I gave it a like, but disagreed with much of it, based on personal experience. REL’s don’t go as low as most, it’s true, but I happen to like what it does to the presentation.

@@healthynutster I agree, a lot is snake oil. Like rels expensive high level cable upgrade. I think the reason they don't go as low is they are better at picking up low frequency detail. And this is what they mean when they say musical. Subs either slam or have higher fidelity. Its not to say the t9 can't do theater though. I hear that all the time. Personally I have no complaints with what the T9i can do for LFE output. Also another point to consider for the reviewer is the main speakers are quite small? So for music do you have the crossover on the sub set quite high for low/high level in? Mine only covers 40hz (I have large floorstanders) so lower for 2 channel, vs LFE which is obviously up to 120hz.

Hello [young] Man, You don't need a million pound special microphone. We don't listen to music with special microphones, we listen to music with something far more sophisticated, our ears, brains and even our eyes that have a psychological impact on our perceptions. The question we want answered by a reviewer is their opinion on which sounds best, or grades of that question re various aspects of the sound v other gear that's available and we're hoping that gear will emerge that is superior at a lower cost, e.g. a £1k sub that trounces all/most £5k subs, ...that's the dream, but failing that we want to know what's the best bang for our buck v our taste and reviewers that we trust have similar tastes help us to shorten the journey by identifying exceptional gear that we can short-list. Does this snake oil taste good v other snake oil? Does it make my ears tingle and fizz in a good way? Is it a complete waste of space, time and money? Your review has left me more confused.

I just added two REL T-Zero MKIII subs to my 2 channel rig... I cannot believe what these two muskmelon sized subs are doing in my medium sized room. I have two SVS SB3000 subs too. I placed the two RELs in the same positions as the SVS units. I run them with a pair of Magnepan LRS+ speakers, using an active crossover. These can easily replace the two SVS subs, they are that good, and honestly dig low in my room. And much will have to do with your room folks.

I think the issue here is, you're an SP customer, not an SQ customer. You need slam for movies, while the T9x does do it to an extent, it doesn't to the extent of say SVS in the same price bracket. What it does do which the SVS cannot, is blend into your main speakers so much so, that the sub is impossible to localise to the point it simply sounds like an extension of your own speakers. The REL's are so much faster, there's no bloat at all but the downside is less extension. The T9x is for music/movies, if you want this but with more gut punching slam (extension) like the SVS, you have the Series S like the S510, but they're £2k. Sound amazing though, even more speed, they make even tiny speakers sound 10 times their size but you get that real deep bass for theatre as well but with all the delicacy of a speaker. I'm an SQ customer which is why I like REL. Maybe you should try and get a review on the S510, see if that does it for you?

I own 2 REL T9x for my audio (not movie theater). I can tell you that product is very good form performance and design view. Is it prefect, probably not. My subs not jumping around, because i do not use them for cracking windows. Audio level is like food. Salt should be used to bring other flavors in food but not eat salt. Same here REL is the sub where base is helping to hear other sounds but not actual base. it is amassing experience then i could get to that level. FYI: I paired my SF Olypica 3 which have already good mid base. So adding these 2 subs made it a lot better.

fair enough glad you enjoy the sub...to be honest if you carefully listen to what I'm saying in the video..my main issue is with the REL marketing..not really the product itself. I'm surprised your subwoofers aren't moving around. Either they're stuck to the floor with blu-tac (as REL suggest in one of their videos) or you haven't come across the right movie scene yet. Anything with sub 35hz bass turned up to reference 75db made my REL units do the moonwalk

@@propercushty I appreciate your honest review! And agree their marketing is somewhat bullshit. That said, I have the t7x and never had the walking problem either. I had 4 different subs on trial (SVS another REL ht1003 and a B&W.) The only sub that didn't intrude and only added to the music in a positive way was the rel -making itself "invisible". It was also by far the easiest and best integrated with main speakers. It lacks some low low end for movies, but I will live with that compromise any day of the year. With the grille on it's also quite beautiful especially compared to other subs!

It had much better extreme lows but besides that I like the sound of the REL much better. I tried a SVS SB-3000 and never heard a sub that I hated so much! It was just loud obnoxious. I hated it so much I was wondering if I had a defective unit because of how much rave that sub had. I would say its would be hard to beat the REL for accuracy at its price point. Yes the placement was crucial to it took a bit of trial and error to find the best position for frequency response then settng the crossover cutoff point so it played under the main speakers lower roll off then set the gain so it disappears another thing the upgrade cable would definitely work I made my own from some good quality speaker cable I had sitting dormant also the mains cable changed it quite dramatically it was an eye opener for me

I liked them better when they were manufactured in the UK. Also the differences in amplifiers, a/b & d to apply to all types of amps and internally work differently. Please educate yourself on this subject before providing this information. That being said, all of amp types can sound good. That “speaker level” cable works completely different than line in. You should really be using this input. Did you read the way this works? That is what people by REL subs for. It actually uses the RCA input and the speaker line level input together to give you the complete sound from the amplifier, but takes into consideration your volume control. That way the output for the sub matches exactly with the output for your speakers. I think you missed this entirely. You can still adjust gain and cut off, but this is the way this sub is designed to work. I’ve had experience with REL subs for over 15+ years in music and home theater set up and I have no complaints. Also, looking at your room. It appears that you have too much sub for that space using any of these with hardwood floors and no sound deadening material, etc. you should have them on rubber pads or carpet. These used to come with spike feet. You should invest 5 quid on rubber feet. Seems like you are just wanting some thing that will shake your windows. If that’s what you want REL subs may not be for you at the price point. I have had much more thunderous subs but none that one set up properly. Need a little adjustment between music and theater.

@Sir_Corgerus
@Sir_Corgerus 5 күн бұрын
I'm obviously not the guy but I do way too much research so I hope this helps: From your list of subs, the Rythmik may be the better option but the FV15 may be excessive. An FVX12 still does quite well as a vented sub that sounds great in both movies and music especially for its size. Rythmik is really good value for sound quality according to a select few reviewers that I trust, typically beating out SVS in the same price range. Aside from sound quality, you'll have to decide if you need a feature that other subs don't have. You may have to get a home trial to figure that out. If you want a more aggressive subwoofer that still has good detail performance, perhaps look at JL Audio E series subs but they're a bit pricey. For their size they're really impressive.

A few thoughts: - NOT including DSP in the sub means that we as potential purchasers don't have to pay for it. I see that as a good thing, as I'd rather have my AV processor do it anyway. I don't really understand why anyone would wish to do it within a sub, just a dumb place - Class A/B vs Class D on sound quality is still under debate. I currently have an AB, but have owned a Class D. A key point that I found out to my displeasure was having a board failure on my Class D. Class AB amps are well known technology and pretty easy to fix. Class D, nope, get a new board. On my amp, the main chip literally melted - I've never used an SVS sub. How does it deal with input to apply time delay? Is that done in the digital realm? If so, doesn't that mean that it has to digitise an analogue input, before applying the delay and then conducting another conversion back to digital? I'll let you consider the implications of that additional set of steps - It would appear that you missed the real objective of the high level inputs, i.e. to better match the sub to the rest of a stereo system. I've previously owned a REL sub (currently own NO sub), and can happily vouch for it's benefits - Just how loud were you playing it to result in it shaking so much? - If the sub was shaking so much, that's NOT about cabinet bracing, rather the weight of the sub trying to deal with physics. If blu-tak is too much effort, does make me wonder. Additionally, why not do the obvious thing and add mass to the unit? I did with my old REL by stacking some slate chopping boards on top, which not only helped to eliminate that effect and also protected the top from dummies accidentally scratching it Sorry, but whilst I understand the content, the approach and mindset looks to be way off

[I realize this is two years ago] The high level connection does not amplify the signal but it gets a signal complementing your main speakers. In the beginning you did not mention setup and your adjustment of the crossover (you said the response in the area of 130 hz was good, this indicates a too high a crossover level, as well “walking” of the sub and vibration of the glass of water tells that the level of gain you were using was way too high; with my REL S510 I have never seen this.

Sorry to hear you did not have a good experience with the T9X...the finish on mine was spotless on arrival without any scratches...it was easy to integrate...at the end of the day everything is subjective. I like how the REL handles my music ...every company does some marketing spin so don't be fooled and specs are not the be all and end all. You have to rely on your ears. My REL does not move at all for any reasonable noise level( up to 80 db. I just put some high density foam pads under the feet anyway as I have under my amp and CD source. The best advice is go and listen to a sub before buying and there are so many other variables for good sound, the most important of which is your room. REL is good for some folks and not for others. Yes it is 3 expensive but not outrageous.

You should have checked the video to the end, the reviewer goes into detail about the sub's faults, all of which were extremely well reasoned to the average person checking these videos without much of an investment in the products discussed. Another very well made point later in the video is a discussion of several other subs on the market for less that the reviewer finds to be better. You see, the reviewer is not a one trick pony heavily invested in a single product because he saved up his money for that one in particular. Whenever people have many options and can fluently discuss several of them around the same price point or same quality etc then they dont seem to be overly invested in a single product and think its the best. Notice how the Rel name is thrown around as "the best musical sub" maker non stop. Now half the market thinks that because they are the best of the best and your grandma's neighbor told you so, then it must be worth the price. This video got me to check out a few subs I hadnt heard of and I am glad for it. I am not biased due to ownership, so I can hear negative things about Rel and appreciate them. The points made about marketing and how the technology of plugging your sub into some amplifier rather than sending the signal there via RCA make a lot of sense to me and I had already considered this could be a gimmick. Routing a signal that is colored by an amplifier then reamplified by another amplifier doesnt seem like what I am trying to do. It could very well be people love these subs more than any others they have heard, but I personally will be looking at Arendal mentioned in the video. The price for a dual 13.8in(35cm) sub is 2k less than the dual 12in s series I was looking at from Rel, so 2 of them could be had for a mere grand(usd) more than the flagship S series. The flagship Arendal has room correction app with parametric EQ to tune resonant bumps in room along with ability to measure response in room etc. These are powerful arguments and you dismiss them because you already own something. Perhaps you should consider you may be anchoring onto a particular brand and letting the price tag you paid get the best of your ego. Maybe dont be such an "end game" buyer and consider theres a world of different products out there if ya look a little.

Excellent video, I subscribed. Anyway, I think by a musical sub REL means fast acting, which I can see their point. As far as their finish, I never had a problem with it, and find it to be one of the best around. As far as the (i series) compared to the (x series), I find as you did, that the (i series) is more refined cosmetically, aesthetically, and structurally. I have talked to REL on the phone, yes with an actual person, and I found them to be very cordial, and informative. They are obsessed with their speaker output option, and placing the sub in a far corner. I prefer to put the sub or subs closer to the actual main speakers since that make sense, at least to me, instead of nearly in another room. Again great video.

Your amp can make a big difference to how the high level sounds? I use a rotel rmb1585 and using high level it sounds great (T9i). Also my processor doesn't have a low level out, only a LFE out. So I don't have a option for low level out.

I am not sure if the downward fiiring passive radiator is the best design choice. They could have gone for dual opposing 10" PRs instead. But then again, the size of the Ti/Tx series is so small, it's hard to get a proper tuning even using passive radiators. Pressure levels in PR - designs can get really high and hard to keep under control. Rel would disagree with me I guess but I think a main concern about there Ti/x series is looks rather then performance.

I have to agree that so much audiophile stuff is definitely just a money grab, but at then end of the day, if you're happy with how it sounds and you feel like you got it at a good price then that's that. At least that's how I see it. Never heard or owned a REL sub so I can't really confirm or deny anything you really said in this video, but just the few non bs issues like shaking and small quality control seems like enough to think twice before buying one.

I can't vouch for REL subs, but I can say that a lot of this criticism displayed a misunderstanding of some science, and as such was not so convincing. There's some good points in here regarding marketing, but much of the criticism was as bad as the people who speak in favor of the subs.

@andrewz925
@andrewz925 Жыл бұрын
@@propercushty The idea behind using a high level connection like Rel is that your subs are seeing the same signal at the same time as the main speakers, so the system blends together better. If your amp is giving the mains any kind of tone or imparting some characteristic, it'll also give that to the subs so everything matches. Rel also designs the crossover circuit in a purposeful way to make it higher quality. The subs also receive a nice, strong, amplified signal, then you blend in where your mains naturally fall out.

I like the rel rant rubbing it in. lol I saw a rel video before seeing you're video, 2nd time now. I been so close to 98% to buying wasting £ on SVS PB16, but why? My JBL can do a frequency range that shallows down but with some DSP crossover and PEQ tuning can get them at 10Hz to 120Hz as 120Hz is the stopping point for LFE.1. LFE.1 range is 5Hz to 120Hz. Subs are going to find it awkward so that is where I have bass shakers take over at cos more felt than heard cos infersonic is inaudible. Just as high frequencies get past 8KHz the ear frequency range slopes off and so the turning PEQ and all needs to have certain frequency range tuning so the rest of the frequencies below 8Khz are less louder cos we can hear easily hear those frequencies. I can hear few sci-fi sound/fx in a movie Alien 3, 1992 that goes up 18KHz. Music mixes like, jean michel jarre will have a range to 20KHz few youtube videos may manage that some won't depending on what they used to rip the CD but the CD , up to 21KHz that I measured on RTA. Only my Cats can easily and annoying hear that range so easily but human hearing is rubbish compared to my Cats. Cat's range 40Hz to 90KHz it doesn't mean a Cat can't hear 30Hz or feel sense it? So Cats win. Unless got a pet Bat that is 1KHz to 100KHz? What does it matter "we" can't barely hear range once it gets past 8KHz it gets faint and needs to be greatly amplified to notice it as pinching pressure on the ear drum. I wouldn't touch a rel sub with a barge pole. Or any other home cinema made sub cos they never been used at cinemas. I use, JBL professional cinema subs 18" large boxes big sound or scale the size down for the small room but I am more accustomed to hearing/feeling them at cinemas in the past and they often cheap on ebay and all they need is Behrinher DCX2496 DSP loudspeaker management crossover and Behringer NX3000 that is more than enough even a NX1000 would suffice and wouldn't cost the silly daylight robbery prices rel are changing their products or any other greedy home cinema manufacturer to get more of the same thing, only used JBL PA subs are cheaper. It takes x4 or more subs to tango the single mono LFE.1 evenly in frequency once REW has been preformed. But the LCR surrounds have to also provide bass and I don't use bass management cos all the speakers in my room are JBL pro cinema and was cheap compared to say rip off, M&K 150 at £1.5k each daylight robbery, and M&K marketing is scamming the public to make star wars fan boys thinking they used those speakers for mixing star wars. yeah right sure? Only in post editing not for final film mix that is done using JBL professional PA speakers that are same used in cinemas so what they mix there, is same translation to the cinema or my THX home cinema, with real THX cinema in my amp rack. Those tiny M&K 150 wouldn't be able to handle Star Trek 6 opening titles on their own with the amount of bass! JBL PA cinema handle it easily cos the films was mixed on JBL and played back on JBL. Mine handle music at PA levels or calmer level in the dBA on the HF horns 2446 CD , 2380A horn can handle 120dbA which would be deafening and 85dBA peak is more than satisfactory. I heard had smaller JBL for years and wanted PA cinema but prices now have come down somewhat lower, got watch the bay, and know what JBL cinema PA and mine was made in late 80's and like a speaker goes. A speaker is a speaker, it's the crossover that makes the speaker. With DSP crossover I can tune, experiment until I am blue in the face, lol. Yes aware of harmonics when using sine wave and RTA and mic sees the 2nd 3rd 4th 5th and so on harmonics. My JBL used had scratches and they are all placed behind AT screen so as long as they do the proper cinema sound or PA club sound with LP or any other music that I can feel with LP makes me feel dizzy due to the frequency dynamics on the LP, chest feel. Place a coin on the sub does it fall over? if it does its due to internal breaching cos the box has a resonate frequency vibration? Oh so what. So does cars and buses have resonate vibration noises, think about it?
@propercushty
@propercushty 3 жыл бұрын
those jbl pro subs look very cool - the 5628 model caught my eye - but it so huge and needs that external amp - if i had projector screen i'd buy something like these jbl or jtr subwoofer and place behind the screen. I like the pb16 ultra because you get a real sense of headroom - the response at 15hz-40hz is just very clean and powerful..no hint of strain. And you control the dsp from the app so very easy to set up in room and it looks a bit like a big coffee table - in the real world you have to take into account all the variables - if i had unlimited resources and dedicated room, of course i'd be going with pro audio gear Vibrations on the cabinet do matter to some people - some people (believe it or not) use subwoofers as small coffee tables

Digital amps have and are getting better but they generally offer a more "hollow" sounding bass sound, class A/B gives you full rounded bass. I really agree with you about REL branding. 20 logos is waaaay too much! I would prefer the feet to have NO logo, the drivers don't need logos either IMHO because there is a very nice badge on the top. That should be enough! Rolls-Royce cars don't have RR on every door! A discrete RR on the radiator grille is enough! Cabinet moving around the floor: KEF have been solving the problem of unbalanced forces for at least 20 years by having opposing drivers - in the KC62 this is taken to the next level by having one magnetic assembly for both opposing drivers. Theoretically you could compensate for the delay by placing the sub further forward of the main speakers, allowing their sound to travel forward to arrive at the same time the sub makes those waves.

@@damianhaber4890 It arrives tomorrow so follow up with me on Friday. I think for $449 it is a no brainer. I also bought the 4 year warranty via Best Buy. It is very good to buy from them since it is a brick and mortar you can return to or get a full refund 4 years from now if needed. A superior sub is the Rythmik F12 "affordable" version. You can save about $100 if you have your own cabinet. I also bought the KEF KC62- to audition (15 days) via Best Buy $1,500. To me it's meh. Sounds good. Goes low and is fast but not with as much SPL in the low range. It would be excellent for $500. It is going back. I think I will end up keeping the REL 1205. If Best Buy had the F12 I would have gotten that. I don' t like that I would have to mail it back if there is ever an issue. I also doubt it is far better than the 1205. Better, sure but not twice as good and nearly twice the price. $449 is a no brainer. My advice is to get it new with warranty via Best Buy. If you don't love it, return it and get something else. Are you mostly listening to music or home theatre or in what ratio? All these sealed subs are best for music. Also, two 1205's will generally sound better than one in a good sized room. You also have to dial them in and use REW to get them set up correctly (location, crossover, etc.)

Fantastic breakdown re. distortion, inputs, dsp, 'midfi guys' crap, anti-vibration badges and mambo-jambo. RELigion is also briljant 😄👍 Not sure if you got a Patreon channel, but I gladly subscribe if so.

Wow thank you Mike! Finally up to date with my comments - I'm getting to your ones and they're all good (thank god...been a tough one today). I haven't got a Patreon channel mate - I've been thinking about it but honestly I'm not motivated by money for many reasons. I guess one day soon I will have to start it because I can't just keep losing - but right now I am ok. Absolutely gobsmacked, thankful, thrilled that you would consider supporting me with actual money. I'm actually smiling whilst writing this and I feel quite proud. Thanks again :)

@@propercushty Your welcome MDT. I really appreciate your approach and nerve to address the elephant(s) in the room and it shows. Besides that, there's really good info to be found and, imo, well worth the support. To be honest, I have often questioned myself If I would support channels and this is the first time I feel it's really worth , but I get your point. Then again, time and effort comes with a 'price' (besides some free disturbed reactions, lol). Thanks for your insights and keep up the spirit. 👊

@@34332 One thing I will say is at least all the 'disturbed reactions' helps me develop a thicker skin! Trollers don't understand that they actually help me psychologically - sounds very counter-intuitive, but it's true! Thanks again mate :)

I own a T9x and I'm quite happy with it. This video has given me some food for thought, though. I'll definitely shop around more next time. Thanks for the eye-opening rant!

Please don't fall for the smaller drivers are quicker crap, the driver/subwoofer is rather designed well or it is not.

Isn’t the idea of the hi level input to give it the same sound signature as what’s coming out of the amp to help it blend in?

Yes.

Yes. And REL is not the only company that offers the option. Additionally, there are some people with no option for low level inputs. Like a DJ mixer going direct to an amplifier. Small group but it does exist.

If true Hi-fi is what the studios use then you are saying an Atom, Genelic, or Focal sub is the best?
@propercushty
@propercushty Жыл бұрын
i guess the point i was making is if you want the sound to be representative of 'what the producer heard' then the producer probably wouldn't have been using a REL sub. Am I right in assuming that to be an audiophile means you want to hear what the producer heard? .. or has the definition changed...correct me if I'm wrong! If you want to hear something that just sounds good to your ears, then that's fine (i'd call your a melophile rather than an audiophile)....but I also wouldn't pretend that REL's product line is superior to anything else because for some reason professional studios seem to be using completely different gear that heavily relies on DSP to account for the room. The professional standard is certainly not manually crossing over subwoofers by ear with high level speaker cable connection!

@@propercushty You're right I want to hear what the producer heard. I like Jimmy Hendrix, so I guess I need a triple Marshall stack in my family room!

I feel like you're trying to twist things here... Focal products known and used in a studio's are it's pro monitors, not it's subs... Focal is not a subwoofer company. F.e. the Focal dome subwoofer that looks like R2D2 had walking issues too, that's why they have more boxed sub now. The 800V subwoofer was way underpowered etc... that is not where Focal shines... if you're into audio and have tested/heard their products, you just know.
