see immediately that they’re all there somewhere. Thank you.

As a self taught guitar player, I noticed after years that there is steps I skipped, and I still just focused to play better at what I know and enjoy what I do. But then I hit a "wall". I did not know what I was supposed to learn next, and even worse, I did not know what to ask or look for. This lesson helped a lot! My next step is to memorize the second string notes, not by doing the "octave" shortcuts, literally learn it by heart, and then practice to get comfortable with the triads and each chords' inversions and locations. To minor any chord, just flat the third, and to diminish any chord, just flat the fifth. Thank you!

I learned guitar by ear when I was younger, and it unfortunately hurt me as a musician. I never had a teacher to show me what I didn't know, so I was satisfied to play any song I heard and create by feel. I eventually realized that I was very limited, because I had no real understanding of how things fit together. Tomo, your lessons (here and in Guitar Wisdom) is the one of best things that has happened to me in my musical journey. I've been playing the instrument for 15 years, and I was always frustrated about simply picking up tabs and not knowing what's going on musically (for eg, oh they switch from the fourth chord to a fifth). Trusting the process and just consistently practicing (even if its just 15 minutes everyday) has helped tremendously! I can SEE MORE now! You've lessons have literally changed my life. Onwards and upwards!

This is exactly what I am wanting to learn on the guitar. I can play pretty much any chord on the piano, and I understand inversions very well. I know how to make a chord minor vs major. But the guitar, is like the freaking human genome! So, I am focusing on learning the fret board, and then I predict that I will FLY! Triads will be next. Can't wait. I completely agree that chord shapes are not as good as actually knowing the notes! Focusing on chord shapes is what brought me to my knees in the past. I would hit a road block because I couldn't play a certain shape and I didn't know where else on the fretboard that chord might live. Or how to add a 7th, or make it minor. SO EXCITED! I feel like i might finally learn to actually play the guitar!

for anyone coming to this at a later date... What helps is to actually look for a diagram of all notes on the guitar and rewrite it yourself using only i.e. notes from C major. There are only four root positions on the first 12 frets and then they repeat. Once you get comfortable and can pick them without thinking move to all first inversions. again, only 4 positions then move to second inversions. I found that easier than doing all inversions on the low strings and then moving up by a string. you actually do focus on only one thing - a triad in a root position (then first inversion, then second). Another thing that is important and will help you to learn the fretboard: When doing the root position, and you are comfortable, start thinking about where is your root. That way you'll memorise the "C" note. As you move to the first inversion, do the same for the "E" note and eventually "G" as you get to the second inversion. Then move to D, E, F, G, A, B chords... bonus tip: might sound strange, but before you sleep, imagine yourself doing your triad and think about what note is where. It helps consolidate what you were learning through the day. Do it each day for about five-ten minutes and stick to it until you can do it without thinking. Guitar is much as driving. First you need a lot of conscious effort, but then it becomes second nature and you're shifting through gears and gliding through curves without a thought.

We are lucky to be living in a time where there are so many resources to learn guitar, but the amount of information can also be overwhelming. Tomo i just want to thank you for how much effort you put into helping people to understand what they are playing and not just helping people to play something well, i have learned more in around 2 years of watching you than i ever learned from anything or anyone else online or in person for that matter. i feel that my understanding of music that i have gained from you has really opened up a lot of the guitar and made me comfortable with trying to understand new concepts like triads that i would have never understood without you, thank you Tomo ❤

I've been watching your videos intermittently for a while. I'm finally getting back to a solid routine and realised why my progression has been slow; it's because I'm trying to learn it all as fast as possible. I need to focus on these smaller chunks, and this lesson, Mr Fujita, has been a treasure and extremely enlightening! I'm now adding bottom three strings triads exercises into my new daily practice routine. Thank you for all you do! Your playing, teachings, and general philosophy within musicianship and life in general is unparalleled!

That was really interesting. I like the way you advise players not to feel pressure to be an expert and learn everything at once. Instead players should cherish every note. I will certainly be practising my triads. But only on the top 3 strings.

I love watching your videos and always learn a lot While watching this and playing the triads (I already knew how to play them but never understood the notes), I wrote down every position like this: D triad notes: A-D-F# Root position Root - M3rd - 5th D - F# - A do - mi - so 1st inversion M3rd - 5th - Root F# - A - D mi - so - do and did the same for the 2nd inversion and noticed how just moves forward! So easy and simple. I usually don't write down stuff, but this definitely made things click and put 2 and 2 together for me. Thanks :) it's great to learn from you Mr. Fujita, you're so passionate and since you're not completely explaining it you make me do the work and find out what's going on for myself haha!

A few take home points for me were: 1. Root position is root, major 3rd, 5th 2. First inversion is major 3rd, 5th, root 3. Second inversion is 5th, root, major 3rd. I also understood for example, the root position for the Cmaj chord is essentially part of the third fret C barre chord. Or the 1st inversion is part of the F-shaped C chord I play on the 8th fret. Also, I have recently been learning to play Dosed by RHCP and after this lesson I have a whole new appreciation of the Em and Dmaj triads John Frusciante is playing on the record. Thanks so much, Tomo!

@@davidkrause6990 Good job! Guitar is easy to learn visually but it's so important to learn much slower as other instruments... This way you understand each inversions with music theory. Thanks you! Hello Mr. Tomo! I completely understand the triads! I know them very fluently now. However, once we learn it, then what? How do we incorporate it into our playing? @@TomoFujitaMusic I am looking forward to such a lesson! I feel exactly the same like Wesley Du. Understanding theory is rather easy for me, not confusing at all. It's maths/logic, But when I learn this lesson, I can play triads in root position, 1st and 2nd inversion. When I play, is this really how to approach it? "Ok now I will play A triad second inversion. Next D triad root position etc." (key of A). What does sound valuable to me (pun intended) is to sing the notes you play. Being able to sing what you hear in your mind (assuming there is something you here) is the ultimate goal to me. But then it does not matter if the fifth is on top or 3rd, I play a *melody* (that happens to have theory behind, but it's not theory -> melody). Does that make sense? That's what is really confusing to me, not how you call theory elements. In any case I am really enjoying your lessons & I have the two Accelerate... DVDs at home. It is amazing how much you give to the community. Thanks!
