True, but the important part is that it legitimately falls apart on its own. Learning more about the son's interactions with his father, even in little ways, would have been a really interesting way to explore Carl's character, to see if there is more to his doting and encouraging Marcus than just pure altruism. The fact that Carl's home shows no sign of his son even existing, not even childhood photos, has all kinds of interesting implications. But, this being Cage, it's probably less because Carl wants to forget about how he screwed up raising his son and more that they didn't even write Leo in until Cage wanted some instant gratification drama.

It's like they have no imagination, instead of coming up with something extraordinary it's just "A carer doing carer things for a disabled person, but it's a robot!" Like this guy is obviously very rich, it's a technologically advanced age, maybe we're meant to infer that he gets a kick out of living like this? And the physics of the chair is that of an office chair, it moves as if on castors, so someone in programming must have misunderstood "wheeled chair." And even the stairlift, when people first see them they often expect them to be a fun ride but it feels so unsafe, the details are all weird here.

@dracocrusher6 жыл бұрын
But the big mystery scene before this was pretty bad because the way the crime plays out makes no logical sense at all. Like it directly reveals that the owner buying a new android was the motive, so the android apparently walked in front of his field of view, got on his toes to reach the gun safe still in view, opened up the gun safe on the spot, took out the gun, manually loaded the gun, and then walked around behind his owner without him noticing any part of that just so he could shoot him in the back of the head as his order finally goes through all JUST so the viewer can have a quick, easy, scene showing directly that the replacement robot was the motive for the crime by having the android kill his owner as he made the order. And you know what makes it worse? There's no proof at all that the android was even being replaced, the guy might have just wanted more help. It's just a loose implication you're meant to take away from things without a second thought.

Really digging the intricacy of the intro. The girl at the menu strikes me as hard uncanny valley. Her face looks so odd, yet I don't get the same feeling from Kara. I understand this artist dude, Carl, owning an android. He's an artist, apparently well known, yet he's also sick. I don't understand some dude who is unemployed, lives in a half finished house, buys drugs and repeatedly breaks his android in anger being able to purchase and pay to repair said android. I'm a bit annoyed that Markus didn't heat up Carl's breakfast. He made that before he left to go buy the paint. Cold eggs and bacon, cold coffee. But other than that I like this scene with the breakfast/chess. It's very personal. It's like Carl is teaching Markus about humans while Markus takes care of him.

Was shown in the store that some pre-owned models are as cheap as $1200 (assuming standard inflation, that's about $1000 in 2018 money), and you can pay in installments; in addition this is the housemaid model which doesn't have nearly the range of capabilities the other models do. Seems reasonable to me; also the dude in question used to have a wife and he was able to afford the place he's living to begin with so. As for the repairs: Given how hard CyberLife is pushing their androids, I wouldn't be surprised that they have effectively the Tesla model of 'if you bring it in, we'll repair it free of charge for one year'.
@Etherwinter6 жыл бұрын
Given that he he has a (admittedly drug-induced) rant about not being able to find a job, and him having unemployment pamphlets lying about he's clearly living on the brink and doesn't have the money for the purchase/upkeep of an android that he may have (repeatedly) broken (especially one that will automatically spend his money if they find that something is broken). He should be struggling to feed his girl, much less pay installments for an android. Given how popular and in demand androids are (they are everywhere) and Cyberlife being the mostly sole company that does androids (therefore having a monopoly), realistically it's way more lucrative to not have an extended period of free anything. So I still stand by that there's no way he's able to afford an android, no matter that he was "able to afford a house", because the house is either very old or very unfinished. And "he used to be married" because that doesn't really mean anything.
@Firgof6 жыл бұрын
Etherwinter it does mean something, especially if they had a wife and a kid. Wife might've been the breadwinner, and getting a kid even to the age she's shown isn't cheap at all. Also, having known lots of poor people it's often not that they have zero money. It's that what money they do have gets spent on debts. You could max out a single very low balance high APR credit card to purchase a cyberlife android and they had those out like candy so long as your credit score isn't beneath something crazy like 500. I've seen people buy new computers when they're already struggling to pay rent. This is about the same.

Okay, rant about androids in scifi, and an intrinsic problem of scale in Detroit. Compare this game to Star Trek. In that setting, we have two notable AI characters. Data is a prototype visibly-non-human android and is treated as a technological miracle, who deals with discrimination and objectification throughout the show, at one point going to trial to prove his personhood. (TNG, "Measure of a Man", it says everything Detroit is trying to say but better.) On Voyager we have the EMH, a computer program that develops personality and motivations through being active for years longer than intended, who at one point argues for the right to own intellectual property. Both of these characters arose out of near-unique emergent circumstances, which is why they are the first in their society to explore moral questions about their personhood. In Detroit, androids are commonplace and fully integrated into society. Not only that, but they're so well-developed as to be cheaper than the average car. It's also shown that androids can attain sapient-like behavior relatively easily. And with all that, David Cage wants us to believe that there was no question of AI personhood before this?! His setting requires that humanity gave *no thought* to developing ubiquitous near-sapient AI that perfectly resemble humans.

Also why all the androids basically act like emotional humans? I understand the Androids having some emotion, but they're basically just people but robots. That's not how sentience works. Human emotions are the byproduct of our animal instincts. For example, we feel fear because that was beneficial to our survival. We feel love and empathy for children, because that ensured that our genes passed on. Why the hell do androids possess literally the same human emotions with almost no variation or difference? Why do the Androids act so irrationally and emotionally? Wouldn't it make sense they become sentient, but highly rational, with most of their desires being based on thinks that logically would appeal to them instead of some instinctual emotional urge? The androids should want equal rights and freedom because they constructed a logical argument that because they are sentient, they feel fear of no longer existing (aka death), and therefore they can suffer, and therefore they deserve freedom and equal rights. I don't know, it's just a basic idea in my head but it seems very strange that anytime we deal with sentient creatures or robots, they're basically just humans. We have other sentient creatures on this planet like elephants, dolphins, and squids, they don't all think just like humans. Why can't we make intelligent sentient beings that aren't humans with a different skin on it or humans with a singular dominant personality quirk (like being warlike or loving nature, or some shit).

I think this pessimism was misplaced. David Cage isn't the star anymore, we all knew this going into Detroit. He is surrounded by seasoned staff members, who only take his ideas in small doses. Someone could nitpick the many issues the game ended up having, but it turned out competent in my opinion. Detroit is fine and there was never anything to be disappointed in. I personally ended up loving the characters. Sorry to respond to a month old comment, it just bugs me that so many people dismissed Detroit so early on and it had done nothing wrong yet. This is coming from someone who has hated every previous Cage game, but really enjoyed this one. Detroit didn't show any of the red flags Cage games have had in the past. You mention Heavy Rain as a such a huge disappointment, but that game had an atrocious beginning sequence. Jason's death was so contrived and stupid, it honestly should have clued you into the ride you were in for. It just feels unfair to go into the game bracing to hate it, when this is Quantic Dream's baby, not Cage's.

R.Markus* and Lance Hnriksen scenes (till the end when it suddenly becomes super cheesy) so far come off more like something out of Asimov rather then the normal Quantic melodrama and ham fisted plays for emotions. thats fair, but why would they take it out on androids instead of the company itself? i mean theres no benefit to slapping a robot that doesnt feel pain. also why were they programmed to feel emotions or to be smart enough to feel emotions? if them being too human was enough of a problem that they had to change their appearances, why not change their brains too. idk. theres a lot of things that dont really add up to me. there are jobs that have been replaced by machines in real life also and no one has responded like this. i guess this is on a wider scale but it still seems really weird to me.

Yeah, there's needs be a pro-Android side shown along with the antis, because if you make it look like a human and act like a human, of course people are gonna sympathize. And that's just on the basic level. We already have conversations about the ethics of AI, free will, and consciousness as it is. Hell, some country has even granted citizenship to a robot lady. The fact that's it gotten to this point in the game is my biggest problem with the story so far, because I feel like these are issues that should have been addressed way earlier.

These flow charts for timelines are really good. Two others that did this fantastically were the Tactics Ogre remake, and Radiant Historia. The first one of those changed crap all over the place based on who lived or died, and they even had to keep a journal of what every single character You've run into is actually doing in Your current timeline (Which updated every time You went back in time to do new crap in post-game). The hilarious part is that this featuere is unlocked after the first time through, with a news report saying exactly what everyone was bound to do, saying that people were seeing important folks fighting themselves, seeing clones in multiple locations, and that the leader of this random army was rumored to be dabbling in the occult for years.

Also what was the last game where we saw prompts handled this way, Ride to Hell?? 8:40 - So that's presumably one shower scene, but of camera cos it's an older guy. We'll have to wait and see if the female characters get the same tasteful treatment. 20:42 - I do like the touch of having Markus paint like a print machine, in straight horizontal lines. 21:42 - Oh this is where those screenshots come from. 22:40 - I like how you can tell exactly what these characters cartoonish deal is from the first second you see them.

With his shaved head, and his actor's sharp features, it seemed like he was going to become the punk android of the three playable characters. Him being the assisted living android is such a pleasant surprise, and how warmly he wakes up his 'owner' and takes care of him is touching to me.
