Now that the engine and transmission is mounted in place, the next step is to create mounts for the split wishbones. We could not do this earlier in the project because you need the weight of the engine to set caster. First Matt and Steve work on setting the caster between 6 & 8 degrees back. Once they find the sweet spot Matt works on creating a simple plate bracket that he can ream for the correct taper of the tie rod end. After some plasma cutting and welding the front end of the Roadster Pickup is locked in!! One step closer to taking it for a spin!!

Thank you SO MUCH for sharing the information at 0:33 about the bolt-on wishbone adapter for those of us who want to use the original, uncut wishbone. I'm building a 1931 Model A Roadster that I picked up in Idaho last year. I'm just about to do the engine swap from the original engine to a '52 flathead. I thought that I had to cut the wishbone, but since I'm keeping everything original, going for the highboy look, I'd like to keep the original wishbone intact. Now I know that it is possible with this adapter. THANK YOU!!

Long time lover of your channel, and I wanted to share this. The stories and the experiences you share will be here for years to come. Not only are you creating amazing content, but you're providing specific documentation of the vehicles you attend to. In your case, someone may purchase one of your cars in 50 years. They can come back and watch you go through the process of designing and fitting parts. Then, listen to you explain how and why you built it like you did. While I'm not a mechanic, your channel is one which I truly enjoy watching. You've inspired me in way's you can not imagine. Never forget the part that you play and how important your work is Mike, Matt and the whole ITG Family!

@@pinwizz69 Yep, it's his self chosen journey in life and countless people now and 50 years from now will benefit from his current and future knowledge he documents and shares. This is the good stuff and not a bunch of half brained, F-bomb dropping "professional builders" who "think" they know it all that Matt has admitted countless times that he doesn't know it all and learns right along with his loyal followers. This is the good stuff.

One of the few things, that really stuck with me from my vehicle dynamics classes, is that the selfaligning angle of a castor is 6 degrees - never less than that (remember to account for your load! An overloaded shop truck will alter that, if it's set at an empty bed!), and the more castor angle, the bigger your arms will get - especially in old Fords like these and mine! :-D

The top of the axle leaning back is positive caster. I run 10 degrees of positive caster and no toe. Car is stable at speed and handles well.

Consider that there will be a increase in caster when the added weight of interior, driver, passenger and bed load are added. So a caster measurement on the lower side of the range is better.

Good morning Matt and Steve. Matt, next time you need to shim something like that try using plastic cabinet wedge shims betweentheone wood shim andthefrome to fine tune the castor. I use them to level 3 piece pool table slates on 9 foot pool tables. In my case I snap off the excess shim once the slates are level to each other abd the base frame of the pool table. In your case just leave them as made. They come in a package of 8 I think and they're cheap. Don't use the wood ones. They won't last long doing what you'll be using them for. In my case I loved it when they came out with plastic ones as the wood version would compact over time from the weight of the slates abd throw off the level which you can't adjust on 3 piece slate pool tables. The truck is gonna be awesome when you guys get it finished. Can't wait to hear whet you name it.

You can measure the diameter of the tie rod and of the reamer and then use masking tape as a marker on the reamer. Saves a bit of time.

I did this on my A, I used the A wishbone but I put the plates (speedway) inside the frame which was boxed. A pie cut 5in from the perch mount brought the radius arn up and the weld was right behind the tyre. There is no way the wishbone arm could touch where it intersects withe the chassis and if it ever did you would have a lot more to worry about. Also I put 11degs of castor in the axle with 15in wires radial tyres and an F100 (49) steering box. I made a 4in pitman arm. The steering is light at low speed and at 60mph you can feel the 11deg start to come in making a very stable at high speed (up to 95mph) That's where I lost my nerve, I think there was a bit more but.

Have you given any consideration to using electrolysis for rust removal on parts? All you would need is a large tub of water with washing soda, and a battery charger. It works so you can do other things. Bead blasting for example requires someone working all the time. Good luck.

Question, since you're working with the wish-bone why not make it adjustable in the front like a 4 link? Then one can fine tune the handling.
@IronTrapGarage

We don’t use four link. It isn’t a modern street rod. Just our preferences

@@IronTrapGarage Didn't I see in one of your videos you made a nice wishbone? I think (just my thoughts)why not build one like that with a turn-buckle type adjustment on the fork end would look old but still have modern adjustment? Food for thought. The way you did it is ok . My OCD thinks there has to be a compromise.

surprised to see you using your plasma head as a hammer. just goes to show that everyone knows that everything is a hammer when you need one. though with the cost of consumables, i might wanna have something made of steel a little closer to hand. with my luck, i'd give it the old tap, tap, tapperoo, and snap off the ceramic cutting electrode. whaa, whaa, whaaaaa. (cue the price is right fail sounds)

You would ever have roadster shop build you a chassis?🤔
@joealbert7773
@joealbert7773 2 жыл бұрын
When you were talking about the caster setup, you called the rearward tilt of the kingpin negative caster. Backwards tilt is positive caster. The first sprint car I had had a Hallibrand 6:1 steering gear and we ran 5 or 6 degrees positive caster. The second car had a Lee 8:1 power steering gear. We ran around 12 degrees positive caster. At low speeds the front end would sometimes exhibit a caster shimmy due to low power steering gear pump output. It never happened at race speeds.
