Today I take a look at a non-RPG, Shadow of Destiny!
Shadow of Destiny is not an RPG. It’s not exactly rare, or expensive, or beautiful, but stick around anyway because Shadow of Destiny is an experience that I suspect many RPG fans might enjoy anyway. Shadow of Destiny, also known as “Shadow of Memories” outside of North America, is a relatively obscure adventure game written and directed by Junko Kawano.

Great game. The soundtrack is so bizarre, it mixes perfectly with the wierd visuals and voice acting. Whole game is like a twilight zone episode and feels like I am running around a model village. Creeps me out and I love it.

Shenmue with time travel? And more than one ending instead of just an endless cliffhanger? Sounds great to me
@pite9
@pite9 4 жыл бұрын
That's very generous. The mood and character interactions and fundamental game design is Shenmue-esque, but it's very raw and noticeably low budget in every aspect. But I enjoyed the game for what it was and completed a few endings. The story is interesting enough to draw you in, quick paced, and the time travelling is interesting. I like the sporadic use of subtle humour. The mechanics have some flaws but works decently for the most part.

@@SuperDerek i keep thinking back on this one every couple months too. it's like you said. it's not the prettiest, it's not the most awesome gameplay. the story isn't the best thing ever either. and yet it did something to many of us that keeps us wanting to go back to it. even jim sterling keeps bringing it up every now and then xD i remember going through the whole ordeal. finishing the game. just to get a superbad ending that made the whole thing pointless. little teenage me was mind blown and impressed at the same time!

It might have been a good idea to mention that there are multiple ways to solve some sequences. (I.e., you could use a metal sign or a frying pan to armor yourself against a stabbing.) But you are correct about the potential for RPG lovers to like this. It was the case for me.

Ah, this brings back memories. It's funny, I brought up the base of the storyline to my English teacher in High School. She was so intrigued by it that she turned that into our writing assignment! Basically, the idea was for us to prevent our deaths in story form. What's interesting about this is that a girl in the class took a different approach to it... By writing a story about how she was going to kill us! She warned everyone ahead of time of this and I think it's understandable why. Amazing how seeing this review reminded me of this. Also, before I get asked, it was just a story and nothing came of it. If anything, she just took a different approach to the assignment.

As someone who found this at my rental place, the time travel aspect really appealed to me. Part of me was excited to advance each stage/level/whatever so that I could figure out how I would die and how to stop it. I think the fire was the one that was most intense for me. In the end, I feel the unlockables you got for 100% on the PS2 were the weakest link. Okay, I did everything... now I can watch the Japanese trailer... oh joy, oh look, the picture on the title screen is now Dana and Marguerite not Eike... Yeah, not worth it.

Tried to play this on my PS2 for a review last October. This is the ONLY game I've never been able to get a capture card to work with. Had to use an emulator for the footage. But it is an RPG. There's nothing in the words "Role Playing Game" that even implies combat. It's a game that you role play a character in. I personally wish there were more good non-combat games. Killing stuff gets pretty boring for me real fast, unless the game has great combat mechanics, and even then it won't be long before I want something more fun to do.
@SuperDerek
@SuperDerek 4 жыл бұрын
When it comes to the topic of whether or not something is an RPG, this topic always comes up of, "what is an RPG" and I think the elephant in the room is that "RPGs" by in large are not described by what the genre is called. Instead for the most part it's what we call sci-fi and fantasy games with leveling mechanics and an emphasis on storytelling. Outside of the pen and paper RPGs, there aren't ways to really play out a role in games of the genre. It all gets pretty messy and convoluted. But perhaps what I could have said in this review is "It doesn't adhere to the gameplay elements and aesthetics typically associated with the Role Playing Genre" but that's much more of a mouthful. :) If you want to see me ramble on about the subject for a while, here's an older video of mine on the subject: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4OxgYCimb6LodE
