I think Goku's "I was saving it for when I really needed it" was because of the whole Buu thing that was kind of happening at the same time, not because he didn't think he didn't need it for Vegeta. Remember, when he was first going Super Saiyan 3, King Kai was pleading with him not to do it because it would take up the remaining time he had on earth... which it kind of did. Now imagine if he'd done that right when Vegeta tried to fight him. It was actually Goku thinking, one of those things people think he does rarely.

God I loved the entire Vegito stuff in the anime. From Vegeta's development ("I fight to be number one" to "fuq it, let's fuse to save our families) was such a huge step. Him being hurt and bothered so much by Goku holding back is also relatable for every little brother out there. And of course Goku messes it up by poor wording. "I couldn't go SSJ3 because that would cut down the time I can be here and our time to fight both" would've been much more diplomatic, but I guess Goku isn't known for his empathy. Also Vegito's absolutely condescending behaviour towards the supposedly strongest being in the universe was great to watch.
