Eh. To figure out how to get translucency right in A Bug's Life, they put a little camera at the end of a stick and filmed grass and weeds on the ground, as in the ground right outside their studio. Not everything they animate leads to an extraordinary adventure. There were other challenges between Disney and Pixar as well. Getting Snow right in Frozen was also a difficult task. In Up, iridescent feathers. In their short Piper, animating water with sand and feathers was taken to another level.

Monsters Ink hair motion is procedural generated in RenderMan. Violets hair usually involves individual nodes that require some tweening due the the physics engine they used back then. Incredibles 2 is MUCH easier now (see Moana's hair) it's much more realistic and accurate since the engine has been updated.

Favorite Pixar animation: Sully, collapsed in the snow, with the wind blowing across his body and the realistic way all of his hair was moving. Yeah, that must have been incredibly difficult at the time. Doesn't hold a candle to the water scenes The Good Dinosaur, but for its complexity at the time, Sully FTW.

I heard that they put a looooooooooot of effort in to Merida's hair. The curls made it really difficult. I'm really surprised that it wasn't in the video since that was the only one I knew before. "We used 1,500 hand-placed, sculpted individual curls," said Chung. "There is this weird paradox where a 'spring' of hair needs to remain stiff in order to hold its curl but it also has to remain soft in its movement."

I hate to be nitpicky... but as an animator it really bothers me when people attribute every aspect of an animated movie under the blanket term of 'animation'. Humans? Octopus? Hard to animate. Fur? Hair? Hard to simulate. Mud? That's the effects team. Animators generally don't animate fur, cloth or hair. Getting a bit technical here but I just thought I'd point it out!

Except they didn't give a shit about the dinosaurs. They studied for 2 years on how to animate fish, they get rats into their office to study them, but for dinosaurs they "looked at an elephant"? I could sorta understand completely ignoring palaeontology, but then at least make the designs appealing. They're the studio that should raise the bar, not regress by a century. Rex from Toy Story looked better than anything in that movie. I expect better from Pixar.

That last bit about the computers taking people’s jobs relates to what I am doing now as a college student. I am studying for bachelors degree in Computer Animation to maybe one day work for someone like Pixar. But all this time I never believed that the computers would ever take away people’s jobs, but rather be a tool for us animators to use as artists. As an animator myself I can 100% confirm all those things you mentioned, like hair, water, organic stuff (aka the trash bags) are all things many animators find to be a real pain to work with. So yeah sometimes we just leave stuff out because it's way too time-consuming or difficult to actually get it to work xD But yes amazing video thankyou! :D

No, dried mud is more like paint splatter if anything.

Dried mud and dirt are two totally different things. Yes dirt does become mud but mud doesn't revert back to dirt when it's dry. Because what you're thinking of as dirt is more or less potting soil. Mud is either loam, silt, or clay and isn't really separate particles when it's in its dry state.

I find these amazing! When I was taking my animation module at Uni, my professor said Brave was only possible to be made in the 2010s because there wasn't a technology that allowed curly, long hair to be animated yet. And that's mostly why Walt Disney Studios was a bit reluctant and took too long to surrender to digital animation: because it's limited, still.

As far as Pixar goes, I'd have to say my favorite movie is The Incredibles. My favorite scene is (not for any technological animation reasons, but because it's funny) is where Elastigirl is going after the key card and is stretched across the hallway, and she unsuspectingly clotheslines two guys driving along in their "jeep".

One thing I recommend is for you to investigate the actual “names” of different positions and artists in a movie depending on the area they are working on. Some things mentioned here were simulated, where people who work with this are called Character FX, and most animators don’t do because it is all about calculating and playing with simulators. There is also the lighting department whose job is to put all the necessary lights and shadows in a shot where they are needed. This confusion just made me cringe a bit since I’m part of the animation industry and we all really appreciate and differentiate the amazing and distinctive talents each department has.

It's interesting how it's always Violet's hair discussed for its difficulty, despite the fact that Mirage's is much longer. But too be fair, Mirage's hair, or at least the situations it was put it, sometimes weren't flattering. For instance, when Mr. Incredible drops Mirage after bluffing about threatening to crush her, her hair falls through his fingers, but it always looked like her hair was phasing through his fingers. Her bangs were on point, but the long segment in the back sometimes looked like a blob.
