Continuing our step-by-step construction of a free flight electric model airplane powered by a supercapacitor. The model makes use of styrofoam picnic plates and supermarket meat trays for its basic structure. Build and fly one of these with the kids, they'll love it, and so will you! The prototype model we've based this build on just turned in a 50 second flight during testing!

I guess I've known Richie since about 1980...at the time he was the only modeler I knew personally. His old man was a builder from way back and got Rich started in it when he was a kid. I met him when we both worked at Zero Corporation... they make those nice aluminum briefcases (Halliburton) that all the cocaine dealers in the movies seem to favor....and a lot of military contracts too. Sorry to hear your flying buddies have moved on. Cherish those memories, I'm sure your friends would be glad to know they are fondly remembered. Put up a flight in their memory every now and again.

Nice job, Mike. Please tell Richie hello. I’m gonna catch up to this point and see how it looks. It’s coming along, though. 👍🏼

I'll give Richie the shout out for you! Making video for what I think will be the last episode today, trying to figure out how to convey certain info on a video is a challenge! I think I have it covered tho'! Pics you sent look just like my plane, I'd say you will have successful flights...keep at it!

sonex413 Ok... I’m all caught up. I have concerns about moisture in the field. Think I’m gonna spray my airplane with a very light coat of something. Maybe hairspray, To lock out dampness. Still waiting for my caps to arrive. Will prolly create my charging port tonight sometime. Would Love to create a much larger rc version at some point down the road. Thanks again for all the hard work putting this series together for us all!

@@BadChizzle That foam is 100% waterproof, moisture absolutely is not a problem with this material...one reason we like it...the other is it's free! Only the balsa pcs need protection. Putting up part 5 right now, takes you to completion, one more coming on paintjob and test flying. If we didn't have 35 mph winds today, I'd be out test flying right now....

sonex413 it’s the glue joints I’m troubled with, Mike. I’m not using waterproof white glue. So in gonna just cover those areas.

@@BadChizzle I doubt that whatever you're using would be sensitive to humidity in the air...when they say waterproof they generally mean when soaked in water for some time...if you do use something, try it on scrap first. Charger building video finally done, will upload when I get a decent wifi signal, ain't happenin' right now.....take care

Yo Mike, what did you do for a living? Engineer? Technical writer? I can tell you’re no dummy. The jury’s still out on Richie, though.

Mostly Quality Control in manufacturing, from inspection to supervision, although I also worked 18 years as a Master Tech at a Yamaha/Kawasaki dealership owned by a family I've known since school days. I studied Mechanical Engineering At UMass, but to be honest, I've learned more from pursuing my own interests, like modeling, over the years.
