This series brings back a innocent time of my life and childhood memories of the early 90s. We did not have all these DC/Marvel tv and movie then like we had now. But it was awesome that we had a Superboy tv series, the Flash and a Batman movie. Gerard Christopher and Season 2 and onwards was just good. Both Haynes-Newton( who actually got fired for a DUI) and Christopher needs to appear in the Supergirl series!!!
@alucard6245 жыл бұрын
The DUI story is disputed by many, including John himself. The reality is that he wanted more money due to having perform a lot of the dangerous stunts himself versus using a stunt man. The Salkinds used that as well as a ticket he received for parking somewhere he shouldn't have as an excuse to fire him.

Really liked this video. Superboy was my childhood favorite. And so I naturally drawn to this show (even though out of comics by then), The Road Not Taken was my favorite of them all. It had a fun comic sequel showing a lot more parallel Superboys. I really expected the 2nd actor to move on to getting a movie either on TV or actually on in the movies. Enjoyed this a lot--brought back lots of memories. Quick correction: toward the end of your video (approx 14:16) you say, "...another TV station..." In reality, ABC is a TV network and owns a lot of local stations (as do all of the big linear networks). ABC itself is not a station--it is a network. I know, I know, nit picky for sure. Considering it was so low budget, they did pretty well with what they had. My favorite episodes that you missed here were the one in season one, where Lana gets held by a well meaning, but slightly deranged mad scientist; the two separate ones where he fights the body stealing alien gas; ... season 2 where he meets _Brimstone_ and learns his vulnerability to magic; the two separate ones where he befriends and then fights the tortured son of Count Dracula; Season 3 where he has to face a fire demon who walks the earth when a tribe of men learn to fly; and season 4, where Lex amped up all his powers, and the one where everyone thought he was dead. One particular note is that the episode “Lost” (season 3 I believe) was a remake of “Panic in the Sky” from the George Reeves series. That story was also remade for Lois & Clark as “All Shook Up”. Another major change from the first to the second season is that production moved from MGM to Universal Studios, both in Orlando. I saw an episode of Superboy being shot in Universal Studios in 1990. According to the description, it was "Roads Not Taken", though I believe they only shot a very short clip of the actor's close-up for the audience's sake. When I watched the actual episode I could recognize the backlot and everything, but maybe, just maybe, they used only a few seconds of what was shot while I was watching. I videotaped it on 16mm, so the picture is rather poor, but I have uploaded the footage to KZbin. Sorry, no videotaping was allowed during the actual shoot. Look for it.

I would catch the first part, tune in the next week only for the show to not be there. It was so hard to watch this show regularly in my area. They were always changing the time slot, and moving it around. This show deserves way more attention than it got. Sherman Howard's portrayal of Lex is still my favorite version of the character. Great Retrospective! I adored this show since it started in 1988. I think it lacked popularity because it was a syndicated series, not a Network series. (That's also probably what saved it from a quick cancellation after the 1st season) It was bounced around different days, networks and times. I'd seen it on NBC at 12pm, later bumped for season 2 to 7:30pm. Then it found a home on UPN 9 at 12:00pm and finally 4:30. lol Gerard Christopher went on to become a Producer and writer for Superboy and he helped put in the top 10 of syndicated series. I Loved that tid-bit about Donna Bullock and Smallville. I'm an administrator of Superboy Theater on FB, (Feel free to join if you haven't!) I'll be sure to share this video with the group. Fun Fact. The Salkinds deal (directly with DC, not WB) stated they had access to ANY DC character from a Superman or Superman related book. Also, WB wanted the rights to Superman back. It convinced DC it was in the publisher's best interest to let WB have first pass and complete control over the films and shows. John Haymes Newton was allegedly fired from the series after the first season due to a DUI or something and the Salkinds were worried he'd project the wrong image due to that. The funny thing that I've always noticed is that both actors probably had trouble with the flight stunts when "leveling off" because both actors seemed to have consistent trouble keeping both arms up and straight most of time when it came to "flying".
@Joelikesmoviesnstuff5 жыл бұрын
I've heard several different reasons for why John Haymes Newton did not return for Season 2. I don't know for sure what's true and what's not.
@obsidiansands5 жыл бұрын
@@Joelikesmoviesnstuff...it's why I said "allegedly". Anyhow, the alleged DUI thing was what spread to us in the Philippines when it was on, I wasn't sure if it was true or not - but it was that excuse that stuck in my head ever since. "Superboy" would almost always come on along with "My Secret Identity", both good shows from my childhood.

The show was very popular and mamynfana loved it. It was not canceled because of a lack of ratings. It was canceled because of the networks CEO not liking it.
@Joelikesmoviesnstuff3 жыл бұрын
hi ForestTre, it might have been slightly more popular during Season 4 than Season 1. But when it was on, I used to hang out in different comic stores all the time, and I had a difficult time finding other people who had heard of it.
@ForestTre3 жыл бұрын
@@Joelikesmoviesnstuff Hello Joe, So did I. And in all of them I found people who loved it. Also I worked for Universal in Orlando where it was filmed. That's how I have an inside scoop as to why it was canceled. I got to see first hand just how popular the show was from the peoples reactions to the set tours of the show. And I had a lot of friends who worked on the show(stage hands. Film crew and extras). So I got to pick everyone's brains. The producers were as shocked as we were when it was canceled. But the show did prove that Comics could be made into tv shows and people loved them. It along with producers like Robert Townsend and Swamp thing opened the door for shows like Lois and Clark and Smallville. It showed us what works and what doesn't on the tv screen and the movie screen.

I enjoyed your retrospective of the Superboy series! Revisiting the show in the present, it is painfully obvious that they were working with a very small production budget. I remember one scene that was supposed to take place on a highway. It actually looks more like they filmed it in a parking lot. You mentioned Ron Ely (pronounced Ee-lee); he unfortunately is in the news recently about a family tragedy. I didn't remember his part in _Superboy,_ but I certainly watched the _Tarzan_ series back in its time.

@@Joelikesmoviesnstuff In The Complete First Season DVD set, I started reviewing the episode _The Jewel of Techacal_ (written by none other than Fred Freiberger). In one scene, Superboy is pursuing Lex and his henchman who have stolen a dangerous artifact. Some shots are on ordinary roadways free of any traffic and surrounded by large grassy areas. Key moments, however, are staged on a large paved area. There are no road lines or parking lot lines visible, but in one take large markings are partially visible. I am now suspecting the location for these scenes might be an airport. The show was produced in Orlando, so I briefly scanned the local airports. Still today, the Orlando Apopka Airport has similar features. Walt Disney World itself may also have supplied these kind of locations.

I was living in Sebring, FL when this was being produced. They were filming an episode in Lake Wales about 25 miles from me. So went up and watched a days filming. Got to meet most of the main actors and stunt people. Watching what went on in a very long day for about 2 minutes actual airtime showed me that I would never want to be an actor. The Superboy costume was comic accurate and looked very comfortable, the actors were all nice and seemed like normal people but production crew were pains. All in all a fond memory of this series plus some cool photos I took that day as souvenirs. Wish they would release this whole series on DVD.

I recall watching this show when I was a kid, yet I don't actually remember any details. However, I also collected the tie-in comic series and when looking at those covers brings back memories. I did wind up rewatching the series a few years back. The first season comes off as cheap. Not just in terms of production, but also in writing. It was a bit of a chore to binge. Season 2 saw an uptick in quality in writing, but it still felt weak. Then Season 3 is where it felt they finally nailed it the writing. I guess this is why they didn't change anything for Season 4. I argue it wasn't wholly silly fun. The better moments were where it dipped into drama without getting too dark and depressing. It feels like they honestly tried to make a Superboy TV series, but kind of gave up and made it as Superman as they could without explicitly saying so. Also, fun fact: both stars Gerard Christopher and Sherman Howard wrote a pair of different episodes (both one in each for the latter two seasons). By the way, worth noting that Andy returned for a Season 3 episode. Oddly, they spelled his last name in the credits for the episode as McAllister with the only other spelling present in the onscreen title of Season 2's "The Haunting of Andy McAlister ".
