Here's a few more suggestions for another overused lines supercut... "Yeah, you'd better run!" "It's not what it looks like" "We're not so different you and I" "Is that all you got?" "We've got company!" "We can do this the easy way or the hard way" "You just don't get it do you?" "You look like shit" "There's a storm coming"

bro I really don't like the "we're not so different you and i" one, cuz it's used in a lot of emotional scenes that are supposed to be powerful and demonstrate new found understandings between characters and then they throw in a cliche and ruin the entire thing. It's fine when it's used well, but when it's purpose is to be the powerful moment of realization, I think it's better to have something actually memorable instead of just another one of these.

This happened to me yesterday. Some people annoyed me in a public place where I was waiting for my boyfriend and, thinking they were gone, I started venting rather savagely about them. I then watched them leave. They may have been strangers and in many ways, deserved it, but I still feel terrible now.

Me when I sense my mom right behind me while talking to my sister: “She’s right behind me, isn’t she?”
@piecrumbs99512 жыл бұрын
I have once been in a situation where I was shit talking somebody (not something I do anymore) to a crowd of people, when suddenly the crowd of people's faces went completely nuetral/shocked, and I turned around to see the person I was shit talking standing there in silence. Sadly, I didn't have the comedic ability to say the titular line before turning.
@MorePower86796 жыл бұрын
The best part is when they turn around and face who they were talking about.
@ashketchum62223 жыл бұрын
My favourite use of this is in the South Park movie. Cartman singing "Kyle's Mom Is A Bitch"... and Kyle's mom walks up right behind him while he's getting really into the performance and ignoring Stan's warning, THEN he turns around. "Aw, fuck" doesn't begin to describe it.

@piecrumbs99513 жыл бұрын
If a comedy ever uses this joke it's a pretty good indicator of their laziness, more so for a movie than a tv show. It's just a filler joke you can throw in at any time in any scenario for a cheap laugh, instead of crafting witty, thought out scenarios and humor.
@fightingmedialounge5193 жыл бұрын
Not exactly pie crumbs. A concept isn't inherently lazy, can be that way depending on how it's excuted.
@piecrumbs99513 жыл бұрын
@@fightingmedialounge519 I disagree. Some techniques can be inherently lazy, that's what I think a cliché is. An overused, unoriginal and predictable storytelling convention. The only way to use clichés effectively is through meta-humor or self referential humor. To acknowledge the cliché, build up the audiences expectations, and then subvert them in a humorous way. Futurama did this in the video, when bender said "she's standing right behind me, isn't she?" The audience immediately assumes that the camera is going to pan behind him and show her standing there, listening, only for it to pan in front of bender instead. It only works because it is in direct reference to the cliché. Because the cliché is so predictable and unoriginal, it is a great comedic device to build the audience's expectations on what will happen and immediately defy them in a humorous way. No other example in this video really attempts to do anything funny or creative with the joke, it is a lazy and borrowed trope for a cheap laugh. They're all carbon copies of the exact same joke, delivery, punchline and once you have seen it once you will never laugh at it again. On top of that it is unrealistic. Never ever in my life have I been trash talking somebody only for them to be standing behind me, and if I or anybody else were in that situation it is doubtful that I or they would exclaim "he's standing right behind me, isn't he?" So, it abruptly takes you out of the narrative reminds you that you are watching a tv show, not reality, it is devoid of original, substantive, witty or well crafted humor and the only way to make this cliché (or any other comedic cliché for that matter) funny is to build upon it. On it's own, however, it is inherently harmful to the narrative.
@fightingmedialounge5193 жыл бұрын
@@piecrumbs9951 no, a cliche is LITERALLY a storytelling device, or technique, being used so often with little alteration that they become tire dandy overused. It has nothing to do with being "inherently lazy" and more about coming across as lazy if the idea isn't given new creative life through execution.
@piecrumbs99513 жыл бұрын
@@fightingmedialounge519 That's pretty much exactly what I said. Although we are talking about storytelling and using language to describe the word "cliché," literal definitions are not much help as both language and storytelling are human inventions and thus the definition of the word cliché is maliable to the user if the word. But the most agreed upon definition is the one you cited, I agree. Clichés are lazy if they are not built upon. Like I said, Futurama used this specific cliché effectively by building upon the structural base that it provides. But, with no addition to any given cliché it is definitely unoriginal and by extension a lazy storytelling technique. I would also argue that if you add to a cliché (like futurama did) it is no longer a cliché since it becomes original. So I stand by the claim that it is "inherently" lazy, such as to say that if a cliché is used it is necessary that it must be unoriginal.
