As a first-time reader of the series (when I was a teenager), I definitely thought Sirius was the coolest Marauder. 15+ years later, though, as an adult who now works in education, Remus is 1000% the coolest Marauder. The fact that he can continue to be an empathetic, effective, and thoughtful teacher-both in classroom lessons and life lessons-while also suffering from a chronic health condition AND institutional discrimination makes me admire him more deeply.

Ben! Linguistics student here for the part at 19:56 where you talk about not pronouncing the g in “background.” So the /k/ sound and the /g/ sounds are very very similar; they’re both velar plosives (meaning they’re produced in the same spot towards the velum at the back of the mouth, and they’re made by stopping airflow and then releasing it). The only difference between them is that /k/ is voiceless (meaning the vocal folds do not vibrate when we make this sound) and /g/ is voiced (meaning the vocal folds DO vibrate when we make this sound). And it is very common when you have similar sounds near one another for certain processes to happen so a word is easier to produce (especially in quick, everyday speech rather than slow, careful speech), and in this case you have the process of elision (sound deletion) happening because it’s easier for us to delete one sound than to make two extremely similar sounds back to back. You can also see this in a word like “cupboard” where the p would historically have been pronounced as well but at this point has been deleted in favor of just making the sound of the b.

Sirius or Remus? Remus hands down! He is the one who gives Harry the best advice, tells him to control his temper, teaches him important spells like Expecto Patronum and tells him about his father. Sirius on the other hand spend most of book 5 telling Harry to be a reckless idiot.

Hey Ben and J. There is something about Snape's relationship with Dumbledore that always felt a bit off for me. Dumbledore trusts Snape without hesitation, but that doesn't work the other way around. Snape more than once questions Dumbledore's decisions. He does end up following all the orders from Dumbledore and helps Harry alot, but he doesn't seem to want to. However, I think the book does refer to bottles in deathly hallows, after the gringotts break in and they are recovering by the lake. I believe that they sell bottles of pumpkin juice on the trolley on the Hogwarts express from the descriptions we’ve been given: We know that there is iced/chilled pumpkin juice on the Hogwarts express because Harry tells us. When you go to Universal Studios, they also sell pumpkin juice and bottles there as well. I think it’s probably safe to assume they do come in bottles AND on tap.

When Harry breaks his arm in Chamber of Secrets and has has to regrow his bones so is in the hospital it refers to his friends bringing him "cakes, sweets and bottles of pumpkin juice." They also have bottles of pumpkin juice at the party in the common room after Harry finished the first task in Goblet of Fire. But usually it is referred to as being served iced from a pitcher and poured into their goblets, or just not mentioned (e.g you can get pumpkin juice from the trolley witch on the train, but it doesn't specify if it is bottles or poured from a pitcher). Though apparently the Sirius one it is referred to as taking him a flask of pumpkin juice, so sealed up like "Moody" sipping from his little flask of polyjuice potion all year.
