Our Newfie wasn't trained to rescue. On vacation we were swimming and suddenly my Newfie Nana clamped down on my wrist and wouldn't let go until she had pulled me to shore. Now we need to have her water retrieval toy with us when we swim or she tries to rescue everyone she sees swimming. No training, just Newfie instinct.

Once one joins your family you never want to be without. Just make sure you can take care of them. Definitely one to get from a breeder. They’re worth the effort though :)

We had a newfie years ago. "Cosmo" wasn't trained in the water but we did a test. I wish we would have filmed it. Cosmo was a year old and my teenage son acted like he needed help in the water. Cosmo took off from the beach jumped in the water swam to my son grabbed a hold of my sons tshirt by the back of his neck with his mouth and swam back to shore with my son! It was incredible! These dogs are incredible dogs!! They are so sweet, loving and Friendly. So cute to!! They are very strong, have webbed feet and a waterproof coat. Definitely life saving dogs in more ways than one. The one girl said they are gentle giants. Thats what I used to tell people when they wanted to pet Cosmo. I called him my gentle giant!! Absolutely incredible dogs!! ❤️

That, and saving drowning men, was what these dogs were bred to do. Fishing was one of the few ways of life in Newfoundland since it was discovered by Europeans (after the Vikings I mean) but the weather and very rough waters around Newfoundland was unpredictable at best and that meant lots of men overboard and damaged boats that needed to be brought ashore for repair. These dogs became the embodiment of the strength and determination of the people of Newfoundland to make a life there. It’s not the easiest place to live. I know, I was born and raised there. I moved away when I was 25 and still miss it everyday now that I’ve moved to another province. What you see in these amazing dogs is exactly what you see in the spirit of the people that call Newfoundland home. I hope to do that very soon myself, along with getting a couple Newfoundland dogs to enjoy the life there even more so. :)

If you think about it taking a dog for a swim is in many ways similar to taking a dog for a walk. Key thing is they need activity in the form of play or work, and here they can get both. While obviously bigger species can save drowning people efficiently, I've seen folks just play in the water with smaller dogs. Actually on that topic: dog owners, does a puppy instinctively know how to swim? how soon is it safe to take it there?
@whiskey67192 жыл бұрын
Most of the time they figure out how to swim by themselves. From the dogs I have had the 8 month old Newfie I have now is the best swimmer and he’s only swam twice. I’ve had two Great Danes, a Belgian Malinois and a Chocolate Lab and now this Newfoundland. The lab was a good swimmer but the others were decent not the best. It probably depends on the breed. If you take the puppy early they will probably be a better swimmer

My sister was jogging near a river with her newfie, Sophie, and noticed that a large raft made of logs had come loose from its mooring and had started floating down the river. Being a strong swimmer, she told Sophie to stay on the shore and she jumped in and swam out to the raft to pull it in. After struggling for awhile, she called for Sophie and the dog swam out and pulled my sister AND the raft to shore!

we had 2 newfs growing up...not at the same time but one after another....each lived to ~12 which is not bad for a newf.....they loved the snow....the lord byron poem comes to mind... Near this Spot are deposited the Remains of one who possessed Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferosity, and all the virtues of Man without his Vices. This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery if inscribed over human Ashes, is but a just tribute to the Memory of Boatswain, a Dog who was born in Newfoundland May 1803 and died at Newstead November 18th 1808.[4]

@thomaslawlor4200 Жыл бұрын
Actually, a Newfoundland Labrador cross is a bit of a unicorn. The Newfoundland was here when Europeans pitched here 530 odd years ago, They are what they are. Nobody knows where they came from. They are suburb water dogs. Problem was, at often 160lbs + dragging a wet one over the side of a small boat was a challenge, It was decided a smaller version of The Newfoundland was needed. Local fishermen bred Newfoundland's with a now extinct breed known as The St. John's Water Dog. The result was what was called The Lessor Newfoundland. That name worked for a hundred years. Then, a British Navel officer noticed teh attributes on the Lessor and thought the breed would be popular back home. Well he was right and the Labrador Retriever was

I’m from the island of Newfoundland, where this breed comes from. I just wanted to let everyone in on a secret.....that is.....the CORRECT way to say “Newfoundland”! Lol. It is NOT New-FOUND-lind, or NEW-fin-lin, it is pronounced “new-fin-LAND, emphasis on the “land” part. Any other pronunciation is incorrect. So, if you love Newfoundland dogs, pronounce their breed in the most authentic way. They’ll love you for it and a bunch of super-friendly people living on a rock in the North Atlantic will love you for it too :)

@thomaslawlor4200 Жыл бұрын
A Newfoundland can swim a very long distance indeed. They not only have four webbed paws, but also a massive lung capacity. Swimming through rough surf shows their power. Our late four year old, 174lb male would easily, easily, pull a 14 foot boat with four passengers on it. If I stood knee deep in water he was able to pull me off my feet. Incredible.
