Alex literally said what they needed. Get security level 1, go to sub level and get security level 2 from another computer in visitors center. They only got clearance 1 and left.

the error was actually several episodes ago, when Brett noted but did not PUSH the crate at the bottom of the raptor pen to "stop the raptors from entering the visitor center". i am sure if we pay attention when they click the motion sensor pole checkpoints, the "your task" message still is stuck on that. it means the 'clear the ship of dinos' objective never properly started, and even after getting security clearance one, the "ship will remain in dock" computer message isn't triggerable. i'm following along, and I got the ship comms thing to work, even with only security clearance 1. i wrote a longer comment about this above, basically the issue is "objective clogging" where they aren't aware they are actually still on an earlier objective because there's no proper quest status screen.

Watching this playthrough makes me feel better that I was never able to finish this game as a kid. There's no way that 8 year old me was going to beat this. It was fun shooting dinosaurs though lol.

17:45 "Access Denied." This is where their error earlier at the bottom of the Raptor Pen came home to roost. basically, they have not completed two objectives by this point (even though the have gone through the motions). 1) at the bottom of the raptor pen, Brett looked at but did not PUSH the crate to block the raptors from entering the visitor center. therefore the objective never switched to the next one properly "clear the ship of dinos." if he had pushed the crate, the dino count would appear while on the ship as he defeats them. then once THAT is "officially" completed, NOW accessing this computer in the raptor pen here does not give an access denied message. it instead says "SHIP AUTO PILOT ENGAGED. SAILING PROCEDURE CANCELLED. SHIP WILL REMAIN IN DOCK. MESSAGE ENDS..." I know all this because I am playing along and made sure to push the crate. I'll add a comment to the earlier video where they ALMOST pushed the crate but did not, instead exploring the night vision raptor nest room at the bottom of the Raptor Pen, then going into the elevator back to the Visitor Center lab without pushing the crate. even if alex and jirard had been watching, the same mistake might have been made unless one of them was like "wait, before you leave, did we actually PUSH the crate?" in most games reaching this location would trigger a cutscene or something, since "getting here" is the real accomplishment that should progress things, not just a UNIQUE physical action to perform. (as a side note, in the DOS/Amiga version of this game, which some say is like this but on steroids but I haven't played it, apparently you push a lot of crates in dark rooms, but in this game you only do it once I think.) The funny thing is, they and the guide say "ellie satler's card is useless", but it actually would have allowed them to go backward from the visitor center into that elevator into the raptor pen near the crate and would save their bacon right here, IF the game had properly telegraphed that the "Stop the raptors from entering the visitor center" objective was not finished, and what needed to be done and where. right here they plan to go back to the ship, not knowing the error is nearby in the raptor pen. without a better status feedback, they maybe would NEVER have fixed this without losing their save file and having to re-do all the steps. In general the game fails to telegraph info like this, and that could lead to you getting stuck. i call this "objective clogging". another example of poor telegraphing is the very beginning. "Turn on the generator and reboot the main computer." "Even if the game threw in "the generator is in the nublar shed to the south" would help, but also, "but you'll also need Nedry's ID card to get into the visitor center computer room, and he was last seen in the southwest forest near the beach utility shed." this game is brutal due to 1) sparse objective telegraphing, and 2) lack of a save feature. and maybe 3) the maps are visually similar and confusing sometimes. This game is super innovative and ambitious for its time, having an open world, first person view, and even quest objectives. a proper inventory screen showing the quest objective status like breath of the wild, would help a lot. of course the simple answer to "objective clogging" is to make the objectives non-linear and all tracked at once, so you could do them in any order. that's how I'm doing it for my game inspired by this one, currently code-named CC.
