Something I never got while watching Crimes of Grindelwald... Why didn't Jacob and Queenie just... move the Europe? Where Muggle/Witch marriage is... totally legal? His Bakery? Magic it into a box. Passports? Newt found a way around that. Family? We don't know Jacob's, and Tina could probably visit in between missions. This problem literally existed ONLY to turn Queenie to Grindey-wald's side...

Could possible that non magical history like the world wars might have played a part in that. We know that the wizard world was very hit and miss on what they should do during WWII and it's likely that in that time many wizards ESPECIALLY squibs and muggleborns would've been at a big risk so it's possible the American ministry would have restricted travel of wizards to Europe at the time, we don't know this for certain but, it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch when you consider how overly protective the wizarding world can be. I'd actually love to know more about how each country in the wizarding world dealt with large scale history happening because I find it hard to believe that wizards in Germany, Japan or other places wouldn't have been influenced the same as muggles in our own world were as it would be a scenario probably ripe with purists. -shrug- though that's probably a theory in of itself

Besides, when Grindelwald showed his gathering the vision of WWll, Jacob's reaction and saying "another World War" implies that it hasn't even started yet, so muggle travel at least shouldn't be affected...

i mean it kinda already happened? in the fantastic beasts book (not the screenplay the one newt wrote) its said that mooncalfs will avoid contact with muggles at all costs, and obviously jacob feeds them in newts case. problem with that is that obviously newt wouldve said something so im not entirely sure, but he wrote the book after the events of the movies, so maybe he didnt know that mooncalfs avoid muggles yet.

I think that Muggles with ties to the magical world can notice magic. Look at Hermione's parents they're muggles but they can see magical things because they know what to look for. Or once they're past the magical boundaries they can see it. Take the fourth book where Mr.Robsion can notice magical things and keeps having to get memory charms placed on him.

I was thinking the same thing. The Grangers got into diagon alley meaning they could see the leaky cauldron, and I think there was a muggleborn kid at the quidditch world cup with his parents. Muggles seem to be able to see magical things if they are aware of them

The McGonagall gold chain just made me think of something. In the books, it’s mentioned McGonagall was the one who wrote to the Ministry and negotiated to get Hermione a time turner. We also know all that time stuff is part of the Department of Mysteries, and anyone outside of that department, even other people at the ministry, know nothing or at least a very limited amount, about the Department and what goes on. Why was McGonagall of all people able to pull some strings? Well if she had a broadly secret (only a select few outside of the department of mysteries would even know, Dumbledore being one) history of time travel, possibly is aid of Dumbledore and taking down Grindelwald, conceivably she would totally be someone who could pull some strings with the Department of Mysteries. In fact she would be one of the very few able to do so, or they could even conceivably trust.

This might explain why the memory charm conveniently wore off. Edit because what I wrote seems to be unclear: yes, I’ve seen the movies, yes I know the in movie explanation. But, I’ve always found it odd how if the potion only removes bad memories, why Kowalski seemed to have forgotten everything at the end of FBAWTFT, only remembering it in his subconscious. Secondly, if seeing Queenie was the sole reason his memories came back fully, why when she entered the bakery? You could argue that during the rain scene his mind was being consistently blanked, I suppose. Still, the whole “only bad memories” seems too convenient. Newt even explains that Kowalski would lose all memory of magic, and I assume the American version of the ministry (I forget what it was called) would keep tabs on him due to the fact that they seem hyper concerned with keeping knowledge of magic hidden. Edit edit: even if the movie is right it at least lends support to him being a Squib since, as said in the video, Squibs have an affinity to magical creatures, if all of Kowalski’s memories were good, including the one with the rhino-esque one (I can’t spell the name,) as proven by the pastry version of it, he must either have a strange idea of good memories, or, the potion didn’t fully work on him. Or, as said previously, he has an affinity for these creatures.

alic seprin I definitely recommend watching the second movie for more details. And while a Legilimens can plant false memories or visions (like Voldemort did with Harry), ones that don’t naturally exist within the mind, they have to be extremely powerful. Going of Voldemort isn’t a great idea, since he was the most powerful one in the world, according to Snape. My thought process for this since I finished the first movie has always been that I think Jacob enjoyed his experience overall so most of the memories would be retained; it takes away bad memories. Seeing destruction and havoc is scary for people, especially if they don’t understand the cause and have no context. If I went outside my door and someone tackled me to the ground, I’d be freaked out. But if I knew it was because someone was trying to assassinate me and by tackling me they took me out of the sight of the other person, I’d be happy they helped me; context is important. Jacob knew why the weird things were happening and knew his friends were with him. He had someone he was falling in love with. And that tends to make you feel better about a situation, no matter how bad it is. It’s like as a kid, I felt things could never get too bad if my dad was with me, because he’d handle whatever happened. So I can see the premise of the potion working on other people because it’s so out of context and scary. But to him, it’s less bad and more scary but thrilling, and most of it was more... wondrous, awe-inspiring, and fun. Seeing the amazing creatures and witnessing magic, eating really good magical food, that’s not all bad. So he’d have at least some memory. I figured they could fudge it either way, say the food in his pastry shop was inspired by subconscious memories, or that he remembers those parts for real, because they were good. My guess was they were waiting to see if he was a fan Favorite or not. And if people didn’t like him, he’d not remember or come back. Smart move, really.

When his sister Ariana died. he may have tried to use the Sorcerer's stone to give her Obscurial her body back... but instead, it created a NEW body entirely... Dumbledore was too grieved of his failure, to revive his sister, and gave the baby up, that baby then made it to America. That's how he can be a 'brother' to Dumbledore without Albus knowing he carries the line of the Dumbledores. He is basically a magical clone of the late Ariana. Since he is a clone of a girl that was older than 11 at the time of his creation, that may explain why: 1: He wasn't written into the School's record book... and 2: He has no family. Technically his genetic profile is older than 11 at the time of his birth so he wouldn't receive a letter. Also, it could be that he isn't in fact human... But a new type of magical subspecies and I haven't seen any goblins at Hogwart or Ivermony

We know for sure that his father was Polish, because his surname - Kowalski (Blacksmith) is the most popular surname here and because of "pączki". Pączki are traditional polish type of pastry filled with raspberry or rose marmalade. Around the time when Jacob was born, Polish people starts emigrate to USA (especially military families and lonely guys at reproductive age) and peak of Polish emigration to the USA was between I and II world war or the very beginning of the II world war. In Chicago to this day is the biggest polish diaspora in the world I think.

The question that I want to know is, can 2 muggle parents give birth to a squib? They would essentially be a muggle born, but with no magical powers. The difference would be that they aren’t affected by anti-muggle spells and can see things that other people can’t. Pretty sure that violates what we know about the magical world. Both muggle parents would have to be the descendants of squibs themselves but so far removed that they had no knowledge of magic. Like Hermione's parents. With this squib ancestor and all knowledge of magic is so far back in the bloodline that no one recognizes it. Therefore for all of the intervening Generations exactly what you're talkin about must happen where they carry some remnant of the magical gene but only when paired with someone else who also carries some shredded leftover of the magic gene can a magical child be born. All of those intervening Generations past the third generation of squib descendants would still be considered muggles. Weather Jacob is a squib or not is totally irrelevant if he marries Queen and they have a child. The child would be considered Half-Blood just like Harry.

Here is a ridiculous what if. What if there are adults who have the magical gene but it was never activated in life so they would be considered squibs or muggles. But then something later in their adulthood happens to then activates that gene and suddenly in later life starts showing magical abilities instead of childhood. There's an alternative explanation though, okay so we know Jacob came to America with his parents but was born in Poland, being born in Poland he should have joined either Durmstrang or Koldovstoretz if he was magical, but since he came to America he should join Ilvermorny, how are the students for both these schools selected? And are they as perfect as Hogwarts? If not, maybe Durmstrang's/Koldovstoretz's and Ilvermorny's selection process got confused and he never received an invitation to join any of the schools because each school assumed he was going to attend the other, it could be possible that he is magical but fell in between the cracks. But I hear you, "wouldn't he have realized he was magical"? I mean, Harry made a glass disappear and didn't realize he was a wizard in fact he told Hagrid that he couldn't be a wizard days after. Maybe when he grew up he just attributed any event he may have accidentally caused to flights of a child's imagination and forgot all about it, maybe with the stress and horror of a war he caused some more events but with the confusion that it was he didn't even see them.

I think that the portion about muggles only seeing old ruins only applies to muggles who are unaware of the wizarding world. Because if a muggle-born student needed to be picked up or something by their muggle parents, the muggle parents would need to see the castle. So I think the spell gets lifted on any muggle that finds out about the wizarding world.

Squibs are non-magical by definition, they have no access to magic. Descendants of squibs would be the children of non-magical parents, making them normal muggles and not squibs. But... I have a vague memory of reading in one of the HP books that a muggle borns family visited Hogwarts sometime. I think the key is with muggles that they don’t see it on their own, but if being brought somewhere magical, they can see it as it somehow makes the anti-muggle spells ineffective. Just look at Hermione’s parents visiting Diagon Alley for example, they’re both muggles and by all means shouldn’t be able to go to Diagon Alley, or platform 9 3/4 for that matter, which I think even Petunia visited once? And it also seems unknown whether squibs can or can not see all magic creatures, as mentioned in Order of the Phoenix when Arabella Figg is questioned about the dementors and the Wizwengamot didn’t know that squibs could see dementors. I do believe that magical creatures are all around in the series, only muggles can not see them on their own, but may be able to see them if a wizard has introduced it to them so they’re aware of the magical world’s existence. Jacob was made aware of the existence of magic and magical creatures, and became more and more open minded to it. If he was indeed a squib I’d be surprised tbh as squibs seem to be aware of the existence of magic since one or both parents are magic, and if going back to Arabella Figg or Mr Filch it’s quite clear that they’re very aware of magic, but just unable to perform any of their own

I'm for the Squib theory, I was feeling that even in the first movie. As for everyone calling him a Muggle, in a way for the the wizarding world, it's almost right, since Squibs are looked down upon in a similar fashion or even worse as they are a stain on Pure households. While I don't know for sure, I always thought maybe Jacob came from a family where neither parent really wanted him much, hence why he spent so much time with his Grandmother and learned all her recipes and such. It would make even more sense if she was basically his 'replacement mom' if say, his Magical mother, who had a love afair with a muggle, found out her baby was non-magic and totally couldn't keep him in her world... so she'd send him to the father, who'd send him to Grandma in America. just a thought.

I'm watching this video just now in 2022, so the trailer for the next fantastic beast had just came out. in the trailer we see Jacob INSIDE of Hogwarts meaning that he can see the castle. since muggles cannot see the castle at all and only see danger signs it makes total sense that he is a squib. Also because of this being shown in the trailer and basically proving that he is a squib, it now makes even more sense that he could be related to Hufflepuff since he could have that magically ancestry.

No. It would be a literary travesty for Jacob to be anything other than a muggle - it's the whole point of his character, and why we the audience relate to him. Muggles can't see Hogwarts *from the outside* - all they see is a ruin and a danger sign, so they don't enter for fear of the danger. There is no indication that a muggle couldn't see Hogwarts from inside, or where the boundary line is. Presumably it encompases a good deal of the grounds, such as the Whomping Willow - can't have muggles seeing a fully animate tree! I assume it's sort of like the protection spell Hermione and Harry cast in Deathly Hallows to make their campsite invisible - as long as you're outside the boundary line, you can't see it, but it's perfectly visible from the inside. Likewise, there are different kinds of magical creatures. Some of them, like dementors, are "spirits" and can't be seen by muggles. But others are fully flesh and blood, like hippogryphs and centaurs, and muggles would be able to see them if they chose to reveal themselves, since they are fully physical creatures. That's why there are many examples in JKR's writings of muggle legends and mythology that describe things that actually exist in the wizarding world. How else would muggles know about them and include them in folklore if they couldn't have ever seen them? Muggles claim to see ghosts quite frequently, and the Loch Ness Monster, and many other things. If muggles couldn't see any of this stuff, then why did they have to make memory-erasing rain fall all over New York City in the previous movie? Seriously, don't you remember what happened only one movie ago? Jacob is not a squib. And he's not a descendant of Helga Hufflepuff, either. He's just a normal guy. That's why we love him.

I dunno, Snape was headmaster, so he may have kept paying him as a kitchen elf on the dl. Voldemort wasn't likely to pay much attention to 1 galleon a month. Aberforth wouldn't have had to pay him because he's asking Dobby to help Harry, which Dobby is happy to do for free. I strongly doubt Dobby demanded payment for any of the stuff we see him do in the Deathly Hallows. As for how quickly Aberforth called him, all he really has to do is say the elf's name and he'll just appear, like Harry did in Half-Blood Prince with Dobby and Kreacher. They were anywhere in the castle, it isn't like they could have physically *heard* him or anything, so calling an elf by his name seems to be part of their magic. I don't see why it wouldn't have worked for Aberforth all the way in Hogsmeade after the secret tunnel had been established and Dumbledore's Army got big enough that it wouldn't be practical for all of the kids to come barrelling through his sister's portrait, rather than just one elf with everybody's dinner orders. He would have become acquainted with Dobby very quickly, just as quickly discovered that Dobby was obsessed with Harry and hated his old masters the Malfoys, and when Harry asked for help, would've known to send Dobby.

FYI Sunday, February 24th, on SYFY: Just saw a brief clip during the commercials where Dan Fogle (the actor that portrays Jacob K) talks about one of his favorite scenes in Chamber of Secrets (the show that was playing at the time) where Harry is freed from his room when the bars on his bedroom window are pulled away by the flying car. It all makes perfect sense! Jacob doesn’t have any magical powers but he can definitely see magical things and creatures. He’s obviously a Squib!

Don't forget the fact that even after being Obliviated, he still had memories/impressions of all the magical creatures he met in the first movie, thus why he made his pastries in their likeness, and the look on his face seeing Queenie again thinking he had seen her before yet couldn't quite pinpoint where, which would show that as a Squib, he has some resistance to certain magical charms just as many Witches and Wizards do. Just saying.
