I as a Swedish person can say that to be an English-speaking person, he is close. Yeah, it sounds different of course, compared to a Swedish person saying them. But I also like his dedication to the pronunciation of different or other city names, I also like his effort, to be so great. I can see that he is so great, so I wonder how he learns it. Via Google Translates speak button. (Copying the city name into Google Translate in Swedish then translating it to English, and then pressing the voice to speak button. So the AI reads what you have written.)

What i love about our main station in Stockholm is that the concourse part used to be the platform area, but as the city grew we just kinda moved the tracks elsewhere and kept the old part as an indoor area. (Also dug a subway and now a commuter train station underneath)

Not really true though. The concourse is located where the tracks used to be, but the station hall is a “new” build from 1927. Ah, Bastuträsk, that brings back memories. I used to take that train when I did my military service (Boden was heavily garrisoned back in the day) and due to our schedule we rarely went by the trains specifically chartered by the military. But if they had one thing in common, it was that they could get stuck along the route. And if that happened, it was almost always in Bastuträsk.

I used to live in Boden,Kiruna, svappavaara and we went to Luleå at times... such great memories. Will always remember the summer camp I went to as a kid with my siblings. The north of Sweden is special...people are more relaxed and the seasons are true to their name. Now I live in Örebro-kommun (central sweden) and I miss the north...perhaps its childhood nostalgia but hope to revisit it one day. Thank you for re-awakening old memories...gosh I miss those times.

@@macjonte no, in practice it will function as a double track to the current railway, with most passenger trains running along the coast with the old alignment being mostly used by goods trains. The predicted passenger numbers aren’t enough to justify building double track. Just like it’s southern cousin, the bothnia railway. It was built for basically the same reason about a decade ago running along the coast connecting Sundsvall, Örnsköldsvik and Umeå along others. It too was built single tracked and it seems to have worked out. The norrbotnia railway will have two tracks at all of its stations meaning that there probably won’t be any problems unless a train is severely delayed.

Luleå is quite a bit south of the Arctic circle so it is technically not in the Arctic. The service was much better when SJ operated it. When VY took over prices almost doubled and extreme delays became the norm. The carriages ar also starting to be very worn. With the high prices and poor on time record you are much better off taking the plane and paying for an extra night in a hotel.

Just a quick FYI, the only trains that stop at the underground station at Stockholm Central (known as Stockholm City) are the SL commuter trains (the blue and white X60s). All other trains, including the more long-distance commuter trains, stop at the overground station.

Actually Vy runs almost all arctic trains in north of Sweden because they also, as a standard, go to some larger cities in Norway and vice versa. In addition, some railways in Norway’s travel network is not electrified yet. Since SJ have made a pledge that all our domestic travel will be by 100% reusable energy we can’t travel everywhere where diesel trains are needed. Therefore, SJ still have some travels to and from Norway while Norway have some travels to and from Sweden

As a Swede, I can confirm that it is a generally very expensive country, and train travel is generally extremely expensive a lot of the time unless you can find a really good deal on a ticket. I live outside of Gothenburg and used to travel to Stockholm on a regular basis and there were times where I saw tickets for upwards of 800kr for a one way ticket in second class, it’s a journey that by X2000 takes less than 3 hours! When I saw such prices I just shook my head and muttered that I just wanted to purchase a ticket, not the whole damn train!

@@Stefan_Boerjesson I used to avoid SJ when I went to Stockholm just because of how overpriced they were even on SJ Regional (that are awful to travel with and takes too long) so I’d go with MTR Express instead where I’d sometimes get at least one of my tickets for less than 300kr (usually the ticket to Stockholm) and the trip back home would often be about 500kr. SJ on the same days around the same time would be significantly more expensive even on Regional. I haven’t been to Stockholm for little over 3 years now though so wouldn’t be surprised if the prices have gone up since

In the summer this train can be worth to take even on the most cheapest seats, especially the later train going southbound. Because then you will have sunlight pretty much the whole way and you can witness the beautiful mountains and fjords from the train. Did that back in June 2019 and it was amazing. (Got no sleep though but with the view I saw, yep still worth it)

I travelled that train 15 years ago to Bastutrask before getting a connecting bus to Skelleftea. Certainly seems to have been upgraded since then. I had a 3 birth sleeper compartment with toilets but the showers were at the end of the carriage.

3:31 - I have had no problem with the seating, though I've not used it to sleep in. Not much worse than travelling on the X3000. It certainly beats standing up half the journey which I did once. I was travelling home for christmas from the southern Sweden. However heavy snow caused some considerable delays causing me to miss my connection in Stockholm. Being christmas time all the trains were fully booked, but the nice lady managed get me on this train. I just stood in the hallway about up to Sundsvall. It wasn't terrible, but it was a relief to be able to take an open seat.

In my younger days it was possible to buy tickets on the train. You couldn’t know if it was full. Once I had to stand in the middle compartment between wagons for an hour. It was a snowstorm _inside_. Happy 90s with 17% interest rate and ozon holes.

I took the same train from Luleå to Stockholm last spring. Really nice with good food and beer! Quite expensive, but for me as Swede living in Värmland, it was great to see the rural North in daylight and having my own little "bedroom".

I have taken this train from my hometown of Luleå to Stockholm and back many times since 2012 for conventions, visiting friends and festivals. I have tried the sitting cart (most of the times), laying cart? (Ligg vagn) (every now and then) and the first class suit by chance. They all are pretty okay and you meet very social and interesting people while traveling. The longest train ride I have been on so far in Sweden is Luleå to Malmö which takes about 19 hours including a layover in Stockholm to switch trains. I recommend to take the train during the summer (in June). You will see a lot more of the landscape because of the midnight sun.

Having lived right next to a meaningful crossroading train station in Finland which used to run trains to every major direction (Helsinki, Tampere all the way to Lappland, Eastern border all the way to St.Petersburg in Russia, etc) I've rode similar types of trains all my life, commuter trains, long distance trains, all that. There's always some kind of special feeling to riding an overnight train, especially in the summer when the darkness only lasts for like 2 hours before sun starts rising again :) I do feel like travelling by trains such as this one is a bit on the expensive side comprared to the level of luxury it offers. I mean you could book flights from Finland to Spain and back + 3 nights in a 3 star hotel for the same price :D But yeah, it's still a cool experience, even if tad expensive.

As a resident of Kiruna - you really did not come far enough North. By far the best bit of the Journey is Kiruna-Narvik - the scenary is breathtaking. Trains 93/94 run overnight direct via Boden where the train splits to Luleå. Although you don't get the first class cabins this far North (we are oft forgotten - but apparently coming sometime..).

About Bastuträsk: In the Norther part of Sweden (as well as, for some odd reason, Gotland in the Baltics) träsk means lake. Så it is really Sauna Lake. Still funny for us southerners however. 🙂

Me and some friends recently took this train all the way to Kiruna, so even further North, and it was an amazing experience. We only managed to get basic seats even when we booked over a month in advance because most spots were already full, but thankfully we did manage to get a spot with a table after asking a few passengers if they were willing to swap seats with us. Sleeping was definitely a challenge in those seats (though a part of that will have been that we're not used to it at all), but apart from that the journey was great. Sitting with the other passengers was great, while playing some very bureaucratic monopoly we met some Italian guys that were going all the way to the end of the line all the way in Norway, had a great chat with them. The food was also very nice (except for maybe the chicken salad thing, it was more of a sad than a salad), some very unique things I hadn't seen before, if all a bit expensive (but then if you're going on a journey there a bit of money for some food isn't a huge deal). The part I think I loved the most was going all the way to the very back of the train and watching out of the rear window as the train went through many tunnels and bends in Northern Sweden in a beautiful sunset, it'll be long before I forget that view (though it doesn't beat the views from the area we hiked in over there). We were going to take the way back in a sleeping cabin, but sadly we had to take a plane as another train derailed because of the massive storm going on in middle Sweden at that time so our rescheduled ticket would've caused us to miss our connection back home. I'd definitely recommend taking the journey there, the way there is a very unique experience, there's a beautiful hiking trail there, and there's also a surprising amount of stuff you can do in / around the city of Kiruna. Maybe at some point I'll do it again.

I took the Vy train in the summer, in the sleeping wagon, and it was hell. The cabins or rooms or whatever were extremely poorly ventilated and suffocatingly hot. It was also really loud but that's fair enough I guess. On the way back it was even worse somehow. Basically, I didn't sleep much either way. In conclusion, just take the seated carriage it's both cheaper and more comfortable.

I tried the SJ version of this first class sleeper Östersund - Stockholm and return later and also got free coffee and a free hotel breakfast after reaching destination on both journeys. In Stockholm,Hotel Continental in the opposite to Stockholm C and Hotel Gamla Teatern In the centre of Östersund a bit up from the station. About the same price. I folded down the top bunk and kept the seats below. Not difficult when you get the hang of it. Good Swedish pronunciation of the names of places.

I have ridden that one many times. Nothing special, except maybe if you go in first class sleeping cabin. But Luleå is worth a visit in the winter. All around the year actually. You can continue your travel by train to Narvik. That is a guaranteed spectacular trip.

SKellefteå is schedueld to get a railroad for passenger trains when the norrbottniabana is completed in a few years :) and its about 70k in the whole country, which includes bastuträsk. in the town itself its about 35k but ever growning thanks to northvolt and other industries

Definitely check out the Christmas decorations in Chicago's union station! This year, they put up a huge Christmas tree decorated with train-related ornaments, mostly signs taken from throughout the history of American railroads. Pretty neat!

I would've loved to have taken this train this past June, but it never showed up on SJ's booking website, and attempts by a Swedish friend to book locally were unsuccessful either. I ended up catching the morning train from Stockholm, changing in Umeå, and continuing on to Luleå. It was a pity I could not take this train due to SJ's lousy booking system. I should note on a visit several years ago, I booked the reverse trip, which finally showed up on SJ's system just two months before my travels. I hope SJ gets its act together upon my next visit!

I would like to point out that the reason the 80's Rc6 is the one pulling you along this trip is that Sweden really doesn't have any decent alternative locomotives or trains capable of doing that harsh journey to the north. If the weather turns sour, any other train on offering would have to "pull over". Yes, there are some locomotives that would still make the trip. But those are slower and/or not available to this operator. Either way, those RcX locomotives might be old, but they have been continually upgraded through the years and they are super reliable, cheap and easy to maintain. So are their wagons. They were built in Sweden for Sweden and have rarely let the Swedes down unlike all attempts at replacing them.

In Finland we have also many places where the word "träsk" means a lake. Most well known is Järvenpää, a city of 45 000 people, whose name means "lake's end" and is in Swedish Träskända.

Well - this is an old video, I know, but as someone that has travelled in that exact seating cabin all the way up to Kiruna with the heating turned off for some two hours due to technical problems, it actually was okay, mind you that I had two seats for myself which meant that I could lay down at least a bit, but I'd opt for the couchettes at least so you could get a good nights sleep before climbing up the Kebnekaise, something that I didn't get :)

I thought it was nice how you always found something positive to say about things. Even if more criticism could be warranted. The ticket sounded pricey but I suspect that's partly because you booked it a week before departure (always more expensive) and that it was first class deluxe. Cozy video!
