The 1984 James Hardie 1000 was the 25th running of the Bathurst 1000 touring car race. It was held on 30 September 1984 at the Mount Panorama Circuit just outside Bathurst in New South Wales, Australia and was Round 4 of the 1984 Australian Endurance Championship.
This race was celebrated as 'The Last of the Big Bangers', in reference to the Group C touring cars, which were competing at Bathurst for the last time.

Larry Perkins was interviewed about his involvement. Peter Brock approached LP to be co-driver and LP said, yes, but on condition that he also ran the workshop and prepared the car his way. Peter would then be free to do the PR and be lead driver. The result was the typical LP quality race car that was bulletproof. LP also brought his own engine builder who was Holdens chief engineer at the engine plant. The motor they put in the VK was taken right to the edge of compliance with the rule book. It took a week to build. 530hp at 7200 rpm. Its final 304 iteration of which only 50 blocks were made, put out 590hp at 8500 rpm. Each engine cost $18k in 1980s money.

Larry Perkins was also the last driver to win Bathurst with a Holden V8. !995, I think. His was also the only Holden powered Commodore. The rest were running Chevrolet engines afaik.

@@mozzaplaysgames7897 370hp at 5500rpm with 1.5 bar boost. It was a torque monster. My son built the engine after they blew up the factory delivered one. The Bluebird was a lot lighter than the Commodore.

530hp is a lot more stout than the claimed 400hp ish. When you say 50 blocks not sure what your referring too. Short run of Repco L34 style blocks maybe. 595hp 304, I'd question that at nearly 2hp per cubic inch? But I love the narrative!

@BigBadOzBoyMark
@BigBadOzBoyMark 2 жыл бұрын
Yes mate, Gregg Hansford in Moffat’s RX7 rear ended him coming onto Mountain Straight. He was right on the back of him under under brakes and was on the power very early. Basically drove straight into the back of him and buried the front bumper into the diff housing of Grice’s car. Lifted the rear end right off the ground (mid corner). Was a seriously hard hit, and Harrington went backwards into the wall. Not his fault. Ch7 cameras never picked it up but it happened right in front of me on the day.

LMFAO surely you are taking the piss yeah? Listen I can appreciate your brand loyalty and fanboyism for Nissan mate, however if you actually knew anything at all about the Bathurst 1000 or indeed that particular race car, you would know how comically delusional it is for someone to predict a CERTAIN race victory on Lap 1 of a marathon 163 lap race. Therefore I must assume that you my friend are a few bulls short of the top paddock or a comical genius. FYI the Fury Nissan finished the race in 16th place out of the 29 cars that made it to the checkered flag, and coincidentally was the one and only Nissan that actually finished that year's race 😉

Nobody likes a smart arse in the comments but because your a fellow Rotorhead I'll go easy on ya 😁 the truly magnificent RX7s of that era had to run the same engines (race prepped) they came with from the local Mazda Dealer. They were all race prepped naturally aspirated 12a engines (peripheral ported) 259kph down conrod, finished in 3rd place 3.9 seconds from the race winner after 163 laps. Stunning the majority V8 crowd of V8 loyalists in attendance that day, they still got booed on the podium tho, as per Aussie Bogan tradition for anything not Holden/Ford 😆

Dunno if you're taking the piss or a clueless GenZ? The cars from that era of Australian motoring were technically flawed by today's flock of modern snooze fest computers on wheels, the cars back then had character, ALL OF THEM, each one with their own addictive personalities and driving pleasure. They were raw and visceral driving machines excitement dialled up to 11, it's something today's youth will never get to experience or understand what they were missing. Today's cars maybe faster, safer modern marvels but boring by comparison, no soul no character just perfect. They spoil the driver and as such are less satisfying to drive. It's hard to explain to younger guys in words, but I always say if you ever get the chance to go in or drive an older car, anything pre 1998, don't miss the opportunity trust me
