Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg starting writing this movie when they were teenagers. By the time they were able to make it, they were too old to play the leads, so Rogan made himself the cop. Goldberg is strictly behind the camera. Jonah Hill wanted the role, and Rogan thought he was too old. Then he read for it (on the set of Knocked Up) and mailed it.

It is a bittersweet ending but that’s what is so nice. It isn’t a perfect ending and that’s what makes it realistic. There was a video essay I watched a while ago on why Superbad is the best comedy and it points out so many of these things. It’s sad cause they are finally growing up and even though they will see each other again, they won’t see each other offer so it’s like a goodbye to being childhood bestfriend and figure out their new relationship.

I think the ending shows that you don't have to be with your best friend 24/7, it's OK to spend time with someone you're interested in too. If you don't then you won't gain independence or learn to be a grown up. They also finally started to spend time with the girls in the correct way, Seth realized that he was going too fast in his life by wanting to get hammered and sleep with a girl at such a young age

Back in the good old days of the 80's...we had Industrial Arts class where we made stuff like bottle openers out of bar steel, ice scrapers out of plexiglass, gun racks and fishing rod holders and with the teacher's permission, we could make baseball bats and pretend guns for recess and the older kids were allowed to make sheath knives. We had Home Economics in high school, but I took Typing instead, so I could learn how to type faster to code the Commodore 64 in Gifted Class. When I was a senior, I took shop where we tore down and rebuilt tractor engines and painted cars and stuff for the county. It was pretty cool, but we mostly spent the time telling dirty jokes. A few of the kids in the class spent some time in juvenile hall for various things.

Some good references for Vancouver, BC people here. Steve Fogel is a real guy they based the character McLovin off of. The Granville Street liquor store reference is great, because there used to be one near 15th Avenue. Christopher Mintz-Plasse butchers the pronunciation of Granville and comes off like a tourist, but that's fine. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Steve Fogel all went to West Point Grey Secondary School in Vancouver and the local news TV channel (CTV News or Global News, I think) did a good story on the real Steve Fogel when the movie came out. The realism goes far beyond where you think it goes. Mr. Fogel took it well, but they destroy him in this movie hilariously. He's not quite that nerdy in real life, or he isn't now. 3 cheers for politically incorrect comedy!
