This. Map can still track people inside of the castle even if the map is elsewhere outside it. When you search for a person you need to kill, and you know of an artifact that tracks the people within castle grounds, you might get the idea to try and assault Hogwarts to get to this person. Leaving the map within the castle leaves you with no other option that hunt for them elsewhere. Am I making sense?
@maryvallas772 Жыл бұрын
@Владислав Григорьев I follow your thinking, but I don't think so. We know Filch confiscated it during their 7th year at Hogwarts, but he didn't know what it was. He just felt it was suspicious. My head-canon: Hogwart has some sort of monitoring system, that locates people inside and idetifies them. That way castle "knows" what is happening inside, for instance, who is allowed to give and take points from houses. Notice that nobody had to cast a spell to do it. Four founders created this system but like many things, they leaved this as a secret. And marauder's map was just very cleverly crafted interface that could display data from that system. Still advanced magic but not impossible for group of clever young hackers...imean wizards.

Since Dumbledore knew about Remus (Padfoot, Wormtail, Prongs and Moony) he probably helped them with the creation of the map (to keep students safe if Remus should not get to the hut in time) - so he linked the map to the sorting-hat: hence it knows every student and the teaches/staff/ghosts etc is already registered as staff- hence the hat knows. @AnoukhHellstream3 жыл бұрын
That's what i think. The marauders just sneaked into the tower and ripped off a page off the book as it was magical. And made a map with the magical quill in there.

If the book and quill can detect and evaluate every newborn in UK, it seems plausible for a page to have limited range - it might be just barely to cover Hogwarts, which might be the actual reason why it is not shown where the secret passages lead to. I mean BC jr. tampered with GoF, so it is not out of question for Marauders to have tampered with single page, even if the book as a whole is very powerful. Screwing around with it shouldn't be as difficult - especially since they are not forcing it to do anything that much out of its original purpose - locating people and recording names. there are just two layers on top of that - one makes the page display the information and the other to hide it from anybody that does not speak the password... Also for the most part I thought that it was hint of sentience from the book that adressed snape - My mental image was that it would be rather elementary intelligence, kinda child-like hence liking the Marauders since they had fun with it, going on various adventures and stuff, but that thing it said to Snape (in book) seems far too specific and in character for the four, so I might be wrong about this one, unless it just spend a lot of time with them, being able to imagine what they would say... or they inserted bit of themselves into it, not really horcrux levels, but the kind of energy or "spirit" that keeps Peeves running...

I've heard a theory about how they got all the names down is that they managed to make a potion which the poured on a well used part of the castle, like the entrance to the great hall. they made the same potion and poured that on the map. So, whenever someone walks into the great hall, their name of preference at that time is recorded and put on the map. This way if someone changes their name for any reason, the next time they walk into the great hall, their name will change on the map. In terms of the whole "how did Fred and George not see Peter Pettigrew in their brother's bed", I think only the marauders (and people who know they animagus) can see other marauders when they are in animagus form. I think because Harry is James's blood, the map gives him ability to see this also. One last thing. I think the only way Filch got the map is because the marauders wanted him to. At the end of their 7th year they decided to "accidentally" let Filch see them using the map with everyone's names on it, and then act surprised, lock the map and "accidentally" leave it as they flee (or something similar). Meaning that whether or not he knows about the fact that it can track everyone in the castle is irrelevant, because Filch knows this was used by the marauders, and therefore is classed as 'highly dangerous' in his office. The marauder's did this because they wanted some other troublemakers to find it, just like Fred and George. And what better place to put it than the place that troublemakers would be in often (due to detention, pranks, etc.) and is guarded by someone who can't do magic (therefore has no magical locks on anything). Filch's office. edit: just watched the rest of the video and realised his theory for the last thing is the same as mine but I'm just going to leave it here anyway.

@@DutchDread Oh! that is an ancient magical concept, called Tagmentum of the House (the guardian spirit of the house). Kind of a midbrain thingy. The idea is that if sentient beings think and feel inside a building, and the building is magically prepared, than those activities leave an imprint in the magic, and the building slowly becomes self aware. Kind of a soft mixture of all the people who was emotionally connected to the building. Also, the stronger your attachment to the building, the stronger your affiliation to the "spirit of the house". That would also explain the connection of the marauders to the castle. It was more likely to do their bidding, aiding them, because they were more "one with it". It also explains the twins, Harry and Voldemort, because they were all very strongly connected to the castle, so they were more likely to be aided by the castle itself. From that point of view the Room of Requirement is a direct manifestation of that concept. It is also true that it helps to those who actually AT HOME in the castle. If they love the place, it loves them back.

The map was part of each of the 4 creators: Wormtail, James Potter, Sirius Black, and Remus Lupin. Compare that to the paintings in Dumbledore's office of the former headmasters. They still have the essence of the person they embody as well (this is apparent when the painting of Dumbledore talks to Snape in the Deathly Hallows about the sword).
@scottr23143 жыл бұрын
There is another possibility for how the map knows everyone's name. The sorting hat use legilimency to essentially read the minds of students to figure out which house they would serve best in, What if James. Surius, Peter and Lupin enchanted the Marauders Map with a legilimency spell in the same way the 4 Hogwarts founders use the same spell on the sorting hat? Maybe it's more advanced than the sorting because it shows the location of everyone in the castle but thee function seems to be very similar.

What you say about Squibs in Hogwarts is very true. They're essentially just disabled magic people : they can't do everything a Wizard can but they're still part of the Wizarding Community, and should go to school to learn about it. My middle school had a partnership with the city Institute for Deaf students, so there was A) a class of deaf people, and B) some deaf people in the classes mixed with non-deaf people. I don't see why Squibs couldn't do the same thing, attend lessons they don't need magic for with magic kids (history of magic etc), and have their own classes adapted to their abilities (like the theory of spells, knowledge about defense against the dark arts etc)

I've never given much thought to squibs, but what you're saying makes complete sense. They could be allowed into schools like Hogwarts, and given the chance to study magical theory, history, and other aspects of magical learning that don't require any actual magic being used in order to study. Then, after graduation, they could choose to continue living within the wizarding world, or live amongst muggles. Incidentally, I too have a disability. I've been totally blind since birth. Sometimes I've wondered what would happen if a child was born to wizard parents, but had some form of physical disability, such as blindness, deafness, difficulties controlling motor functions etc. Would they be accepted into a wizarding school? Would they have any magic at all? I don't suppose these are questions to which we'll ever have answers.

I like the theory that the names on the map are sourced from the Book and Quill. The biggest question I have is, what is the range of the Book and Quill? Does it cover the entire world? What would happen if Hogwarts and Ilvermorny decided to have a cross-Atlantic Quidditch match? Would the Ilvermorny staff and students show up on the map? What if a Japanese wizard shows up? I don't remember if we see Fleur or Krum or any other visiting students on the map in Goblet.

There is a possibility they might've asked him for advice indirectly at some point, but I personally doubt that he helped directly or even knew that this map existed, seeing as that Dumbledore had absolutely no idea when Barty Crouch Jr mentioned it in Goblet of Fire

This seems like the easier answer. The map's outline of Hogwarts is created using words, I would think they had to mark all the walls of the school when drawing out the map and so the spells in the walls detect who is nearby.
@windhelmguard52953 жыл бұрын
it makes a lot of sense for the map to be specifically linked to the magical energies unique to hogwarts, which is also why the room of requirement can not be detected, the room of requirement is hidden by the castles magic and thus the marauders map, which runs on the castles magic, can not overcome that protection.

what if the map was made from a torn out page of the actual book? like they found the room, snuck in and stole a page. then it would make sense that the map knows the names. it is litterally the paper that knows the names. the map enchantment is just added on top of it to display them

@@TheScarvig this was my exact headcannon as soon as he said that the tower the book and quill are kept in was a place students weren't allowed to enter. obviously the marauders would find a way in and try to figure out how the book worked, and the way that's least likely to get them caught is to steal a page and work on it in private.

The fact that the map can actually spot who is where has probably to do with the mark young wizards and witches have until they turn 17, that the map still know generations later after you lost this 'mark' might have something to do with it having some sort of memory, since it said to snape to keep his long nose out of stuff that isn't his business. The map has memory and knowledge stored from its creators most likely and after started to store some of its own. * The thing with the Ministry of magic not detecting Dobby at Dursleys in book/film 3 is because he's an elf, they have a different sort of magic, its mentioned in book 2 I think it was or maybe later but I know it's mentioned. As for the map not detecting some creatures like elfs kind of seems logical, otherwise there would be a lot of them showing up on the map at Hogwarts since the whole kitchen is full of them preparing food for all the teachers and students. *note. I wrote the above before I even watched the whole clip 😅and I still believe that the map has some sort of 'mind' of its own since all magic leaves some sort of imprint from the one/the ones that casted the spell. all that beeing said, I'm a huge HP fan and loved that this video showed up on my 'home page' very fun to watch and to read all other comments 😄🦑🦑
