Rule of thumb for me is if the weld is going to be readily visible I tig, if its not I mig whenever I can. Mig is just so much faster, easier and less finicky. And I’m lazy/impatient. Nice build.

the angled stern is designed to help with reversing, so the water pushed against the back of the boat flows under and not up

Simple rule of thumb I use most of the time when I’m building aluminum boats/boxes/fuel cells shit like that is…. If it’s a inside corner to almost a flat weld I use mig. If it’s a outside corner threw just beyond flat I reach for the tig. Nice build man!! I’m gearing up to build one myself actually. I just yanked the donor motor out of the jetski today! Using what I had which is a slt 780 Polaris. About 90-95 hp. Nowhere near as nice a motor as yours. But should still be fun.

dude i am coming over to try the tig. always wanted one. also why not use the Bridgeport and an indexing jig to do the splines?

cost of the dividing head, tailstock and involute cutters will be about two times more than just sending it off.

Is there a specific shop that you use to re-spline the shaft ?

Yes, Jeremy williams with backwater boats. round trip he had it done in about a week or so, was extremely quick turn around.

Where do I acquire an engine and drive shaft? I am working my own project and am about ready for a drive train. Looks great!

you generally want to find an engine/pump combo from a jetski, you can piece them together ala carte but that normally is a bit tedious with the amount of research and work needed to get everything coupled. Search for kawasaki, seadoo and yamaha jet skis, cut them in half and theres your donor.

My tig machine came months ago but I was waiting on boat parts. I practiced on some mild steel and felt pretty confident. Ordered all my alum and practiced on some of that, turns out tiging alum is VERY Difficult. you may have better luck with your mig experience. I just need a lot of seat time with alum...

Yeah I think I agree! This tig is certainly difficult to figure out. I’ll definitely post what settings work best for me.

@@Localhost127 I was shooting the sht with my neighbour he mentioned that heating all pieces allowed for a cleaner and easier weld. Except you can't use anything that will oxidize the alum or carbon. Aka heat gun or heat stone bricks in a fire and use them to radiate heat tj the parts... Worth a try I figured...

@@robertsinclair one of the main reasons it helps is it evaporates the moisture out of the pores in the aluminum. You can use a propane torch no problem. I Do it all the time.

I don't know if a turbo be good for a small craft. Water is pumped into the exhaust to keep exhaust system cool. Any Water hitting a turbo be bad. If engine area gets to hot. Could lead to engine fires. Just my two cents. Nice build. :)

Water is used to cool motor not exhaust
@danowens7145
@danowens7145 2 жыл бұрын
@@dougmurray510 yes I knew that lol. As the water flows threw the engine block than routed into the exhaust. But I guess it could be different on your machine 🙂
@Mad.Man.Marine
@Mad.Man.Marine Жыл бұрын
@@dougmurray510 actually your both wrong. On a turbo setup you use water “jacketed” exhaust until at least beyond the turbo. As far as water only being in the motor. In fact most jetskis from the factory have water cooled exhaust. Not just the motor. And most of the time somewhere along the system it does in fact entire into the exhaust gas stream.

Man like your work but you need to get some foam padding to lay in the boat because putting your knees on all those sharp edges has got to be killing you also it helps you to work longer in uncomfortable locations. I use to work on riverine assault boats and patrol boats alum hull US Navy boats.

A lot of it is likely gonna be made from scratch, for the steering system I’m still trying to decide if I do a sprint kart pinion or another seastar jet boat helm. I have quite a bit of pieces to sort before that though.
