I've long been of the opinion that Kvothe knows good and well about his lackless lineage, and just isn't going to reveal that to chronicler / the reader until the point where Kvothe finds out in the story. After all, he calls specific attention to the lackless rhyme not once, but twice, and he's careful to show his mother's reaction to it the first time, and he calls attention to his father's song about her, and his mother's reaction to that. Given the probably dozens of songs his father made up, and the probably hundreds of songs he has in his repertoire, this much attention on the subject has to be intentional. My personal headcannon is that this is because he doesn't find out until after Baron Jakis kills his way to the throne, and Baron Jakis finds out that Kvothe is alive and has a better claim to the throne, and the two fight. Also, I hate to be the one to say this, but even given that his mother was Natilia Lackless (and I do think that's a given), his last name wouldn't be Lackless because A) she changed her name, and B) she was the wrong gender parent

Kvothe is a good storyteller. He said at some point that all parts of the story are important even if they might not seem like it. So he definitely knows but the story wouldn't be a good story if he gave it away beforehand.

Well, his parents weren't married so his last name could be Lackless. And yes, Natalia was changed her name but it doesn't matter. It's about the blood line and true heritage. Actually the only obstacle is even if he'll eventually finds out, how could he prove that to the others? He can't be a Lackless if no one believes that. So it can't affect the story. But it kinda looks like it will. But how? Oh, God! Patrick is trying to make us crazy!!

And someday an arrogant boy is coming and saying that he is the true heir because he can open a box.. He needs someone to support him. Someone who people could trust and knows about the box. Like Maer. Or Meluan but I'm not sure how Meluan would react to this. But I really would like to see him making up with his aunt.

I don’t know. The inciting incident of meeting the chandrian was definitely unlucky and he was unlucky enough to run into Ambrose before anyone else at the university. Honestly that’s enough bad luck for two lifetimes right there.

I don't think so. He's said in interviews and live streams before that he just has trouble tieing up the story without any loose ends and that the first two books derailed so much from his original plan of the story that he now has trouble ending it in a neat and conclusive way. He's also (obviously) a perfectionist so he keeps rewriting parts of the book over and over again.

The thing I love the most about this series is that Kvothe refuses to spoil any big secrets about his own story. Throughout the books, he mentions a lot of things that were big secrets to him at the time, like when he comes across the doors of stone in the arcanum, but he doesn’t say what the answer is until he gets to the point in the story he figures it out. He is not above spoiling things that he deems are obvious, like when he mentions that Jakis tried to kill him multiple times and the first time wasn’t even for a few more chapters and the second one wasn’t until the second book, but he wants the story of his life to be told as if it were an actual story. This shows when, at 2 different points in the story, he doesn’t refer to Dena by name, despite the fact that he himself recognized her at that moment in time for the simple fact that it reads better. He’s also not above skipping parts of his life that he feels don’t need to be explained anymore than just being mentioned in passing, like him actually traveling to Vintus and not expanding at all on the pirate attack and getting shipwrecked or his trial which he doesn’t expand on because it’s already so heavily documented and known to the public

Unfortunately, this is not entirely true. Kvothe spoils that the chandrian are still alive by talking about them in the present tense, confirming that he never killed them as he intended

So, since Kvothe is technically in the line to becoming King of Ventus (aka. King of the Wind), what if he actually end up as the King of Ventus and the name Kingkiller (and also the whole trilogy: the Kingkiller Chronicle) ends up as how he "kills" himself being the King and thus becoming the legend he is.

He may have noble roots but he is a ruh. The moment his mother left her nobel family his clames to the throne died. She stept away from being in line for the throne, so her sone can't just say " hey I wanna be king" his real blood doesn't matter because of his upbringing an his father's blood as an edema ruh and how can he proof it any ways? It's not like DNA test are a thing in his world. He may realize it himself and maybe he will try being king before ambrose but I think no one else would really care ore belive. So I think he has to kill the king and not himself to get this name... (sorry if the spelling is of, English is not my first language)

I remember him saying that the series is a tragedy...so it's pretty possible that Kvothe will die. But Rothfuss also said that the kingkiller chronicles are only a prequel to another story he wants to tell. So I could imagine that after we heard about kvothes past (aka the kingkiller chronicles) we will get a new series about Kvothe trying to save the world as it is now and try and restore balance. Considering how long it takes Rothfuss to finish the 3rd book I'm not sure if I'll live to read any of that though 😅

I think instead that Ambrose will blame Kvothe for killing the current king of Vintas but he hasn't actually done it. People are taking up the King's gold to join his army during the interludes which means there is currently a king (potentially Ambrose).

Elodin is one of my favorite characters. He's so strange, amusing, and mysterious. He might actually be one of the most powerful people in the series and just acts like a goofball

I think Devi and Auri are key characters to the whole story...we just don't know it yet. I've always viewed Elodin as a clever story telling device to give some important details away at the right time. Some theories suggest that he's Taborlin the Great....that would be pretty cool.

Nine months later, I’m still so sad these Kingkiller videos didn’t get more traction. This is the exact kind of series that deserves that attention of the Carlin Brothers. It’s so ripe with these juicy and delicious theories! Absolutely up your alley. One note, the Cthaeh doesn't always speak the truth, It can see all permutations of the future and tells you exactly what you need to hear to make the most destructive and chaotic path move forward. So the Cthaeh could lie to you by telling you something that will send you down a more destructive path. Personally this is one of my favorite story devices of all time because it is so open ended.

@@Poisindart2000 That isnt how I have understood it, Bast never mentions anything about truth when he is speaking of the Cthaeh. He just mentions that all choices a person makes will be catastrophic. The way I read it, it is implied that the Cthaeh basically weaves a story of truth and misinformation that will send the listener down the worst possible path. Nothing needs to directly be a lie, but much of it is extremely selective as to envoke the worst possible outcome.

Heres my guess for the end of the series: He kills that pirate guy you mentioned after he wrongly assumes the throne after killing the other heirs. Kvothe is the rightful heir, hence kingkiller but twist Kvothe is the actual rightful king.

OMGGG SO EXCITED FOR THESE THEORIES! I have reread these books for years and I am so happy you guys found them and enjoy then as much as I do! Just a few things that might help you guys though: 1) Listening to Pat say Kvothe, I hear him lean into the V a lot more, rather than changing it into a W 2) Gillers are simply full arcanists who have chosen to stay and work at the university rather than go out into the world. The Edema Ruh that was working for the archives was an acquisitions scriv, not a giller (actually he might have been one of Lauren's gillers as well, but the two terms are in no way synonymous). You mixed up the two terms in the livestream a couple of days ago and my ocd is requiring me to correct you on it (SORRY!!) Anyways, love the video guys!

In my opinion, it's entirely up to the reader. Authors have a say in what goes into a book, but not on what a reader takes away from that work. The work in rights might belong to Pat, but in reality, the world he's created is different to each reader.

I think the pronunciation confusion comes from the fact that very early on in the book, he says it's pronounced like "quoth." I think most of us assumed, "yeah, quoth with a v thrown in, kvv-oh-thh," but I can get why someone would misinterpret that.

You know, I think you both would like to read The Folk of the Air. It's a trilogy and the first book is The Cruel Prince. Vivienne, Jude and Taryn were three girls living happily with their human parents when their mother's ex-husband and Vivi's biological father, a Fae, comes in wanting revenge. Now, the three girls are teenagers, orphans living in Faerie Land with their Fae father. And Jude specifically must fight and learn to be strong enough to earn the Folk's respect, more specifically the royal family and a certain very cruel, very attractive prince.

The way you're talking about this, and all the foreshadowing just makes me think that you two have to read Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere and Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. You'd love those series, especially the former with all the theorizing potential there still is (since the second is finished, though we still have some questions). They're both right up your alley, and seeing you enjoying NOTW just confirms that for me.

The Lackless theory is basically the R+L=J of Kingkiller. Technically it hasn't been confirmed in the books, but it's nearly universally accepted as canon. I'm really excited to see more Kingkiller content from you guys!

That book series seems right up your lane. People have been giving theories about that series for two decades now and it is not done yet. If you haven’t given it a look I think you will love it. This is going to be a great path for you two, I’m super excited!!! But if we are on the topic of names and how they are important... can we agree to say the V in Kvothe... as in, KV- Othe . This is super important. Rothfus is purposeful with his names. Yes in the book he says “nearly like quoth” but it’s NEARLY, QU and KV are profoundly different. I don’t mean to rant, I fully appreciate your channel and the fact you two are going down the rabbit hole that is the name of the wind, which is my favorite story of all time. I look forward to hearing what you think and the theories that you are contemplating. His name is Kvothe, nearly spoken the same as quoth. 😉
