It seemed weirdly academic to me in this particular comment since you usually see both in papers, when in computer text you see i.e's or e.g's in brackets or parenthesis alone. In any case .,'s would have been more casual. It's not incorrect but rather inappropriate, like the "incorrect" usage of dinner utensils. They all correctly get the job done, but the certain usage of some is less hoi polloi
