Fred and George are such a delight in the books, they are goofing off but still manage to do so much good. I really like in the second book when Harry is suspected being the heir of slytherin, they act like his heralds "making way for the heir of slytherin" And it makes Harry feel better since the rest of the students know the Twins are always goofing, it kinda removes suspicion on Harry. And the books are just full of moments like that.

Fred and George are the type of jokers who really want everyone to relax and have a good time. They usually want their "victims" to laugh along. Do they sometimes go too far? Yes, but it normally with good intentions. In their mind, someone like Percy could use a good laugh to relax. It's only malicious when their target is particularly vile, like Umbridge.

I like to think the map was designed with a little of the marauders inside, and reacts to everyone differently. So when it detects Snape in Prisoner of Azkaban it insults him (because the Marauders hated Snape). But when it detected Fred and George, it told them how to solve it because it detected their mischievousness. I also like to think that Lily once found the Marauders map, and it started flirting with her.

Well Lupin left the map on his desk open, just like in the case of Moody being able to use the map even though he'd be an unsavory character who doesn't know how to operate it, I feel the contents of the map are based on who opened the map, not who'd currently using it. Thus because Lupin opened the map it's able to see the other marauders, perhaps it's even an additional passphrase which enabled the viewing of the other marauders, which lupin invoked because it would allow him to see Sirius.

Because a lot of people bring up Harry seeing Pettigrew on the map as a counter to only the Marauders being able to see the Marauders, while this is the case in the movies, this scene plays out very differently in the books. In the books it's revealed that Lupin, Sirius, James and Remus are the Marauders, and that Lupin found them in the shack by seeing Pettigrew on the map, going further on to explain that he knows how the map works because he helped create it. In the movies it's never actually revealed who the Marauders are, the movie creates a different way to give Lupin the revelation that Pettigrew is alive, by having Harry tell him. Thus in the movies they combined two scenes, the scene where Harry gets caught with the map, and the scene where Lupin finds out about Pettigrew, into the same scene. In the books Harry is caught with the map after an incident in Hogsmeade, the scene where Harry is messing with Malfoy while using the cloak, in the books the cloak is pulled partway off him revealing his floating head, which Malfoy immediately goes to report. Harry rushes to get back to the school via the secret passage to cover himself, in a rush he leaves the cloak in the passage and leaves with the map where it's almost immediately found by Snape. Snape tries to force the map open, and when he's presented with the named Mooney Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs, as well as very unique insults the Marauders used to say to him, he knew who was behind the map, and went to Lupin with Harry. In the books Harry never sees Pettigrew on the map.

Maps of Hogsmeade, maps of Diagon Alley, maps of Nockturn Alley... imagine the utility for Aurors. Being able to immediately see criminal wizards entering any of the maps, regardless of disguise, and being able to apparate directly to their position, ready to stupefy. It was the equivalent of having someone who you believed was one of your worst enemies learning all of your most embarrassing secrets. If someone Harry trusted taught him how to get the hang of it first (like Lupin or Sirius - they could have easily been snuck into the castle), and THEN they had Snape help Harry master it, it would have worked out much better in the long run.

Sirius seems like the Slytherin, Black family, and had the cunning, ambition and resourcfulness to survive and escape askaban. Peter is the Hufflepuff but in a strange way. I think the map is tied to Hogwart's main entrance. In Prisoner of Azkaban, Flitwich trains the front oaken door to recognize Sirius in order to not grant him access into the castle. I think the Marauders could have put a spell on the entrance to "scan" and "register" everyone that enters through it, then link them onto their map. This could be how even people who have never been to Hogwarts before or even live in the UK (such as foreign guests) have their name and location appear up on the map.

Would The Map update itself or would The Map be out of date? We know it shows secret passages out of the school that no longer exist for various reasons and if I remember correctly the passage to The Hogshead isn’t on there (but that may be a Room of Requirement thing). Yeah, you had it right. Fred and George warn Harry that one of the passages shown behind a mirror had caved in, which wouldn't be necessary if the map showed it up-to-date. So presumably it does not update, with the likely exception of the parts that regularly changed when they were at school, like staircases.

Here is a theory for you, why is Snape in Slytherin?? You get sorted based on what you value most, and Snape never really comes across as ambitious. Maybe you could argue that the reason Snape resents James so much is because of all the glory James seemed to get at Hogwarts 🤔 but the story really implies that has dislike of James is due to his feelings for Lilly.

ambition isn't the only thing slytherins value. his self proclaimed nickname was the half blood prince, which admittedly is a double, since his mother's maiden name was prince, iirc, and he was a half blood, but also referring to yourself as royalty is very prideful. he was also a double agent, which requires a lot of cunning.

Sometimes I think it’s simpler than a complex series of traits that you value. Sometimes it’s the people you look up to, and the legacies that you value. I don’t know exactly why Snape values Slytherin over Gryffindor, but he believed that Slytherin was the place to be, and so the hat listened. Similarly, Peter saw James, Sirius, and Lupin who all wanted to be in Gryffindor, and wanted to be as well, so the hat obliged and put him in Gryffindor. Ditto Ron, Hermione, Neville, and countless others.

If you really think about it, Peter Petigrew mangaged the MOST mischief out of the 4 in the long run. He killed 12 muggles, framed one of his best friends for the murders, had his friend be sent to Azkaban, lived in hiding for years under the Order of the Phoenix's nose, orchestrated the kidnapping of Harry (during the TWT) and brought Voldemort back. I hate to say it... he's one sneaky Niffler! 😅

Even tho i have read the series twice, my brain tends to combine "book canon" with "movie canon", so I sometimes miss some of the things that only happened in the movie. The exception is the burning of the Burrow. I was very happy to find that incident only happened in the movie. And, since I watched the movies first, I could hear the actor's voices in my head while reading....even if the scene didn't happen in the movie.

The theory where only marauders can see eachother on the map is easily disproven by a small section from Chapter 19 of Prisoner of Azkaban: Snape was slightly breathless, but his face was full of suppressed triumph. "You're wondering, perhaps, how I knew you were here?" he said, his eyes glittering. "I've just been to your office, Lupin. You forgot to take your potion tonight, so I took a gobletful along. 5:00 was Filch around when the Marauders were? It's easy to think so since he's a really old squib, so what else would he be doing, but Mrs Weasly is younger than Filch (in the movie, I don't remember if Filch's age was revealed in the books as "greasy" doesn't really convey age) and she directly mentioned having not only a different groundskeeper but one that was a wizard. It would make sense that the office of the groundskeeper would be the same despite the owner, so the map probably got taken by a wizard groundskeeper.

I've just finished reading the books, and I don't know if anyone else has thought of this before, but it recently occurred to me that there might be more depth to the Marauder’s Map than we think. I’m reminded of the conversation between Harry and Mr. Weasley, in which Mr. Weasley says, “Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain[.]” I argue that the Marauder’s Map could have thought for itself, perhaps, not as intelligently as the Diary of Tom Riddle, but maybe enough that it also should not have been so easily trusted. There are a few things I’d like to point out. 1. How did Filch know that this blank piece of parchment should be stored with other “dangerous” confiscations? 2. All the characters who used the Marauders map, ended up dying. (perhaps making their mischief truly “managed”) Now, I’ve only read through the books once, and I most definitely could be mistaken, I have just been wondering if anyone else had noticed this?

I always assumed that the phrase wasn't a specific passcode, but that anything the map recognises as acceptable would work. But Fred and George "unlocked" the map using that specific phrase (perhaps when they were goofing around with each other) and assumed it was a specific lock and key, passing it down to Harry. I think if Harry just said anything along the lines of "I'm the son of James Potter" that would have been good enough too, and he'd of course get custom greeting lines from the Messers first :)

@@meleardil but Harry DID see Peter (as a rat). That's why he told Lupin that he saw someone (Peter Pettigrew) on the map who shouldn't be there because he knew him to be dead. Additionally, if what you say about human/animal form mattered then Peter was a rat up until Severus and Lupin forced him to change back to a human, so if the map didn't see them in animal form, Lupin wouldn't be able to see Peter and follow them to the Shaking Shack. 11:50 I think it's a variation on this theory. Anyone shows up on the map as a set of footprints with their name next to the footprints, except for a Marauder. Their names are forever on the front cover, so they only show up as unnamed footprints. And if you didn't know about that particular feature, you'd never notice an extra person on the map (especially if the unnamed footprints in Ron's bed were the size of a rat's). But if you're a Marauder and you know that the only unnamed rat-sized footprints that show up on the map belong to your one-time friend Peter Pettigrew...

While a cool theory, the idea the map hides the Marauders from other's eyes doesn't fly, as Snape himself says he saw Lupin going down the tunnel. And we all know the Marauders would make sure Snape of all people can't use the map, hence the insults. But since Lupin left it on when he went to save Harry, Snape could read it. "You're wondering, perhaps, how I knew you were here?" he said, his eyes glittering. "I've just been to your office, Lupin. You forgot to take your potion tonight so I took a gobletful along. And very lucky I did... lucky for me, I mean. Lying on your desk was a certain map. One glance at it told me all I needed to know. I saw you running along this passageway and out of sight." If anything, if you want the theory to still work, it could be that the map doesn't show the Marauders unless a Marauder activates it. That way other people can't use it against them still, but they can use it to find each other while leaving the scenario where Snape uses it available.

Maybe the marauders charmed it so that they are invisible on the map, only specifically in animagus or werewolf forms, because then it could explain why the twins never mentioned NOT seeing lupin on the map but also don’t know Peter is here, because Peter is perpetually in rat form. From the marauders pov, I think the map getting discovered and them using it to break rules won’t be too big a deal even if they lost it and get punished but being animagus is the biggest secret they have and they cannot have that be known, so even if they lost it and someone else uses it, they would see the name of Sirius black where a black dog is for example. Also that way they can safely pass the map on without the risk of the successor knowing the animagus secret.

I once heard that the spell to create the map requires you to enchant the map in every room, kind of like planting bugs/video cameras. It would require getting to every room, other houses and head masters offices, which is why the room of requirement is not there, even if mapped, it was mapped as what ever it was but it would need that exact configuration for the map to work. Kind of would be a cool story of how the marauders got to all the locations.

I'd like to point out two things: 1: The map shows shoeprints, so it's not sensing through the invisibility cloak but through the feet of the person which isn't "covered" by the cloak, probably having something to do with the map's relationship to the actual architecture of the building itself, aka the floor. 2: Would the map even work outside of the bounds in which it is supposed to be locating the people within? It would make more sense for the marauders to leave it at the school if it just became a normal map outside of it, to include other reasons already stated by the Carlin Brothers.

Given the map was designed to give a response to the "Reveal Your Secrets" spell to Snape, I can see the paper being able to use its own homunculus charm to tell who is holding the paper at the time. That being said, since it didn't register that Snape asking the question, and Fred and George being very talented students who, given their experimentation with magical creations and their brother Charlie being a curse breaker would absolutely either know the spell Snape attempted to use, or an equivalent to find out secrets they could use, I can imagine the spell doing the following: Fred and/or George(taps paper with wand) "Reveal Your Secrets" Maurauder's Map Response, "Fred(and/or George) Weasley, are you up to no good?" The twins, "Absolutely" Maurauder's Map, "Do you Solemnly Swear it?" After which they reply with the phrase and before the map reverts, says, "Till your Mischeif Be Managed... The Maurauders Proudly Present..." I can essentially see this as a way of teaching the very specific passcode to someone who does not already know it, but also not covered in this video, how they learned what the deactivation phrase was.

The map not showing the Mauraders except to other Mauraders is an interesting theory but has one major flaw in it. In Prisoner of Azkaban Snape only knows where to go to find Lupin because he saw Lupins name on the map going down the passage to the shreaking shack. Shapes not Maurader and is a known enemy of the Mauraders so if there was anyone they would have wanted to have themselves hidden from it would have been him. My reference for this is chapter 19 of Prisoner of Azkaban about 59 seconds into the audible version.

Harry can not see Peter, but Harry can see Lupin. Snape was able to see Lupin too. Why? The Marauders are visible on the map in HUMAN form, but dont show up for others in ANIMAL form, only to each other. It also makes sense.

I think its also worth noting that the map has been confiscated by Filch more than once- and stolen back more than once. 1. In 1988, the map was stolen by Peeves from Filch. 2. The map had, by 1988, ended up in the possession of Mundungus Fletcher. The map was then stolen from him. 3. The Hogwarts Mystery player found the Marauder's Map in the Icy Corridor along with Scabbers- who was still Percy's. The Hogwarts Mystery player does not know what this is, and gives to Rakepick. 4. Rakepick told The Hogwarts Mystery player the secret way to accesses it. The wiki states, "The Hogwarts Mystery player planned to use the map, and talked about what they saw on the map. They mentioned a person moving so quickly that they couldn't read the person's name. After this mention, Rakepick took the map, saying that the person is the one who attacked Mundungus Fletcher and that keeping their name a secret is to protect Jacob's sibling." The person who attacked Mundungus was probably Peter Pettigrew. Weasley

Harry isn't a Marauder and was able to see Peter on the Map (or was that only in the movie?). Or maybe, the map reveals Marauders to their the descendants too.

Except Harry saw Peter Pettigrew. He told Lupin he saw someone he knew to be dead. That was why he was out in the first place! And that’s why Lupin was looking for him too…

So many people are talking about Harry seeing Peter Pettigrew on the map, but that only happened in the movie.

*2 points of discussion* 1. In this video, aunt Marge is referred to as "the literal worst". But i thought that role was promised to umbridge for eternity. NEW THEORY: is Harry's aunt Marge possibly related to Umbridge? (They are both terrible people) 2. The map (at least in the movies) shows Filch. If a previous theory is true, can the map show a poltergeist? What about ghosts? Or does the map prove filch is human?

Umbridge is a half-blood, which means there are Muggles in her family. It's possible. Unfortunately, that would make her related to Harry through Vernon's marriage.

Filch and peeves are both referenced in the book on the map im not sure if theres ever a reference to a ghost

@madalynnr9940 so if peeves is mentioned, (regardless of ghosts) it is still possible filch can be a poltergeist. Gotcha

@coolnerdlll6053 maybe that's why Marge is such a miserable person. Her relative (that she must have some knowledge about) was treated better than she was by adults growing up, and she resents that. {A lot like how petunia was envious of and hated Lily). Maybe she has heard she has a cushy, high ranking (magical) government job.

@@iowa89357NO Filch is a human being, a squib and NOT an agent of chaos. So he can't be a poltergeist lol.

I figured the marauders were kind of Peeves' favorites like the twins are so they entrusted him to give the password to ones he felt were "worthy."

I think to add to the theory of The mauraders can only be seen on the map by the mauraders and their kin (CHildren grandchildren etc)

You should do a video connecting the seven books to the eight days of Holy Week, bc it connects really well (I’m sure you could make the video appealing to everyone, not just Christians)

I am commenting off memory here. Isn't one of Fred and George's older brothers an artifact finder for Gringotts? Also, their dad is not only into finding out how muggle tech works, he is responsible for reverse engineering and neutralizing magical traps used on muggles. I have always had the thought that Fred and George would have picked their older brother and dad's brains on cracking these types of spells used to unlock the map.

Veery unfortunately, Snape sees Lupin on the map when he heads to the tunnel on his way to the shreaking shack so even Snape - and therefore everyone, I assume - can see everyone else, even the marauders on the map. I would have loved the theory that they were only visible for other marauders but it sadly is disproven by the books.

On the note of "only the Marauders could see each other," I think it's got an asterisk after each: "and potential children," i.e. since Prongs/Moony was his dad, Harry and Ted (Lupin) would have been able to at least see the remaining Marauders, but potentially each other!

The Marauder's Map is sufficiently awesome that I doubt it was the first edition or only copy. More than likely this was the one donated to future students. James lost his other versions when he died, never getting the opportunity to pass another copy along to his children. Sirius and Peter lost theirs as well in the aftermath. Lupin was always a goody, goody and it is likely his copy that was donated. The other copies were all likely accidentally thrown away as garbage, but again , no way the one with the fancy introduction was their first attempt.
