Well Lupin left the map on his desk open, just like in the case of Moody being able to use the map even though he'd be an unsavory character who doesn't know how to operate it, I feel the contents of the map are based on who opened the map, not who'd currently using it. Thus because Lupin opened the map it's able to see the other marauders, perhaps it's even an additional passphrase which enabled the viewing of the other marauders, which lupin invoked because it would allow him to see Sirius.

@DreadKyller Жыл бұрын
Because a lot of people bring up Harry seeing Pettigrew on the map as a counter to only the Marauders being able to see the Marauders, while this is the case in the movies, this scene plays out very differently in the books. In the books it's revealed that Lupin, Sirius, James and Remus are the Marauders, and that Lupin found them in the shack by seeing Pettigrew on the map, going further on to explain that he knows how the map works because he helped create it. In the movies it's never actually revealed who the Marauders are, the movie creates a different way to give Lupin the revelation that Pettigrew is alive, by having Harry tell him. Thus in the movies they combined two scenes, the scene where Harry gets caught with the map, and the scene where Lupin finds out about Pettigrew, into the same scene. In the books Harry is caught with the map after an incident in Hogsmeade, the scene where Harry is messing with Malfoy while using the cloak, in the books the cloak is pulled partway off him revealing his floating head, which Malfoy immediately goes to report. Harry rushes to get back to the school via the secret passage to cover himself, in a rush he leaves the cloak in the passage and leaves with the map where it's almost immediately found by Snape. Snape tries to force the map open, and when he's presented with the named Mooney Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs, as well as very unique insults the Marauders used to say to him, he knew who was behind the map, and went to Lupin with Harry. In the books Harry never sees Pettigrew on the map.

I think the map is tied to Hogwart's main entrance. In Prisoner of Azkaban, Flitwich trains the front oaken door to recognize Sirius in order to not grant him access into the castle. Sometimes I think it’s simpler than a complex series of traits that you value. Sometimes it’s the people you look up to, and the legacies that you value. I don’t know exactly why Snape values Slytherin over Gryffindor, but he believed that Slytherin was the place to be, and so the hat listened. Similarly, Peter saw James, Sirius, and Lupin who all wanted to be in Gryffindor, and wanted to be as well, so the hat obliged and put him in Gryffindor. The map not showing the Mauraders except to other Mauraders is an interesting theory but has one major flaw in it. In Prisoner of Azkaban Snape only knows where to go to find Lupin because he saw Lupins name on the map going down the passage to the shreaking shack. Shapes not Maurader and is a known enemy of the Mauraders so if there was anyone they would have wanted to have themselves hidden from it would have been him. Just a theory, but what if the Marauders simply gave the map to younger students when they graduated, who then lost it to Filch. Idk, seems more likely to me than them just giving it to Filch or getting caught.

Messrs is the abbreviation for the French version of "misters." It also leans into the proper pronunciation of Voldemort.
@markhamstra1083 Жыл бұрын
While its origins are in French, “Messrs.” is also now simply the plural of “Mr.” In English - i.e. “mister” and “misters”. No need to involve the French at all at this point.

If you really think about it, Peter Petigrew mangaged the MOST mischief out of the 4 in the long run. He killed 12 muggles, framed one of his best friends for the murders, had his friend be sent to Azkaban, lived in hiding for years under the Order of the Phoenix's nose, orchestrated the kidnapping of Harry (during the TWT) and brought Voldemort back. I hate to say it... he's one sneaky Niffler! 😅

I subscribe more to the idea that it's an artifact of the school like the room of requirement, maybe even created by the room itself. And if anything its probably not a Griff item. They are too courage to stop and create a map, risking it all. It's slytherin in nature, answering they are up to no good. Maybe it was a ravenclaw item, knowledge without purpose, and it was on 100% of the time. Then our favorite 4 trouble makers added a lock to it. My favorite part of your video is how Fred and George figured it out. I assume the key was given with it by the room itself. I like yours much better
@DasVadderr Жыл бұрын
The map is basically like the "Bible" in the American Pie franchise. Maybe actively handing it down to the next generation of chaos-lovers was practiced more often than just from the twins to Harry. Maybe they were even told by older students that they have placed the map into Filch´s office and stealing it is part of the ceremony to become the next "marauders".

Whoooaa... follow-up question--what happens if you break your oath to the map, where you're NOT up to no good? Do you think the map also has been jinxed, like the jinx Hermione put on the DA signup paper, that would bind the user of the map to relatively-harmless mischief only? And what "punishment" do you think the Marauders would have deemed fitting for someone who abuses or misuses the map?
@meleardil Жыл бұрын

@@meleardil but Harry DID see Peter (as a rat). That's why he told Lupin that he saw someone (Peter Pettigrew) on the map who shouldn't be there because he knew him to be dead. Additionally, if what you say about human/animal form mattered then Peter was a rat up until Severus and Lupin forced him to change back to a human, so if the map didn't see them in animal form, Lupin wouldn't be able to see Peter and follow them to the Shaking Shack. Also Snape wasn't even able to use the map, so he wouldn't be able to see Lupin anyway, he physically followed Lupin to the Shaking Shack, he didn't use a map.

I think its also worth noting that the map has been confiscated by Filch more than once- and stolen back more than once. 1. In 1988, the map was stolen by Peeves from Filch. 2. The map had, by 1988, ended up in the possession of Mundungus Fletcher. The map was then stolen from him. 3. The Hogwarts Mystery player found the Marauder's Map in the Icy Corridor along with Scabbers- who was still Percy's. The Hogwarts Mystery player does not know what this is, and gives to Rakepick. 4. Rakepick told The Hogwarts Mystery player the secret way to accesses it. The wiki states, "The Hogwarts Mystery player planned to use the map, and talked about what they saw on the map. They mentioned a person moving so quickly that they couldn't read the person's name. After this mention, Rakepick took the map, saying that the person is the one who attacked Mundungus Fletcher and that keeping their name a secret is to protect Jacob's sibling." The person who attacked Mundungus was probably Peter Pettigrew. Weasley

I always assumed that the phrase wasn't a specific passcode, but that anything the map recognises as acceptable would work. But Fred and George "unlocked" the map using that specific phrase (perhaps when they were goofing around with each other) and assumed it was a specific lock and key, passing it down to Harry. I think if Harry just said anything along the lines of "I'm the son of James Potter" that would have been good enough too, and he'd of course get custom greeting lines from the Messers first :)

I've just finished reading the books, and I don't know if anyone else has thought of this before, but it recently occurred to me that there might be more depth to the Marauder’s Map than we think. I’m reminded of the conversation between Harry and Mr. Weasley, in which Mr. Weasley says, “Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain[.]” I argue that the Marauder’s Map could have thought for itself, perhaps, not as intelligently as the Diary of Tom Riddle, but maybe enough that it also should not have been so easily trusted. There are a few things I’d like to point out. 1. How did Filch know that this blank piece of parchment should be stored with other “dangerous” confiscations? 2. All the characters who used the Marauders map, ended up dying. (perhaps making their mischief truly “managed”) Now, I’ve only read through the books once, and I most definitely could be mistaken, I have just been wondering if anyone else had noticed this?

The map was completely wasted on Harry. In the 6th book he's apparently obsessed with finding out what Malfoy's up to but never bothers to go and check what Crabbe and Goyle are up to when he sees them hanging out in the 7th floor corridor for hours at a time. If he had he'd have realised sooner that they were using polyjuice potion and standing outside the room of requirement

The theory where only marauders can see eachother on the map is easily disproven by a small section from Chapter 19 of Prisoner of Azkaban: Snape was slightly breathless, but his face was full of suppressed triumph. "You're wondering, perhaps, how I knew you were here?" he said, his eyes glittering. "I've just been to your office, Lupin. You forgot to take your potion tonight, so I took a gobletful along. And very lucky I did... lucky for me, I mean. Lying on your desk was a certain map. One glance at it told me all I needed to know. I saw you running along this passageway and out of sight."

If the only people that could see the marauders on the map are other marauders, then how would Harry have seen Pettigrew? Unless I missed some information, that would imply Harry was a marauder, I would assume by way of inheritance through James? Which also implies Harry would be the only one of any of the kids able to see lupin or Pettigrew or Sirius.... unless I missed something, I'll just assume that's a loose end that never got situated
