Docking Motor Yacht AWOL in Genova (Italy) through the eyes of the Captain
Captain Tristan Mortlock is an award winning Super Yacht Captain with over 15 years experience. He started his yachting career in his teens and now runs one of the most successful charter yachts in the world. Tristan is currently serving on Motor Yacht AWOL, a San Lorenzo SD122, built in 2009. AWOL is a multi award winning yacht and her crew take a lot of pride in their work.
Captain's Vlog is about educating interested parties on what happens onboard a Mega Yacht, Super Yacht and the yachting industry. To share the life of yacht crew and life at sea. The BIG shipyard refits, paint jobs and marine engineering works. To travel some of the worlds most beautiful destinations.
The first owner of the Super Yacht AWOL was non other than Mr Piero Ferrari himself. The wheel house still contains the original Captain's chair with the Ferrari emblem.

Another great video Tristan! Loving the “Captain’s eye view”. I am not sure how many cameras you have, but I would have loved to see at least one of the following views cut into your view: 1- Barbara picking up and securing a ground line, 2- Your hands operating the controls on wing unit, 3- Whoever was working on the stern passing and securing the stern lines to the dock. This concept has probably moved from vlog to documentary with a film crew, but you have created such an appetite for us viewing more and more of you and your crew’s incredibly interesting world.

Beside rough seas the docking is the most difficult aspect of sailing. The master needs to be aware of the inertia and the thrust that he can use to counter. But the starboard side is still blind spot and there is no beep beep thing that is found in cars.

I must agree with others; the music has to be well-background, not fore-ground. I had to kill the audio. It would nice to hear sounds of the wind, boat, crew comms, etc. Beautiful job docking. As the captain, I'm sure you've handled a large craft in much more difficult circumstances. You make it look easy!

I have watched a number of your docking videos but I still don't understand how you get a hold of the ground lines. I understand that on smaller boats you have a lazy line handed from the pier leading to a ground line but the process seems to be different on this huge superyachts where you want the ground lines attached and tightened way before you come even close to the pier. Could you please elaborate?

The music during docking was very loud and unnecessary. It's more instructive to hear the communication with your team. On another boater's channel a television professional recommended the YT channel owner observe how TV news and other content providers handle quiet spots in a broadcast, i.e. sometimes silence is very helpful for your audience to take in what you are presenting. Also, many use music at a low volume for background only, and it should never compete against your focus, i.e. your team communication for something like this. We tune in to hear and see you, not hear loud orchestra or other music. But I love your channel, keep up the good work! Fascinating stuff for many of us.

Tristan mate, I love watching your videos but I was very much looking forward to experiencing the docking with you. Please drop the music from your vids,, we are interested in yachting not clubbing.
