Your opinion about Luc is honestly shocking. Not only was it a great twist but it made so much sense when you know the lore. Luc is a clone, forced to live forever with no freedom. His actions were to fight against fate, he wasn't an evil villain, he was a victim.

I played Suikoden 3 for one night during a sleepover at a friend's house. It seemed like the most fantastic game in the world to me at the time. I'm kind of scared to give it a proper revisit as an adult because there's no way it will live up to my memories

@@Mscape7 Agreed. Suikoden 3 was a disappointment after the quality of the first two. It's not terrible, but the egregious amount of backtracking kills the adventure.

@@acidwizard6528 It's such a shame. They still had the original creator, and they had a rock solid base thsnks to the first two games. I think a smaller time gap between them, plus a far tighter story, plus 2d graphics, the return of 2's minigames, more retuening characters, and a more traditional battle and war system would have saved it. But that is um a lot.

We didn't get Suikoden 3 in Europe, so I had to make do with reading all 11 volumes of the manga.. Incidentally, I recommend checking it out. Its basically the games entire story without the grinding or traipsing across the grassland plains.

I will thanks. The game is very poor, but the Americans at the time made it sound like it was fantastic. I got a chipped ps2 and imported it - which cost over £100 - and never even made it halfway.

The Suikoden series for me has always been about finding those 5 other perfect members of your party out of potential pool of 108. In 1 and 2 that meant finding the people able to equip the most powerful runes, with the most charges. So at first I rather disliked 3 especially not being able to directly control all 6 characters (one of the first reasons I ever tried suikoden). Until I realized what determined power in that game wasn't really the runes, but the skills. Then I really started to get into it, and being able to hand pick 3 full parties for most of the game (and last dungeon iirc) was all the better. I remember at one point when all three parties finally meet up I actually had too many favorite characters that had some skill at S rank (or whatever) and had a hard time deciding who to leave out.

I read the manga for it (My high school managed to get ahold of the whole series, probably because i was one of the few students to request anything on the library request list, and i wouldn't stop requesting it til they got ahold of it.). The Villain thing isn't localization error, the villain's motive was just really abstract and kinda crazy, even by Luca Blight standards. Though credit where credit is due, the reveal of who the villain is shook me as a kid when i first saw who it was (I played both games before it so i knew the gravity of the reveal.). War System was disappointing though (Not as much as 4's though, I think 2 and 5 did it best.), When i lead an army, i want to see a bunch of troops fighting, not..........8. Which makes the lack of games since the PS2 era REALLY sad, cause those battles could look SICK on modern consoles, especially with the Fox engine which the company owns. An interesting thing about the Character models; Go look at each of the Male Characters and compare them in terms of build, same with females. They actually differ besides height and appearance. Not to mention there are HUNDREDS of unique animations used in as little as one scene, Characters will have different postures when sitting as every sits differently, lots of little things you wouldn't notice without looking for it. Is it as good as Suikoden 2? No, but it's still damn good. ......I miss Suikoden. Someone did make an RPG Maker game (A really good one, with lots of custom assets and shit.) that's a love letter to Suikoden called 'Exit Fate'. Recommend you all check it out.

I actually quite enjoyed this game and the Suikoden series remains one of my favorites. Always wanted to learn more about or have a game set in Holy Harmonia... too bad that will never happen. Also loved that the game was less about saving the world from an outside threat but more about the effects of war and political maneuvers.

See for me 3 will always beat 2 and 1 for its more positive approach. There is a time and place for bleak and they did it and had it in Suikoden 1 and 2... so I did not want it for 3 as well. I just liked everything about 3 better from game play to seeing the story thru 3 different points of view I just found it amazing.

Yeah, I remember that part with the Golem in Geddoe's chapter. I guess that was Konami trying to soft lock you from going back that way so you could do another part of the story first, but what a cheap way to go about doing it. It's like getting put in time out for not playing the game how they wanted you to play it.

Great vid for an overall good game! One thing you missed, though, is that this game has the best bonus when you recruit all 108 characters in the entire series! I don't know if you managed to get 'em all, but if you didn't, you unlock a bonus chapter showing the big bad's side of the story. I can't say I remember how much bonus insight you get into his motivations, as I only played this game when it came out, but I remember it is a few hours long, which is actually pretty cool!
@SuperDerek
@SuperDerek 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Chrono Pat, I definitely did get all 108 stars, and it really didn't seem to be as big of a deal to see the antagonist's side of things, compared to changing the entire endings of the first two Suiko games. To be honest, the final chapter felt to restrictive, and offered very little challenge. It did give a bit more closure following the events of the game, but I don't think that the provided closure needed to be tucked away behind the 108 stars challenge, you know? My perspective on the ending might have been skewed though since by the time I got the special ending, I was pretty much ready to put the game down for a while. :-P

I don't know what you're talking about when mentioning the main antagonist, but his reasons for doing what he was doing was clear as day. There weren't any huge leaps of logic. I also completely disagree that the game was clumsy and not as good as the previous titles. The battle system was fine and there really wasn't much difficulty in beating bosses. They added casting interruption to the casters and their partner was there to help shield them while casting. I liked that they added friendly fire to go along with the lore of the main rune in the game. Also, why didn't you mention the introduction of the skills system that was a large part of how characters performed in battle?
@isleofredemption

The changes to game mechanics were what largely turned me off to 3, but almost the entire cast suffered from the Eight Deadly Words: "I don't care what happens to these characters". Neither side of the war was very likable, I liked Geddoe but the official canon makes Hugo the one who matters (in the manga, anyway), and the villains... don't get me started. I hated them, but for all the wrong reasons. "Oh, you thought you won? Well, we're gonna make you fight a scripted battle, then steal your stuff again."... I know people liked it, but I just didn't get any good feels from it. I'd just hold out til 5 when we're back to normal.

Jason Escoto the first time I played S3, I hated it and couldn't see past all the changes. I picked it up again a few months later and gave it a chance and ended it loving it. For me it's the 2nd best in the series with 5 being a close 3rd. I would say it's definitely worth it, and you do start to see that it does feel like part of the series, especially when you start seeing familiar faces from suikoden 2 show up. I also just loved the skill system, it made trying new characters and leveling them up feel more controlled and exciting. Having 3 main characters was a neat addition and they're all really fleshed out! Just my thoughts

Finally someone with no biased opinion! A lot of people said that this game is a hidden gem or on the same level of quality as the first and second Suikodens! A lie! This game has good parts, but teh fact that you have to travel so many hours through giant maps was just a fuc*** stupid idea. Seriously, you get the teleport thing in the last quarter of a game. By that time, almost everything that I liked about the game was almost destroyed. I finished the game, and I have to say that the first 2 gamea are way, WAY better.

Going to have to disagree. 3 is my favorite, I thought it was a very ambitious game and I personally thought it was great. Yea travel can be tedious but that doesn't bother me but I can understand why it would others. Been a long time since I've played this game but I remember it was my favorite. I liked how characters had specific skills and prowess in those skills, made each character feel a bit more unique in comparison to the previous games.

Suikoden III isn't a bad game, but it is the worst Suikoden game, which stinks since it is the more recent in the timeline.. I actually enjoyed IV more than III even though I think it gets the worst rap of them all. I know it sucks you only get 4 characters in battle, but I thought the music was better than III's and I really liked the nautical theme and the idea of building up a ship and crew instead of just repeating the castle/mansion thing again. My Suikoden order would probably be: II - V - I - IV - III

About your last sentence, you know, that there haven't been similar politically driven war narratives in JRPGs after that: Actually Falcom did all that with their Legend of Heroes: Trails franchise/series, but to an even much much bigger extent. I'm sure many people have recommended this to you already as it is the currently most hyped JRPG franchise among JRPG fanatics (and the fanbase can be very vocal about the franchise), but if you haven't already, you owe yourself playing Legend of Heroes. I played the Suikoden games in my youth and never though i would get anything like it anymore, but when i played Trails in the Sky, 5 years ago it changed my entire perception and expectations on complex politically driven stories in JRPGs. There is a very good video that can explain the main draw to the series much better than i ever could: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipKxY3pjdqqXb7M

For once, I have to disagree with the notion that Suikoden 3 is clumsy and not as good as 2. Personally, in some ways, I found 3 to be better than 2, mostly in story. The graphics I can forgive, and the music was great, if a lot more mellow and ambient. As much as I love 1 and 2, I don't care for the hardcore fans of 2 that proclaim it's the greatest game ever made and 3 was just abysmal or forgettable. I can understand those sentiments if we're talking about 4 or even 5, as those are plenty forgettable and not that great. But 3 was the most different and interesting of the trilogy, and the world building was as excellent as always. Also, the antagonists are much more understandable and sympathetic than Barbarossa/Windy or Luca Blight ever were.

I really identified w/ the villain's of this game, so much so it made me wish there was an option to join up w/ them because based in the evidence presented I felt like they were actually correct in what they were trying to do. Even if they didn't always have the most noble methods. I also think there was at least one pretty impactful death in the game that really got me invested in at least 2 of the main characters story. In fact my biggest complaint about the game is how disconnected the 3rd character's chapters were from the main narrative until much later in the game. Every time I had to play as him it felt like a slog and would make me stop playing for days at a time because I was so uninterested in what he was doing. The most fun I had w/ the game though was actually the 4th character's mini chapters where I got to build up my castle w/ my butler and overly devoted knight wannabe.

Oof... this review was a little tough to watch. Not because it was bad -- in fact, it was quite good -- but because it reminded me of all of the things about Suikoden III that I had forgotten. I really like Suikoden, and Suikoden II is possibly my favorite RPG of all time. I remember when S3 came out, I dove into it and practically marathoned it until the end, and I told myself that I liked it, but I remember feeling like I had to push myself through at some points, and it just didn't keep my attention like the earlier games did. I haven't played through it again since it came out, despite playing S1&2 multiple times, and remembering all of the things I had forgotten makes me realize that I really just didn't like S3 very much. I still like the overall story and seeing what happens to many of the characters from the previous games, but it's just not as well directed as they were, and the gameplay and graphics are distinct downgrades. S5, though, that's still a great game. It doesn't fix *all* of the problems that S3 had, but I think it's almost as good as 2 was.

Don't remember much of the story other than it being pretty good. IMO what the game did have is god-tier character designs. I never thought the battle system was hard at all. Maybe 1-2? deaths the whole game.

You should try reading the manga for this game, I have really enjoyed it and it gives you more of the emotion that is understandably lacking in the game from the digital limitations of its day.

Suikoden V was way too easy (even moreso than II), but the quality of the storytelling and mechanics were worthy of the Suikoden franchise, which is not something I say lightly. Also, the voice-acting of the game was exemplary, which is a rarity for JRPGs in the PSX/PS2 era.

I'd personally sat that Suikoden IV was by far the worst in the series, V was back on form and a worthy title in the series. I'd argue that it (V) was the second best game in the series after II. That said, I wouldn't say any of the games in the series are particularly difficult.

This may be an odd assertion, but I almost feel like this game started development on the PSone and was moved to the PS2 part way through. A lot of the issues it seems to have pertaining to being 3D feel like they're "PSone issues" If that makes any sense
@SuperDerek
@SuperDerek 7 жыл бұрын
It totally makes sense. I think it's because it's mostly the same team behind Suiko 1, 2, and 3. While most teams during PS1 console's life-span were going through that awkward transition phase into polygons, this team was refining their 2D skills. It wasn't until the PS2 that the Suikoden team started learning to work in 3 dimensions. That's why I think it feels like it had a lot of PS1-style problems. It's clumsiness due to their collective inexperience. At least, that's my best guess. :)

I remember being disappointed, even annoyed with this game at first. Music was in a different style than previous games, worse. Graphics were suddenly more colourful and silly. It felt off. It didn't feel like Suikoden at all. Gor until the 1st death if a character... ;) I remember how that 1st death in the game on one hand was if course heart wrenching, but on the other gave me a huge relief and satisfaction with the feeling that it IS a Suikoden game after all! lol

Calling this game clumsy but still lovable is a good way to put it. I hated it the first time I played it, but many years later tried it again with an open mind and wound up enjoying it. Why does Derek act like Suikoden IV and V didn't exist though? IV has its own problems but V overall was solid.
@SuperDerek
@SuperDerek 7 жыл бұрын
Oh I know they exist, IV was actually the first Suikoden game I ever played. But I usually only review games in the context of their release, and therefore only make direct comparisons to the games contemporaries and their predecessors. Also, I figured summer was over, and the third entry was a good place to end the Summer of Suikoden since within the series it’s the latest entry in the timeline, since IV and V were prequels. I’ll definitely review the other entries, probably in the next Summer if Suikoden, next year. :)

I meant to respond sooner, but I never found the opportune time to do so. All I mostly was going to say is that your reasoning does make sense there. I was positive that you knew of IV and V game just you didn't reference them at all is what I found odd. I've watched your stuff in the past and you have a good approach to a lot of games and they are easy to watch and encouraging. I'm sure I commented randomly in the past to some others. Well have a good weekend!

Wait, what? You actually _liked_ the music? I did not see that coming. I have mixed feelings about this game, but my criticisms aren't as harsh as some. In fact, I really enjoyed Suikoden 3 back in the day and even appreciated the story and what it was going for. But damn, I always thought the music was forgettable trash. The first two games has such great and memorable sound tracks. Even Suikoden 1, despite being my least favorite, still had great music. This game, however, has boring elevator music. It doesn't evoke any emotion at all. It's absolutely terrible. I'm sorry to go off on such a tangent, I just don't get how anyone can like the music.

I agree 100%, even the good themes (like "Blade") are subpar themes that are saved by one exceptional portion or are more "catchy" than they are well-composed (like Chisha Village).
@SonofTiamat
@SonofTiamat 6 жыл бұрын
As soon as you said "Blade" I knew exactly what theme you were talking about, even though I didn't know it was called Blade. It was the only battle theme that had any feeling to it, and even then it still sounds rather tepid. I'm just glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about the music; I was starting to worry.

My least favorite Suikoden, I even preferred Suikoden IV which is garbage. Suikoden III is nowhere near as bad as IV but after the second game it pales in comparison. Everything is painfully average, the scenario, the characters, the gameplay, the music, the graphics. It would be okay for some random rpg but as a sequel to Suikoden II it wasn't enough. Suikoden IV was really really bad, but somehow it felt like it was no ambition besides being a super average rpg, (so not that disappointing) when Suikoden III had this amazing opening and ambitious narration that made you think the story would be epic and super dramatic. But it's not, the game is boring gameplay and story wise. The fact that I thought Suikoden IV was kinda funnier to play shows how low my expectations sank after III.

I found it incredibly bland in every way, gameplay, story, characters, graphics,music. I honestly cant say anything good about it. I don't hate it but I certainly don't like it either. Besides the fact that the map is an ocean and that you have a ship in place of your base, the game doesn't try to do anything special. It's simply lazy. Even if I don't like Suikoden III either, I can see they wanted it to be great. I feel nothing from Suikoden IV.
