Hey I own this subwoofer and I absolutely love it the best sounding subwoofer I have ever heard in my life I has subwoofers for as much as $4000 but this is my favourite one thing was wondering I noticed the light on the back never turns off which means I think the subwoofer never goes on sleep when it's not in use does it mean I have to turn it on and off every time or can it be left like that please help me with this thank you.

I bet all of Jay’s Patreon members are interested in these. I wonder how they would compare to my pair of B&W ASW610’s? I like my sealed B&W’s but if I went for down firing, I’d be tempted by these. But then I might feel like my speakers needed an upgrade. And the cycle continues…

I just got a REL TX/9i in red and it's incredible. I only use about 20-30% volume on the sub to round out my Wharfedale Lintons on a HiFi Rose RS201E. It feels like I'm tripping through a whole new dimension of audio.

You don’t appreciate how much your system or current speakers benefit from adding RELs until you do. I suggest you add a pair of RELs. One of the benefits no one talks about is that for music purposes, you can toe in or out your RELs separately from your main speakers so as to optimize your soundstage and sweet spot. So for example you can have your main speakers fire straight ahead. But you can toe in your RELs. As for the T/5x giveaway, I would pair it with a pair of Zu Audio Dirty Weekend speakers with the upgraded tweeters and capacitors. Driving them would be a Naim UnitiStar. Thanks!

I built a pair of the CSS Criton 1TDXs based on your review of the base model Criton. I have a Denafrips Ares 2 connected to a Rogue Sphinx V3. I listen to a lot of fast paced music such as Japanese hardcore and D-Beat. The Critons definately keep up with the speed of the bass. In my room the bass is pretty good but just missing that very bottom end. I need a subwoofer that can keep up the speed and fill out the bottom end. It would be awesome to have a T5 X to compliment the Critons. Tightening my belt and eating ramen saving for one. If I happen to win, my stomach will thank you. Thank you for all the advice on gear over the years. The Ares 2 and CSS Critons have changed my life

I liked the T7i and how easy it was to blend it into my system that I bought another one (used) and that definitely made things better, though one in a fairly smaller room is all you need.

An 18" Professional audio subwoofer can play fast too when compared with a smaller subwoofer such as this REL. Because of the large cone surface area the 18" subwoofer has, it hardly has to move inwards/outwards so there's a great transient response and they can play really low effortlessly. And I can tell you that what a Professional Audio subwoofer does best is to play music. That's what it's made for. Try it and see for yourself.

My REL Q400 pees me off enormously. It works superbly well in home cinema LFE mode with it's (phantom centre &) 4 bookshelf speakers mounted high up in L + R corners front & back, tilted down towards listening sofa, no prob, great earth shaking bass & dynamic explosions etc etc. But apart from that (much less used home cinema role) ..trying to get that REL Q400e singing with me on my listening couch with whatever speaker pair i may have in position... (always firing down long length of room thats twice the length of it's 18'ft width) ...i only get the sub's bass improvement when my head is at most, 8'ish inches or better less, from a side walls... (sub sounds deep & superbly integrated when my head is 6'ish" from sidewall above my equipment shelves (set back in 15" deep, 5'ft wide alcove halfway down room's sidewall) ...but soon as i move away to approach the listening sofa 2/3'rds down room's length away from speaker's end, all & any of that bass improvement i heard when adjusting whatever with my forehead nearly touching the sidwall is gone, plus i feel a lessening of the speaker's own deep bass, that's most probably due to some degree of anti-phase bass in the sub/ speaker overlap region. The REL's phase switch is 2-way, i.e. "none or a total max' possible" shift but it's absolutely scientifically credible & possible (is it not?) that in any similar problem such as mine, a particular room's shape might call for a "+90 or a -42''deg" phase shift or whatever degree shift, who knows without the option of contuious "all-phase possible" phase shift adjustment as ive seen a few subwoofers do have, for a good resson, i bet. I'd have the sub in the room's middle for stereo if it helped, but it's f/ward faced 12" driver'd 25 or 30 kg huge black lump that will get objections. I'd sooner have a phase-shift based option. Just a thought.

Rel are excellent no doubt about it. Regarding the high level connection marketing I think it is due to tgat every amplifier has speakers level output and not all have preout outputs . I think if every amplifier had low level output them REL would have been marketing rhe LOW level connection. All of those connections are good . Low level is jast as good as high level connection if not better in certain cases. I prefer the low level connection if svs. Two preout outputs on your amp and two RCA cables and your done. simple. efficient.
@Jcan4u

Jay I think the connections are called XLR they are balanced inputs that carries two positive inputs opposed to one from RCA. Positive is that it cancles out distortion for a cleaner sound. Can can only imagine how beautiful it sounds. Proper Bass extensions raises the quality of your music who says otherwise is missing out on something.

Jay, not too long ago, you did a comparison between the Rel T7X and the Kef KC62 and came down firmly in favour of the Kef, describing it as ‘just more musical’! I currently have a pair of ELAC Uni-FI UB5's (the original Uni-fi's) and although I think they have decent bass I think adding a sub would give me a fuller and more dynamic sound. I would absolutely love a Rel T5X because I’ve been obsessed with Rel subs for years now, since hearing one at a friends house, but I’ve never been able to afford one. You want to put it out a phase, around 200 Hz it starts to drift go out to phase from your main speakers ideally if you have dual binding posts switch the phase on the main speakers out of phase what will bring it into phase low frequencies and keep the subwoofer in phase. I would get two Wharfedale sw150 $150 down to 35 Hz can get down to 28 Hz in a room

Great review. I like the short comments by Tujan on T7x vs T5i, I've never own a REL so it's good to know that a higher model could offer more grunt, yes and Jay mentioned tasteful grant. That adds a lot of context to what a good subwoofer could do than merely 30% increase in price and wonder if I should go for T5i or T5x or T7x...Also I find it useful to know if I'm a home theater guy, why should i pay more for a good music subwoofer. To know the quality of good bass extension that adds more bass details, fuller midrange and smoother high frequencies...and I didn't know the HPF adds delay which REL makes it short enough, compare to competitors, so that it becomes easier to integrate with main speakers. Good to know. I'm proud to be a patreon and to support the on going work to provide more useful information to the audio community and help improve tuning my system. :)

Loved the video. REL is the only subwoofer I would consider due to their high level input which is perfect for vinyl. If I won I would pair it with the Tekton 2-10 Perfect Set

What? High level input perfect for vinyl? Is there any paper to support this nonsense?

Not a fan of direct speaker level connections. I prefer preamp line level inputs. Electrical current moves at almost the speed of light. I integrate my sub by not cranking it up too loud in the first place. Thx for the review. I want at least 25Hz or solid 30 Hz for that low B bass.

Might want to wait till you get the speakers completed and located for your room. Those Critons can have a 30hz in room response and can overwhelm the bass in a room .

The T5X seems like it would be a good pairing with my new uni-fi reference bookshelf speakers. I would use it for music as well as for home theater sound . After waiting 20 years to put something nice together, this seems like a great fit for the wait.

Get the tx7, you'll be much happier or the HT1205 if you're going to be using it for movies as well. The tx5 won't be enough and doesn't have the tonal qualities the other subs do.

The RELs on review here don't growl and won't reproduce the full range of a pipe organ. The T/7x is -6Db at 30 hz and you need something that can do 20hz flat if pipe organ is your priority.

These subs look like they will be amazing. I've been interested in rel subs for a few years now but I haven't had the opportunity to get or even listen to one in my area. I've been building my system for the last few years and the last piece of the system is a sub. I still don't have one yet but it's my goal. I was planning on trying to find a used one last spring with some money I had saved up but then work got slow and other priorities happened. Hopefully I'll find a way to get one in the future. I will have it paired with a pair of focal 1038 speakers. I borrowed a friend's jbl ht sub and I was amazed at how much more full the bottom end was and also the midrange. It was like I had a totally different speaker. It made me feel like I wanted to get a rel from all the good things that I have read about them. Someone is going to get a great sub to make their system improve immensely. Good luck everyone.

Hi Jay, I have a Hegel H120 and paired with Vienna Acoutics Hayden standmount speakers. The speakers are front ported and the bass does not go deep enough for my preference. I am planning to add a sub in my system or buy another pair of speakers with deeper punchy bass like Dynaudio. This REL T/5X will certainly blend in with my system.

REL T5 would be the PERFECT addition to my small room system! I happen to be in the market for a small sub. It doesn’t get better than REL. A great match for my Klipsch RP600M. I’m driving them with a variety of amps to keep things interesting 😬. Cheers !

@@erics.4113 I started with an older NAD 763 AVR in two channel. Powered them very nicely. Sounded juicy in a pretty good size room. Good clean power makes them sing. Then, a bit overkill but my PS Audio M1200 mono blocks. Ended up landing on. PS Audio Sprout. Great match for the small room where everything lives now (10x10). Just looking for a small sub to extend the bass a bit. The REL would be awesome.

@@TM-fx2pi yah man I'm in a 10x14ish room with them now and with either of my modest amps I'm about a 1/4 turn on the volume and those klipsch get going. I really want a REL as well. I've tried some spl type subs in the past and I'm not impressed with boomy slam like when I was younger. I want something nimble, fast, articulate to reproduce the bass notes not just the sensation of pressure waves for the bottom end and even up into the lower mid bass. I really think the rel would do it and I'm curious about a stereo pair. Again, not to boost gain but to just go that full length into the bottom like the klipsch do to the top. Real excited to try the rel. I've never even heard them though! And the prices. For a stereo pair of t7x I could get a massive HT sub or some serious stand mount speakers.
