It was a really cool system at the time. Got mine as a Christmas present when they still sold at the original MSRP and have that original system still working underneath my TV today. :) Star Control II (my late stepfather’s favorite game of all time), Need For Speed and several other games offered things in the 3DO versions that weren’t available on other platforms. I got so much mileage out of it that I didn’t move to a newer system until Christmas 1997 (PS1). Lots of great gaming memories from those years.

This was ones of the games I rented with a 3DO back in days. While most aspects of it were very impressive, I found the lack of parallax scrolling to be inexplicable and inexcusable. I mean, here's a $700 console in 1994 and it can't do something that's a staple of 16-bit gaming and my Genesis (and SNES) can do with ease!

Interesting to see people talking about the price. I think a lot of people forget that the video game systems from Nintendo and Sega (and later Sony) had manufacturing controlled by the company and were sold at a loss with that offset by higher royalties on the games. By contrast, 3DO itself didn’t manufacture the hardware, rather that was licensed to manufacturers to make various models (Panasonic, Goldstar, Creative Labs, etc.) and were originally not intended to sell at that sort of a loss - and the licensing fees were much lower, In other words, it’s not that the 3DO was price-gouging, it’s that market price expectations were artificially low due to years of being accustomed to systems selling at a big loss and the unsustainably of that in a model with lower royalties.

@Sega Lord X Great video as usual! I just wanted to make one small distinction since as a game music composer/arranger myself I want to make sure the new music got full credit. :) Most of the soundtrack comes from the FM Towns version but there are a few tracks that are different between the two. Going from memory, the FM Towns version had a different intro song (the SSFII one) and no Akuma theme, so both of those arrangements first appeared on the 3DO. I’m not sure if there were any other differences but I love that intro music as much as you do, so I wanted to highlight that the arrangement appeared on 3DO first. :)

I love that you give the 3do a fair shake, but to people who didn't play it (myself included), I think the problems were as much related to issues like the daisy chain controllers that apparently weren't good, and obviously the price - which is the main reason no-one played it. @@Not-Great-at-Gaming The biggest problem with the 3DO is you really have to look at it historically. You have to see where it fits in that little niche between the 16-bit era and the early 32-bit era. The problem was after the Saturn and definitely after the PlayStation were launched it faded so fast into obscurity it wasn't even funny. I owned one after I owned a PlayStation and going back was incredibly painful. It's remarkable how archaic it felt just a few years after the PlayStation launched. I'm pretty sure I still have it sitting in my garage somewhere yet it might have been one of the few consoles I actually gave away because of the time I just couldn't find any games for it and just didn't care.

@@lazarushernandez5827 The 3DO and Neo-Geo were no doubt good systems, the killing blow for both, was the insanely huge price tags they cost at the time. Plus since parents were the ones paying for it, they're more likely to get something cheaper for their kid. Wanted a 3DO as a kid. When it came out it was $700 and it seemed like myth to many kids on the playground arouns 93-94. I did play the store demo’s whenever I had a chance. They were always in small chain appliance stores as we did not have best buy’s around then in CT. It was good memories for sure. Never did own one. In 95 for christmas we got a Saturn and were in love with it!

this and the dos version were legendary, mainly for the soundtrack, good stuff really . p.s: any time SLX sneaks in some RYGAR footage or music, it shows what a huge fan of good games he really is. p.p.s: guile's music is still the best and this version is awesome, but i have to admit, they ken's stage music's new remix kinda sucks next to the otiginal.

The og fz1 3DO is one of the best looking consoles of all time. Aesthetically seeing it running this game on import and being about a grand is nostalgia. The blinking led access lights, like model one mega cd, just by themselves are nostalgic and for the time seemed so cool. Imagining having this new super console that could and indeed was running arcade perfect ports. The future was here and, it was 700 dollars 😛 road rash...gex...I loved it. Wolfenstein on it was port of the mac version and included all the extra maps. Return fire on it was/is also absolutely sublime. A cool and quirky machine.

One thing I appreciate about your channel is how you talk about a system and it’s games in the context of the time. I went from an NES to a 3DO as a kid after it was discounted to bargain prices. It wasn’t until the very late 90s I was able to afford another system. I had plenty of games to play, Many of which blew me away with their graphics. People often spend too much time talking about the bad games on the system or how it’s better on this other system and forget about games like SF2 which were simply amazing when it was released.

When I first played this version a decade ago it struck me as arcade perfect and it still impresses me even if it isn't. It makes the Snes and especially Megadrive ports of SSF2 look passable at best.

IT was a piece of shit dude. The controller was terrible and the game selection was bad too. I didn't ask for it I don't know why my parents bought it for me, I'm certain the guy at he video game store (were no chains back then) suckered them into buying it to move his stock.

That was an unnecessarily harsh way of putting it. It's like Sega Lord X puts it - the 3DO was the best of the failed consoles. Funnily enough my parents talked me out of getting one (along with the Atari Jaguar, thank f... Haha) they said, "you know you're going to want that new Sega when it comes out and you can't have both". Really liking this channel lately, it's become my first choice for video game nostalgia.

SSF2Turbo had the best music of the whole series. I would play this religiously at the local arcade which had a large-screen sit-down version with surround speakers. Man it was awesome.
@CleetusVanDamme5303 жыл бұрын
That delay when the music picks up is very noticeable. Looks and sounds great otherwise.
@perlichtman15623 жыл бұрын
Definitely noticeable and probably jarring to a modern listener - but I can tell you that at the time, playing it as a pre-teen, the sliver of silence felt like everything fell away and the adrenaline surged as I braced myself for “the real battle” to begin. Sort of like the way that many action movies of earlier eras would drop out all sound to emphasize a dramatic line or moment before bringing the music back in more powerful than before.
