I like this theory, but I also have another. What do you get when you combine the characteristics of a lion, an eagle, a serpent, and a badger? I think you get something very like a dragon in appearance. From the eagle you get the wings. From the lion the claws, fangs, and strength. From the serpent the reptillian nature, the long tail and the long neck, and from the badger you get the ferocity, strength, and its love of living in caves. Just a random thought I had.

With his little monologue at the beginning about still waiting for the Hogwarts' letter even years later (so you can learn some responsability), it's got me thinking about a potential fanfic where the invitation letter to Hogwarts comes at the end of their studies for muggleborns. So like it follows a normal non magical person, they've gone through the classical education system (let's keep it set in the UK), they did highschool and probably some kind of post-grad study. They've graduated from that too and now they're looking for a job when one early summer afternoon an owl flies in the open window, drops a letter then flies straight back out. And the letter is like "Greetings! Magic is real and you have it. We formally invite you to sign up to Hogwarts School of Whitchcraft and Wizardry. (blady bla) Policy is that we let muggleborns finish their studies before offering them this choice. We get that this is a big decision, we'll send you an owl in a week to retrieve your answer (we use owls to carry our mail, don't overthink it, have your letter ready). Because of the Statute of Secrecy, you may not talk to anyone about this and if you choose not to learn magic, a Ministry deleguate will come to erase your memory and knowledge of the existence of magic and you will be considered a muggle...." And then the Hogwarts experience is somewhat more like college and there is a much different reaction to all the magical aspects. It seems like lots of fun, it probably already exists somewhere (I hope).

so there's this idea that Hogwarts is actually built like a maze for the purpose of warding off invaders because when the school was built, the magical community is very fragmented and is constantly at war with the muggles. The staircases change all the time to confuse invaders, the Gryffindor common room entrance is a hole you have to crawl through to slow down and make enemies vulnerable to attacks, Hufflepuff common room door attack you if don't have the correct password, etc. On top of that, the castle sits with its back to the lake and surrounded by mountains, it's a very easily defensible position against an army, as we have seen in the battle of Hogwarts
@gingersnap854311 ай бұрын
Well the changing staircases aren’t book canon, but if you’re going off of movie canon this is great! "Never tickle a sleeping dragon" 🤣 fits perfectly to Griffindor, because all of them are ALWAYS inviting dangers into their lives 😅 ("the land of the brave is a true Griffindor's place"). This is my head canon: that since bravery is one of the most specific trait of a Griffindor, Godric knew they would need his sword to save them from trouble(s) so he hid the sword in his hat because he knew it would become handy one day (or constantly) to all the Griffindors 😂

Interesting, the tidbit about the Scottish dragon having purple eyes, the first thing I think of being distinctly purple in the books is Albus himself, being described in purple robes often.

I think it's too far to take this -- Hogwarts being a dragon, that is -- literally. However, I believe that it is definitely valid to take it in a metaphorical sense. "Never tickle a sleeping dragon" -- yes, I agree, it's somewhat of a warning; don't attack Hogwarts, don't mess with Hogwarts, else Hogwarts will respond with the vengeance and power of a dragon awoken from its sleep. Also, thinking back to the whole "Caput Draconis" debacle, you could easily say that Gryffindor is the head of the dragon -- the part that attacks, and leads the fight. It's a message, saying that Gryffindors will be the first to retaliate and fight, and that there lies the flames and maw; there lies Hogwarts' strongest weapon.

Odd bit I found reading the series again: the Ollivander family has been making and selling wands to wizards for twice as long as Hogwarts has existed. Hogwarts was founded in the 10th century(900s). The Ollivanders have been selling wands since 382 BC.

Don’t agree myself- Then again, I’ve always had a headcannon for how the motto came to be… (Helga and Rowena and sitting discussing things, while salazar and Goodrick are off messing about. Rowena is bent over her parchment, writing) Rowena: so, I think the school needs a motto, what do you think? (Helga hears godric giggling and turns around, to see godric about to tickle a dragon sleeping peacefully nearby. Helga: NEVER TICKLE A SLEEPING DRAGON, GODRIC! Rowena: (not seeing what happned) yeah, that works. Maybe we should translate it into Latin, though… and chr out the same. Yes, “never ticks a sleeping dragon” is great advice!

Nice theory but I think something different- Maybe there was indeed a Dragon where the school is now located, which the founders defeated together after a fierce battle. Which would explain why to give warning about Dragons.

So the founders thought it would be easier to transfigure a massive dangerous dragon into a school building to fill kids with…than just build a school building? Logic like that would explain why some people haven’t got their Hogwarts letters yet 😂. Sometimes it is just quirky mottos and passwords.
@Lordpooz0911 ай бұрын
I very recently saw a very similar theory by someone else (someone I'm not familiar with & haven't been able to refind the video) talking about the castle being a living sentient being. Only in their version it was a 5th founder who could transform like an animagus except they became a castle instead of an animal 🤷♂️.

Rereading the books and something stood out to me . At the beginning of book 6 belatrix and narsissa travel to meet Snape to ask him to help Draco . During this conversation Snape reveals that his information lead to the death of Amelia Bones . Now this moment in the books is suppose to serve as an AHA so Snape is evil after all and increases tension in the book as we the reader “Know” that he is evil . However in book 7 it’s revealed that he was loyal to Dumbledoor all along and following his orders . Does this not imply that in turn Dumbledoor practically gave up Bones on a golden platter to Voldemort? That he told Snape to give information that he very well knew would lead to her death . You could argue the same for the battle of the seven potters but at least then it was all people sworn to fight against Voldemort , people that would have agreed to the plan had they known of it . Bones was not part of the order , while she was sympathetic to Harry and opposed Voldemort she was not part of the order .

Got to admit, I was super skeptical but your reasoning and logic are solid as rock. Very very interesting. If I still had any interest in hearing J.K Rowling's thought on anything I'd be interested to see if this is true. At this point I think the lore is in better hands with the fans so I say we make this cannon! 😂

I like the theory but have a small one of my own. Maybe the locals developed near where hogwarts was founded saw dangers that they attributed to a dragon but was actually just the founders and later years the students doing magic. The locals create the lore of a dragon, that the founders then use to create the motto.

Using an existing ruin might have been easier than building from scratch, just a thought.
What if James Potter got the sword of Gryffindor when Voldemort attacked them? He faced the darkest wizard of all time without a wand to buy time for his family, if that isn’t an act of true bravery idk what is. He’d definitely die but he could wound Voldemort who 100% would not be ready for that.
@kacpikachu595111 ай бұрын
Idk if that would be an actual option; iirc, Voldemort ambushed the Potters that night, meaning that even if the sword appeared, James likely wouldn’t have been able to get it before he was killed. That being said, if I read that in a good enough fan fiction, I doubt I’d question it, especially if it resulted in an interesting enough departure from the original story.
@anvos65811 ай бұрын
Its basically the you brought a knife to a gun fight problem, where unless the sword can absorb the death curse, he's dead before he can do anything, since the death curse has more stopping power than a bullet.
