In the fifth instalment Super Women co-founders (presenter, broadcaster and DJ) Georgie Rogers and (director and filmmaker) Alice Smith chat over Zoom to documentary filmmaker Li-Da Kruger. She is an independent filmmaker also with a background for some years in TV.
Li-Da’s films include the story of going back to Cambodia with her adoptive mum Prue Leith, who you may well know from popular television programme The Great British Bake Off. In ‘Prue Leith: Journey With My Daughter’ (Channel 4, 2020) they went in search of Li-Da's biological parents. It is a different take on the feature documentary ‘Belonging’ (ITV, History), shortlisted for a Grierson Award in 2003, which she also authored and produced. Her award-winning short, ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’ (2013), is still used in nationwide anti-sex trafficking campaigns. For the past 6 years Li-Da has been an independent filmmaker but has a solid background in specialist factual TV programming since 1999.
Broadcast directing credits include: - 2x60 ‘1960s: The Beatles Decade’ (UKTV), 3x3 ‘My VE Day’ (Channel 4's 3MW). From high-end specialist factual series to one-offs, producing credits include ‘Egypt Unwrapped’ (NatGeo/Five/Fremantle Media), ‘Lost Pyramid’ (History/Channel 4), ‘Ancient Discoveries’ (History), Egypt’s Ancient Discoveries’ (Discovery), ‘1945: The Year That Changed The World’ (UKTV), ‘Animal Mummies’ (Animal Planet/ZDF) and ‘Air Crash Confidential’ (Discovery), 'Survivors' (BBC 4). Corporate clients include LOCOG, Viking River Cruises and non-profits LB Camden TME, Only Connect, NKFC, Japan RSA, Legatum whose individual causes she is passionate about.
Super Women talk to her about her story, the differences between independent filmmaking and making programmes for broadcast television, getting things funded, what we can be doing in lockdown to develop new ideas, balancing motherhood with her career and she gives lots of advice for filmmakers.
