I only ever had about 8 SNES games but they had to include this trilogy. I loved them so much I never EVER thought of them as hard. I was just immersed until the end. The vehicle levels felt entirely like a reward for making it through the side scrollers, which was why ROTJ was a disappointment: it was the only one whose flying levels were vastly inferior than it's predecessors. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Heck yeah, it's so good to see someone give these the props they're do instead of just whining about the difficulty. The games WERE hard as nuts, don't get me wrong, and I DID cheat to fully clear them initially as a kid, but man... the visuals, the audio, the way they actually worked exclusively with stuff that's technically directly FROM the movies (even if stretched) for all the content, the amazing uses of mode 7, all the playable characters... it was just larger than life as a little kid and still some of my favorite Star Wars video game insomuch as capturing the essence of the original trilogy, if overly bombastically, but that's just what I wanted at the time and still hits a good spot to this day.

I didn't play any of these until I got a copy of _Super Empire Strikes Back_ for Christmas REAL LATE. Like, after the N64 came out (I think I had my Dreamcast too). I think it was just like, my parents figuring that I was into Star Wars, and the local K-B Toys was shutting down so might as well nab a bunch of stuff while it was cheap. So I got, like, _Rogue Squadron_ and _Jedi Power Battles_ too (thank God) that Christmas. But I did keep coming back to try SESB - it just looked awesome so I wanted to play it. And I remembered Nintendo Power previews talking about LJN's hard work with the titles, doing things like referencing frames from the movie to create the lightsaber fight animations, and using unused concept art to create enemies and expand the story with locations the gang never visited in the film (LJN generally may have sucked balls, but damn did they put a lot of effort into the _Super Star Wars_ games, and it shows!). But yeah; holy shit is that game not fun. I remember being just so baffled at the "wind currents" in the early Hoth Stages - the thought had occurred to me that maybe that was what those were, but I was convinced they were in actuality just some shitty "random Force jump" things because there's no visual feedback as to what they are. There's no wind lines to show off currents, for example, and they're SO HARD to hit consistently. Even when you know they're there, you have to jump and double-jump constantly to try and get 'em to trigger. It was crazy, so I figured it was their dumb attempt to show how Force-sensitive - but unrefined - Luke has become and then he'll get his powers under control when you get to Dagobah. Made sense to me, haha! I also remember just how tense it would be whenever I was making progress because I knew it wouldn't last - something would come by and kick my ass and all that hard work would be for naught, lol. The farthest I ever got was the one stage in Cloud City where Han Solo is rescuing Chewie or C3PO or something (maybe I picked Han Solo because he was available and he's way cooler than Chewbacca) and inexplicably you face a giant probe droid as a boss. Thing destroyed me instantly, and I haven't picked it up since :P I _did_ eventually play the GAME BOY version of _Super Return of the Jedi_ though, and that game's difficulty was nowhere NEAR as insane as the SNES versions (despite it _being a port;_ like, they're trying to translate/remix the 16-bit game for the Game Boy, complete with downscaled assets from the SNES version. It's not an entirely original game. Even the behind-the-back speeder bike chase level made it in instead of trying for something more GB-friendly, like an isometric stage or something), so I *did* complete _that..._ but it just felt so hollow, y'know? lol Despite all that, I still love the presentation of these titles (AND Factor 5's similar _Indiana Jones: Greatest Adventures_ for SNES). They have such good art and presentation for the hardware, and the ambitious mix of gameplay felt like perfect precursors to what _Shadows of the Empire_ would do in the N64 launch window, which is a crazy level of ambition for an SNES game. I can't think of too many other SNES that combined sidescrolling levels with Mode 7 stages and sprite scaling stages and just whatever they thought they could do that would capture a scene in the movie well. I wish Disney/LucasArts would contract a modern studio to make some new Super Star Wars games. Someone like Wayforward (Shantae, Mighty Switch Force, Contra 4) could freakin' make AMAZING faux-retro modern Super Star Wars games in this style for _The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi_ and _Rise of the Skywalker_ - AND they would make ones that wouldn't be ludicrously difficult too! That would be nice (^-^)

These have been my all-time favorite video-games for a reason. The addiction towards beating this trilogy was obviously apparent. (Back as a kid.) Yes beating "Super Empire Strikes Back" REQUIRES Game-Genie. "Super Return of The Jedi" was BY-FAR the easiest. All you needed to do is pick the strongest character according to the weapon-of-choice. For example, to "Escape the Sail-Barge" pick Han-Solo to obliterate the slimy worm-lord. All you got to do is blast him with the said blaster.

I love this trilogy of games. The only thing I disagree with is the last mission of Return of the Jedi. I think it pushed the SNES and was a got closing moment. I can pound through Super Star Wars and Return with few deaths. Empire to me feels hard as hell on Hoth, medium on Dagonah, and easyish on Bespin. The Vader fight takes a lot of focus, and takes a long time. I would say Super Star Wars 8/10, Empire 9.5/10, Jedi 8.5 or 9/10. Lofty scores for the SNES. Jumping control is a bit stretched on the first one, but fixed on the other 2. My big issue with Super Star Wars is probably when you die late in a level. You have to resume with just the laser and the Mutant Wamp Rat and Jawenko are insanely difficult without at least the 2nd or 3rd power up on the pistol.

I think the person who did the music for batman returns would've done the music better

After the first Star Wars, I knew JVC had gone super cheap on the insane difficulty, so Game Genie to the rescue! Without Game Genie, it's not fun at all. With Game Genie, they're all good fun.

I played all three back in the day, hard as all fks! I used a Game Genie....not my proudest moments lol

There's no shame lol.... it was worth doing just to get to the "good levels" like the Death Star levels in the first one.

The way I see it, if a majority of people have to use cheat codes to enjoy a game, then the developer has failed. I hold the unpopular opinion that this trilogy is a bit shit. Constantly re-spawning enemies, bullshit platforming tropes, poor jumping mechanics. The presentation is great, but presentation doesn't make a game, gameplay does. And I think the gameplay in the Super Star Wars trilogy is broken.

I would have to agree with you it's like they set out to make sure that the game was impossibly hard, so people wouldn't complain that it was too easy and return it or something

I'm not gonna lie...When I first got the game I was disappointed when I beat it and never saw the trash compactor level that I had seen a picture of in an issue of EGM right before the game was released . So I though maybe it was because I beat it on easy...I changed the difficulty to Brave and beat it again. Still no Trash Compactor level! So I played it on Jedi and tried and tried and tried until finally I beat the game, and guess what?!? Still no Trash Compactor level! I looked up codes and found nothing. I looked up Game Genie codes and still nothin'...Years later I finally found evidence of the existence of the Trash Compactor level that apparently was removed from the game before it was completed. I don't know why, but when I first saw the picture in the magazine that was the one level that really stuck out and I couldn't wait to play it. I would've rather had that level than the whole Sandcrawler exterior/interior thing.

Whoa... I had no idea there was a missing level. Thanks for sharing! I wonder why it got cut? That would have been way better than the stupid sandcrawler level.

@@FridayNightArcade This is the reason as per Wikipedia: "There was a trash compactor level that was deleted from the game due to lack of cartridge space.[7] An image was published in an issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly around the time of the game's release."
