At the time, I used EWQL silver for all the strings and brass, and mostly Image-Line synths for the electronic parts. The guitar is a sample run through Guitar Rig 2. Now I use EWQL platinum, a lot of Massive/Omnisphere, and a handful of other plugins (Stylus RMX, Guitar Rig 5, etc)

EWQL silver, though dated, is only $145 right now, and you can find a bunch of free VST synths online if you do some googling. If you're just starting out, you probably don't need to buy expensive samples yet. Get a feel for your DAW first. :)
