You can pry my reverb from my cold dead hands Mister Danger!!! Seriously - it's the only way I can impress my wife. Turn up the reverb and wang out a couple pentatonic licks and she thinks I sound like Blind Man Boxcar Billy. Its my one move that never fails me.

Great advice as always and although I like to think I am fully aware of these I still have to focus on them. All of this stuff definitely comes with experience. Man I have an SE DGT also and it is a friggin sweet guitar for such a low price.

Just found your channel. Great stuff! To me, there's no more honest way to practice than with just a guitar and amp. You learn smoothness, dynamics, expression and musical storytelling without all of the effects to hide behind. It's the best way to grow as a player. Basic amps like my Champs or Pro Juniors reveal everything, and make me pay attention and try harder. Thanks for the channel! Cheers!

Couldn't agree more, there's nothing like getting the fundamentals down. Love my pedals but going direct into any one of my amps is a great way to find my true baseline.

Slapback and doubling delays have replaced my reverbs lately and I'm really happy with my tone first and the immediacy of what I play... As for the rest, great advices!

I’m definitely guilty of too much gain but since I’ve been watching your channel, I’m really trying to tone it down and finding out I have some cleaning up to do lol. The other crutch I have is using too much delay because I want to sound like Neilal Schon - but I can’t lol. Another great video Alex keep up the great work

I have a '62 Chris Stapleton Princeton. No reverb in the amp but it has a tube biased tremolo. Good God, I never need to go back to reverb. Plugging straight in gives all the feels and movement you need.

About the reverb… interesting timing because I was talking to Chad Rupp who hosts a weekly blues jam here in Portland about this very thing. He plays bone dry and sounds great. He wants nothing to hide behind. He shared his amp hack too: he rolls the bass & treble *all the way off* forcing the amp to show its midrange. His Two Rock amp sounds the same as his Vibroverb doing this… lots of natural compression that sounds very squishy and doesn’t hurt the ears of the audience or band mates even though it’s loud. I think he controls his minimalist gain just with guitar vol knob. I’ve started practicing that way already.

Great advice! Sometimes it also helps to play things if possible, clean while learning the lick or song. Definitely no place to hide! You can introduce effects later once you have the lick down clean.

Ahhhhh vibrato on chords. Yes. Definitely need to reduce that. I’ve noticed that I’ve developed that habit from guitars that are slightly out of tune and feeling the need to cover it up by throwing vibrato all over chords. Insane playing, as always. So good.

Great tips. My favorite is not bending the tonic. Sounds really off. What's amazing is that you sound like a totally different player after applying your tips. Very nice. Playing on fewer strings also validates some of my shortcuts. So maybe I'm not cheating after all. I was never worried about muting the high e-string, but still trying to understand the thumb over on strings 6 and 5. Now I'll worry less. My question is about Reverb. But also the difference between practicing and "performing." Even for an audience of one, yourself. I learned the general idea from Tomo Fujita - your practice sound needs to be unforgiving - then forgot it when I learned more about Reverb and Delay. A studio guy from Nashville said you should play with more of both - I never played with too much - then mix a lot of it out with a mix knob on your pedal. It's like having a bed underneath your guitar tone. Both seem to give it body, which in theory should be different than masking. I've found the technique added Hall to my Spring or Plate preferences. You can also throw in a Chorus. I'm shooting for a Garcia/Mayer kind of tone , so I don't play with much gain. Ironically, I've tried mixing in an SD-1, which Garcia used, and found a usable tone, then lost it in tweaking. But mired in the tone search, I find myself playing pedal board, using riffs I know to search for and organize tone. Your tip reminded me I need to spend part of my time getting back to basics. Thanks.

Hey Mike thanks for the thoughtful comment. As for reverb and delay I feel that it is great for live show but the underlying tone and technique sometimes can be masked through effects and gain. That being said, practicing with your live show sound is importsnt too but imo 90% of practice should be with very little reverb and delay.

i never use reverb live, there's always plenty in the room sound. It just muddies up the tone and cut of your guitar.
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios 3 ай бұрын
Right? Depending on the room I use very little reverb unless it's a specific part of the song

@@SuperdangerStudios maybe a bit abrupt. I'd like to say that i mostly play rock in bad rooms or worship in big church buildings with usually bad sound. I am about to buy another one to go with my Friedman IR-D going direct for small cafe gigs and practice, as it can add a little air to a clean tone. Each to their own ear, but, i find my ear prefers a dryer sound live usually.

Very good observations, Sir, but I do like a good reverb. I own 4 Reverb pedals and currently living nicely with a SLÖ by Walrus Audio on my board. Reverb is the best thing that happened to guitar tone. If guitars would get sad, reverb would be there to make them laugh. Using it over the top will sound stupid and your band mates will hate you, but used enough.... oh maaaaan. I watched your looping video and made a backing track with 3 different reverb types, clean guitar, different eq settings and it sounds heavenly. The more gain, the less reverb i use because it starts to mudd the sound out and the guitar gets lost.

Speaking of playing less, this is one of my all-time favs by Larry Carlton - take a listen if you have time, it's worth it: Precious Love (Al Jarreau & Randy Crawford) - Casino Lights 1981 Actually, I feel that this hits the mark on many if not all of your points, Alex. Just something I wish I told myself when I was younger. It's a bold move musically and doing it by accident is something new musicians need to be aware of.
