Also love how Ty Lee's fighting style is pressure points; a way to defeat an opponent without killing them. The Air Nomads were renowned as peaceful, so what better way to defend yourself than with a way to temporarily knockout a threat! I doubt Ty Lee is a direct Air Nomad, but I can see her ancestors being Air Nomads that could hide without their arrows, and having them develop and pass down the pressure point fighting style!

Creating and manipulating vacuums and pressure waves would be no joke and when added to her already impressive maneuverability she could practically fly. And don't get me started on gale-force wind in opposing directions that, while not sharp as anime typically depicts it, could likely tear apart anything we've seen in the given world.

@@Draiocht012 Air bending is probably the most dangerous of all the elements in the show.... there is basically unlimited air and you can never run out of it... while even firebenders can run out of energy for their firebending given enough time as the energy comes from within them but is still used up... airbending however is completely unlimited... Its a good thing that the airbenders are basically pacifists that avoid fighting at all costs otherwise they would be a threat far worse than the fire nation.

This seems like a rather reasonable explanation. A former air nomad marrying into a high ranking Fire Nation family would probably also get away with swearing loyalty and renouncing any allegiance to the Air Nation if questioned. Ty Lee is very clearly a Fire Nation citizen and sees herself as such. Even if her skills/abilities point towards an Air Nomad great grandparent or such, there is zero evidence to suggest they are explicitly taught to "keep the Air Nation alive" or anything like that.

Oh, I'd go even farther than that: I 100% believe she's an untrained airbender. She's more than just 'lightfooted' -- look at the height of all her jumps! Nobody but Aang can jump that high. She wasn't just in the circus -- she was a trapeze performer in specific, and the brief glimpse we got of her at work implies that she's normally quite comfortable in midair. Her fighting style seems to emphasize speed and evasion, like Aang's does, and rather than aggression like Azula's or Mai's. So yeah, Aang might have been the last actual survivor of the Air Nomads as they were before the, um, genocide, but I'm sure there are other untrained airbenders with refugee ancestry that just ... didn't turn up in canon often.

I think the Kyoshi Warriors were never her ending point. I think it’s just one step on her journey of self-discovery, learning how to be her own person, untethered to anyone. She had that sorta in the circus but Azula was still a looming threat even then, and she ruined it for Ty Lee. So Ty Lee would have to find something in which she feels secure to be herself

I read that air bender’s bending weakens when they are not spiritual. Avatar Kiyoshi’s mom was an air bender who become a criminal and her bending got weaker as a result. That is why she used fans (and eventually kiyoshi used them!!). The spiritual life of air nomads meant almost all were benders but if they had to hide and didn’t practice spirituality and air nomad culture, their bending would eventually faded away. Maybe the people who gained air bending in Harmonic conversion in LOK had air nomad Ancestry!!

Funny thing, in the novels, Avatar Kyoshi’s mother was an air nomad. However, after adopting a criminal lifestyle, her bending was spiritually blocked - which is where Kyoshi inherited her war fans.

@bryan diaz varela it didn't have to do with the criminal lifestyle directly. It's due to spirituality. Zaheer, although a criminal was very spiritual. Jesa, Kyoshi's mother, abandoned the spiritualistic lifestyle which caused her air bending to wane. So this theory about Ty Lee being an air nomad descendant is very plausible. Since air nomads would have to hide their ability and abandon their culture, traditions and lifestyle to the point that their air bending became dormant.

I think your theory is extremely possible. Referencing to Legends of Korra after the Harmonic Convergence, Airbenders suddenly started popping up everywhere for what seemed like no reason. But what if it wasn't for no reason? What if all the people who gained Airbending were all descendants of surviving Air Nomads? Theory: Monk Gyatso was part of the White Lotus. He played Pi-sho with Aang all the time. In any case, I do agree that there could have been Air nomads surviving the genocide of their culture, mostly hiding in the earth nation because, well, it is huge and have some safe spots that resisted the 100 years of war, but some could also hid on the north and south pole, and even in the fire nation. It is also possible that Ty Lee's airbender ancestors married into the fire nation before the war started, so even if her ancestry is known, nobody would suspect or see her in a bad light. Also, in LoK, the new air benders could be the descendants of the surviving air nomads, with their bending reawakening due to the harmonic convergence.

This actually would explain the Korra series too. In the legend of Korra, a bunch of people are suddenly able to airbend after a spiritual occurrence. The people who are able to suddenly airbend seem to be random in the show, without any pattern. But if you think about it, Bumi, Avatar Aangs first non-bender son, gets airbending. What are the odds of him, specifically him getting airbending. The answer is really really high! He carries the genetic marker of an Airbender, and the spiritual occurrence triggered his bending. That would mean for all other people in the world who obtained airbending, they would have carried the genetic marker for an Airbender too by ancestry, making the whole deal way less random, but actually quite clever. This would also mean that there were in fact a lot of survivors after the initial attack. That, or the airnomads were really into interracial reproduction.

well, Air Bending is based on Bagua Zhang (which is the same style used by the Hyuugas if you watch Naruto) which focuses on redirecting your opponent's energy. Ty Lee's style is Kyusho Jitsu, which focuses on pressure points and disabling your opponent's limbs. Following the philosophy of redirecting energy, I would say either they would simply still learn Bagua Zhang, or Aikido would be favored. Aikido follows the same principle of redirecting energy, and is used by the Kyoshi warriors, who use fans as their main weapon, which would indicate favor of Air bending, which we see Kyoshi use often, despite her Earth Kingdom lineage.

There's enough experience in every avatar ever to be proficient with countering all kinds of attacks. Lightning was obviously an exception. It helps that lightning literally moves at the speed of light, and someone generating it would be hard to hear from a distance in a room full of combat, but someone within a few feet of you should at least cause air to move in a way the avatar would notice.

This is how I took it too. I would like to add Ty Lee’s extreme agility as proof she was actually an airbender. 1) airbending is the only bending you can’t see, such as when Aang airbends in the blind bandit and everyone thinks he’s earth bending. 2) There are times when Ty Lee appears to be jumping off the air (s2 e8), and she can drop from higher distances than everyone else. Not saying she was trained, she was probably the first air bender in her family in generations, but I think she subconsciously used it in her fighting style.

I was thinking something similar because yes it's a cartoon but the feats of acrobatic ability is almost impossible in some scenes and the show does a pretty good job at being in the realm of the realistic (when it comes to normal human abilities and not bending obviously). @@Watcher-in-the-Dark Exactly this. Ty Lee is one of the few "non-benders" we have ever seen that jumps around the way she does and is as nimble as she is. Her appearance is also VERY out-of-line with the Fire Nation and even the circus master had a more distinguished fire nation appearance compared to her. Her clothes bear a heavy resemblance to Air Nomad styles, just with a modern girly twist and in muted Fire Nation colors, and she also strongly resembles Jinora. Even if she has no bending, I can see a non-bender Air Nomad having that kind of physical nimbleness naturally, as it's just characteristic of their people to be that way. She also uses non-lethal methods to fight. I think this was all intentionally meant to hint that she had air nomad ancestors. She just sticks out like a sore thumb among fire nation citizens and the one character she she resembles the most-- not even just in her fighting and fashion styles, and physical appearance, but in personality-- is Aang. She's a bit more bubbly than even he is, but she has a similar approach to the world and is light-hearted and joyful like he is. She is also the only other character on the show with even remotely the same amount of agility and light-footedness.

I've theorized that this vary thing is what lead to the resurgence of the air benders in Korra. All the people who gained the power of air bending after harmonic convergence were the non-bending descendants of air nomads who went into hiding after the war. My three biggest pieces of evidence for this theory are as follows. 1st, we have Bumi, the only know non-bending child of an air bender. 2nd, we have the fact that almost, if not all, of the new air benders are from what is now, or was at one point, the earth kingdom, the largest population, and most likely place for the refugees to seek to hide. The 3rd evidence is Zaheer. In TLoK, it doesn't say much about where Zaheer came from. What we do know is that he didn't learn all those things about ancient air nomad beliefs in that cell for all those years. My guess is that it's something that was passed down his family, like stories about where their ancestors came from? Anyway, I've been sitting on this one for a while, this just seemed like the perfect place to say it all out loud.

All air nomads were monks, and even if they weren't it is stated that air nomads have a 100% bender rate do to their deep connection to the spirit world. So anyone of air nomad descent would be an Airbender. The only exceptions to the air bender rule are Aangs childrens, which may be because of him being the Avatar, or Katara being incredibly predisposed to breed non benders

There has to be multiple genes involved in bending abilities. Neither of Sokka and Katara's parent's were benders, but Katara was, same with Toph's parent's neither were benders. Then you have where both Katara and Aang produce one child without the ability to bend, then Zuko's mother was never shown to have bending abilities, but both her children were benders. There's no good explanation for this other than multiple factors are needed not only to determine if someone is a bender, but also how types of bendings interact genetically. It should be pointed out that until Aang and Katara had children there are no known (to us) incidences of mixed bender relations/children.

Just because the show is called "The last airbender" doesn't mean that he actually is, just that everyone thinks he is. It's entirely possible that more survived but stopped bending out of fear. Maybe they didn't even tell their kids and they never found out but were still able to bend in theory.

In theory, that's possible but even if Air Benders DID escape, it was likely not in large numbers, and the only feasible scenario would be Northern Air Nomads and Western Air Nomads escaping to the Northwestern Earth Kingdom, but having been detatched, it's likely they never even knew of the Fire Nation Colonies in the Earth Kingdom. The only way they would have been safe is if they got to Ba Sing Se, but getting that far would have been difficult in and of itself, and they didn't even know such an atrocity as the Air Nomad Genocide was even happening there. The only other strongholds were the North Pole, who really didn't involve themselves with outside conflicts unless it were necessary, and to them it wasn't, and Omashu, who was having an internal revolution, one that would take YEARS to get Bumi on the throne. In terms of escaped airbenders, the best bet would be southern Air Benders escaping to the south pole, and that DOES have some ground, because the Fire Nation seemed very dead set on eliminating any bender in the South Pole. It also has some ground in that Aang's intended destination when he ran away was the Southern Water Tribe. The Air Benders didn't have a very large population at all really, but the lack of any human remains in any of the air temples meant one of two things. Most people escaped, or most people were captured then killed on the Fire Nation homeland. Any escaped Air Benders in the Earth Kingdom, without Ba Sing Se's support, would likely have been inprisoning Air Benders themselves and selling them to the Fire Nation so as to avoid large scale conflict. ANY remaining Air Benders would have to live the rest of their lives in disguise, and Air Bending as a genetic trait was likely a weak one, and fizzled out over the 100 years. Aside from the small numbers of sky bison that were maintained, Air Bending was almost entirely a lost art. But Gran Gran says nobody had seen an Air Bender in 100 years, meaning Air Benders either didn't go there, or they lived as non-benders under false aliases. But by the time Aang was rediscovered, there's almost no way any other human air benders existed, even in secret. For that genetic trait to have survived in the Earth Kingdom is VERY unlikely, and that's assuming any Air Benders managed to live a normal life in the Earth Kingdom. Between the Fire Nation Colonies heavily affecting the western coast of the Earth Kingdom, the Earth Kingdom Provinces outside of Ba Sing Se and Omashu being millataristically challenged, the Earth Kingdom forces would see it more beneficial to themselves to capture remaining Air Benders and sell them as prisoners to the Fire Nation for a profit, than to openly protect them and risk the Fire Nation launching an invasion on the continent.

wait so there’s a theory that any air nomads that managed to escape went to the earth kingdoms, because they could easily fit in since many refugees went to the earth kingdom. i don’t know if J has watch legend of korra, but in the show harmonic convergence takes place and it brought back the air nation. the theory is the air nomads that managed to escape had children and their children had children and so forth. They couldn’t use their bending for fear of getting singled out as air bender and killed, so the air bending gene was suppressed. all of the air benders who were found after harmonic convergence are just descendants of air nomads that escaped. :) idk if it really counts as a theory per sayyy, but i think it works and i like it

The one issue with that theory is Bumi (Aang and Katara's son) gained his air bending ability after harmonic convergence. Given that Tenzin was always an air bender, it's hard to argue that Bumi's air bending gene was suppressed.

I do want to point out that, from knowing the history of the avatar universe, we can pretty much understand why there wasn't much of a distinction or discrimination between the benders and non-benders until Korra's era. The history of humans on avatar universe show us that people didn't use to have such powers. Rather, it was given to them by spirits (or was it spiritgods). So there is a certain awareness that, if you were born a bender, you should be grateful because you were "chosen by the spirits or whatever" and it's not like in HP where it's like, "Unless you are a powerful witch or wizard, you are a disgrace!" - at least to blood-purist families. And, anyway, in HP universe, the history of mankind and muggle-kind is just practically erased to the point where we cannot identify why some humans produce magicals, or why some wizarding couples produce squibs.

Some of their descendants were granted the ability to air bend again, after harmonic convergence (legend of Korra). Ty lee learned to fight at her school, then altered it to fit her chi blocking, which i believe she learned in the circus. She learned balance in the circus, and she is defensive because she lacks offence. Wall running also circus. Every point in the video and in the comment section is confirmation bias, and has no real ground to stand on she has no relation to air nomads just the circus, and a fire nation school.

@@possibly_meta7389 The eyes and different hair do give evidence of different heritage though. Perhaps not an air nomad but she certainly doesn't seem to be just descended from the Fire Nation. I think those are the biggest factors if there is an argument for it as he is right almost all Fire Nation peoples have copper/amber eyes and black hair. The bubbly personality is also something to consider as almost all Fire Nation peoples are very aggressive, stern or with a bad temper. She also fights differently than ANY other Fire Nation individual in the show and the aren't known for any kind of pressure point fighting styles. Even Mai and Azula have similar styles. They use different weapons but they both still use wide stances with overly offensive attacks. There is no reason to believe Ty would receive such special treatment from the teachers to learn a style that is so drastic a difference from literally all other Fire Nation fighting styles. Again though the more physical traits are more evidence to the argument than her combat abilities. Just supporting evidence.

This is my 1st attempt at bringing a theory I want answered to light. Each nation has a highly elite ability that a select few benders can master outside of their normal elements. Some earth-benders can metal-bend (Toff). Some fire-benders can bend lightning (Azula). Some Water-benders can blood-bend (That witch lady, and Katara, even though she never uses it again.) And finally, air-benders can... what can they do? Its bothered be since I was in elementary school watching this show on cable at five A.M. Air-bender are seemingly the only ones who can't bend something else, and I've thought about it, but cannot think of what it would even be. I want SCB to answer that.

I think chi blocking may be part of the answer, actually (that, and flight). I think Ty Lee may be a specialized air bender than doesn’t necessarily bend “air,” but can still bend the aura/energy/air of a persons body. @@parasyte6451 The unassisted flight is a symbol of complete detachment. And air doesn't really need a specialized form, since it's so overwhelmingly ubiquitous. An Earthbender can be separated from earth, a Waterbender can be separated from bodies of water, and extreme cold can hamper a Firebender's ability to produce flame (as well as fire being relatively easy to extinguish with the other three elements) An Airbender is always going to be surrounded by air.

Actually J you're right. According to an interview of the writers the air nomad culture consists of three groups of people: The kids, the adults and the elders. The adults can get married and have kids but after having a kid they leave it to the elders and leave the temples to explore the world. Meanwhile, the kids are raised by the elders in a communal manner. So according to that explanation a lot of the adults were not on the temples and went in hiding after the attacks. We can assume that sozin hunted them down for the remainder of his life

When Azula had that single out of place hair, it was a metaphor to show a warning about her mental state. During her battle with Zuko and Katara, her hair was getting more ruined and ruined. It was showing her mental state. When her hair looked the craziest, she was fully mentally ill and acting like a complete animal, so she was put in a straitjacket and put in an asylum.
