Only 2 of these Mercedes SLRs exist in the world. Both cars are owned by Mercedes and have never been put up for sale.
The car now sold for (135m EUR) $143,000,000 on May 5th 2022

What a beast! I`m 60 years old, born about 10km in distance to this „secret place“. My Grandpa worked his whole life „beim Daimler“, his first boss was Rudolf Uhlenhaut. He told us all the stories about this great engineer and their dominance in racing. Thanks for this nice video reminding me to my hometown and childhood.

Yeah, relatively easily on almost any modern superbike. And they'll also get there much more quickly. The top speed of Japanese road bikes is restricted to 300kph by the use of limiters and/or gearing. That doesn't mean they can't be derestricted, which is something that is necessary for racing. But yea, 300kph is relatively easy to hit on a superbike. I've certainly seen it on the clock on a couple of bikes, though I know that they'd probably have been shy of that real speed by close to 20kph or so. Never really felt the need to go faster, 'cos you're approaching other vehicles at some very significant speeds.

I was passed on the Autobahn A45 by one of those two cars back in the 1960s. I have no way of knowing whether it was Mr. Uhlenhaut behind the wheel, but I have always fantasized that it was and he was on a secret mission of some kind. Just remembering it 50 years later the sound of that exhaust gives me goosebumps today. Incredible machine. I had forgotten that it has 8 cylinders, unlike the W198.

And the "sound" of the engine was already "castrated". In order to obtain a road licence, Uhlenhaut had to have a silencer installed on his "company car" (the one with the blue interior), which was placed on the right-hand side outside the bodywork, thick, fat and grumpy (i.e. not nice at all).

Rudolf Uhlenhaut was the engineer that designed the racing version of that car (convertible) and then the 300SL roadcars. He also designed that specific car, two were built and he took one of them as his daily driver. Mercedes owns both today. Some of most beautiful, elegant, ahead of their time machines ever built. Great video of something not often seen.

One reason for the end of the program was the accident at Le Mans. Don’t bother with a comma if you’re not going to use accents. Trust me it makes you look bloody stupid, I mean even I’m overwhelmed by them because full stops and commas are very similar. Place them where you feel they’re needed and not when you don’t feel as if they are if you are an American though, put a comma after words like because and and. I’m from the uk so, it’s not in our language to do so. I completely understand and agree you though. But you may want to tell that guy you were saying the 300 SLR was what you were talking about.

Absolute magnificence. The Uhlenhaut coupe is by & far the most impressive vehicle ever built. Mercedes -under Rudi's direction-took the chassis of the W196 Grand Prix car & put a gullwing body on it. This beast is still good for 200+ MPH. And it's ROAR-I got to hear a W196 at Long Beach in 1976 with Fangio driving it. Good thing Ewe told bonehead to get away from the exhaust-otherwise someone might have got a bit hot. And deaf. Sad to see Benz just auctioned it off.

What Blondie was pointing out as the exhaust @ 6:09, was actually the fuel injection tube which was fed air through the vent screen in the hood. Uhlenhaut eventually had exterior mufflers put on the car - very ugly to look at. The $100M to $300M value figures are completely speculative, and it is essentially one of a kind, so until someone bids and wins, the value will never be known. Several years back I read that Rolls Royce estimated the "if it sold value" of the first Silver Ghost made at $75 M or more, but again, you can't say with any real accuracy what it is worth.

Yes, magnesium is highly flammable, and the body of a famously wrecked 300SLR (roadster) actually burned, when the vehicles' fuel tank exploded after the wreck, (which occurred during a race in 1955).

The race SLR's were made of Electron, which is a magnesium alloy. As Mustafa said, one of them basically flew into the crowd at the 1955 Le Mans race, killing 85(!) spectators along the way. The car immediately caught fire, which only intensified when first helpers tried to douse the flames with water. This crash was the reason why Mercedes quit racing until the late 80's.

Mercedes made some really good engines for German WW2 fighters, engineering advances in war time was much faster than it’s in Formula 1 nowadays, as everyone was fighting for their bare lives and survival. I guess they had a solid know how. The British were unable to capitalize as much on that, though Rolls-Royce is still a top company in turbines.

I mean, Rolls Royce made the Merlin engine that went to be used in two of the most famous fighters of the war, the Mustang and Spitfire, that engine was direct competition to the Mercedes DB-601/605 of the 109s, too bad those didnt found their way into cars like the Merlin did on some monsters... They did made a special variant of the the DB-603 for the Mercedes T80 but unfortunately the project was canceled due to the war...

What the fuck are you talking "...along with the 720S"? 🤣🤣 Thank you, you made may day! Honestly: Are you fucking crazy, to compare a boring piece of McLaren crap to such an absolutely legendary masterpiece, which is part of automotive history from the 1950'??? The Uhlenhaut 300 SLR isn't just the most expensive car in the world, it's still one of the most impressive to drive and looks way better than any crappy modern "super- or even hypercar"! A McLaren 720 S is just the usual McLaren crap vehicle, which all have the same boring 4 liter biturbo V8 engine and the same boring turbo sound like any other McLaren model. McLaren always makes the same car again and again and calls it a "new model"🤣. The 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe is the road version from an absolutely legendary 1955 race car, which won EVERY race it competed, whereas the 720 S is just another boring "supercar" crap vehicle from McLaren, without any race victory fame. Its's just one of MANY socalled "supercars" from today. Therefore the totally unreliable and overrated 720 S is just a totally irrelevant car compared to the unique and legendary 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe.
