I'll never forget getting Parasite Eve as a Christmas present in 1998. I was only 10 years old and since the game takes place during Christmas it really had a timely impact. Replayed it in 2023 and honestly it holds up so well. The police station stage where you are trying to catch up with the dog before it hurts the kid is masterfully done. There is a good rom hack of this game that improves the fonts in case anyone who legally owns the game already is interested :)

As a kid I wanted the biggest games, with the most side content. As an adult, 20h RPG games are my absolute jam. Saga Frontier is my favorite short RPG, but I consider each story seperate. You can beat a story in 4-12 hours. Mario RPG is truly one of the best weekend RPGs, can easily beat everything in about 2 regular days of gaming.

Oh man you gotta say more about Musashi! That game never felt that short to me as a kid, but I loved it! You can throw your sword and absorb abilities of nearby enemies temporarily which helps shake up combat! There are also tons of villagers and side quests to do along the way as well as collectible action figures for every character and enemy. Some of these are missable, and you can choose to either keep them in the packaging or open them up to see a few different "actions" for each one. So much fun!!!

I think your choice for No.1 was fantastic. With so many padded out games these days, indie developers have created many sweet gems that don’t take over your busy life or your tight bank balance. I prefer the Switch over the Steam Deck (more compact and cheaper) and the Eshop sales and key sites are great for it. Plus you get gold coins back to put towards your next purchase. All the best.

Brave Fencer Musashi is one of my faves on this list. Very accessible game that has aged better than most action games on PS1. I recently started playing The Vagrant (or Sword of the Vagrant) which is a 2D action RPG similar to Odin Sphere. Usually goes on sale for like $0.79 and is beatable in under 10 hours I think. Ys Origin is the best game to get into the Ys series, and is beatable in 10 hours, though you will likely want to do a second and third playthrough for the other endings. Ys Ark of Napishtim and Ys Oath in Felghana are also beatable in under 20 hours. That's all I got right now.

Great idea for a list. I think people generally judge games too harshly when they’re “too short.” While I enjoy longer rpgs, I can definitely appreciate a shorter experience that delivers quality in other areas. Sometimes I just want that game I can finish up in a few day, and it’s tough to consistently find new RPGs to fit that.

@@martincastaneda8574 Well, the Europe part was sarcasm. Sales for most games in Europe outside of sports games were usually far lower than in the US, especially when it came to JRPG's. Had it come out in Europe it might have sold like 50K more at best. But that sequel likely did mean the end of the franchise. They hardly marketed it and it was very poorly received, even by fans. And most fans didn't even know a sequel exists (still don't actually). I didn't find out until a few years after actually.

Illusion of Gaia made me happy because I did beat it in a day onxe. Seeing Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure made me squeal happily! And the mention of Cat Quest, thank you! If I had to add to your Indie list, I would add Athenian Rhapsody. The creator of this game was stunned that people had already beaten the game so quickly so that should give you an idea about how short it is. Of course I will say that if you played how I did, it will take more than 20 hours but that's just because I was determined to find the True ending and that took me three separate playthroughs all about 8 hours each. Only my Lullaby playthrough took me five hours. But if the one playthrough is all you want at first, you will beat it pretty quickly, about 5 to 9 hours depending on play style. I'd also give a mention to Underhero. Underhero came out after Undertale, but it's not the same game type. What I really like about this game is takes the usual storyline we know and turn it on its head, as we play as a lowly minion to the Evil King, Lord Stitches. But when a.... *Ahem* certain incident caues the legendary blade Elizabeth IV to be in our hands, she chooses us as the next hero! Also special mention to chapter 4, going against my expectations further. I won't say more than that. Play the game yourself if you haven't already!

10.) Secret of Mana - Even to this day I still haven't had a chance to play the original game or the remake but hopefully one of those days I can finally make it happen. 9.) Illusion of Gaia - I do have this game completed and permanently retired. I do appreciate how great of an action rpg this game is. It's got a nice sense of transitional difficulty and I do appreciate the game for it's very dark and depressing storyline from time to time. 8.) Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars - I do have the switch version of this game completed and permanently retired. I'm still working on perfecting the 100 jumps requirements for the snes version but this game will always be a timeless classic and a great starter rpg for kids who want to get into turn based rpgs. 7.) Parasite Eve - A game that my wife absolutely loves and a game that I do have completed and permanently retired. This is a great rpg that isn't much of a time sink if you plan on playing the base game, but there is enough post game content to keep the game enjoyable and challenging if you decide to do the Chrysler building. 6.) Crystalis - I absolutely adore this game and it's probably going to be in my top 20 games for the nes. This is another game I do have completed and permanently retired. This is just a great enjoyable nes game with such a wonderful level of progression and it has a surprisingly amount of depth with regards to its gameplay. 5.) Brave Fencer Musashi - A game that I do own but i haven't had an opportunity to play yet. 4.) Live-A-Live - A game that I do not own so therefore I haven't had an opportunity to play yet. 3.) Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure - I do own this title for the ps1 and the nintendo DS and I did play a little bit of it but I didn't invest a lot of time into it but I certainly hope to change that since it's such a heartfelt humorous adventure. 2.) Panzer Dragoon Saga - I do own this title for my sega saturn but I still haven't had a chance to play it yet. I'm surprised that the game is as short as it is especially for something that has 4 discs. 1.) I haven't had much time to invest in a lot of the indie rpgs. Some of them do have my interest but I can just never find the time to play them and since I don't keep up with a lot of current gaming trends I have no idea when any of these games gets released, but at least with your number 1 selection - it gives me a rough idea of which titles to watch out for and eventually give them a try. Koudelka - It is a game that I do own but I still haven't had much of a chance to play it myself. I think it's a good video to be perfectly honest Derek, sometimes time can be a luxury in our lives so it's nice to find those titles that aren't huge time sinks that can be respectful to your free time and balance your gaming life with your other responsibilities. Even though it's nothing new for me to put anywhere between 100 to 200 hrs into completing a jrpg - but even I'll admit it's nice breath of fresh air to play and complete something relatively on the short side. I do prefer my jrpg length to be around the 25 to 60 hr mark but regardless if the game is short or long, as long as it's enjoyable that is all that really counts.

Same here. That dollar per hour figure used to be a selling point for me too. Now that my time is so limited, I realized that the time I spend on games are _also_ a cost, not a return. The return we get from games are the joy, memories, and experiences we take with us, and we just _hope_ those are proportional to the time and money we spend on acquiring them.

Love this list because I feel like most games are too long. ☺️ Also, when you said, no not "The" Edge, I expected a cut to Final Fantasy IV. 😂 Great video!!

I'm surprised Square-Enix hasn't done a remake of the Parasite Eve series. I would _love_ a remake of Brave Fencer Musashi.

I've played a few, own a few on my backlog, and have never heard of a few. That makes this a great list! Some other short ones I would add are Mega Man Battle Network 1 (13.5 hours) and 2 (19.5 hours)

Ah, Koudelka. A fine choice if it weren't for the abysmally drawn out combat stretches.

Well, I would have found some way to fit Dragon Quest 1 on the list, and I probably would have slotted Boot Hill Heroes in somewhere as well. But overall, a solid list.

I’m saddened to think that the last time I played Parasite Eve and Brave Fencer Musashi-years ago-may have actually been the true last times I played them…c’mon Squeenix look out for your homies

One of these days I'd love to try Koudelka simply because it's the predecessor to Shadow Hearts and I've never gotten to play it.

It holds up! And getting to know Koudelka in her prime will probably be pretty fun for fans who recognize her from SH. In some ways, it feels like a higher quality release, but lacks the signature goofiness you might remember from the SH series. :)

I'd recommend Dragon valor on the ps1. Can beat it under 10 hours or less, but there's a bunch of replay value, and it's a fun action rpg platformer

brave fencer was my absolute jam as a youngester! its how i ended up a huge fan of anything miyamoto musashi and his story. they made a "sequal" to it, but it wasn't recieved well and we just stopped seeing anything else about musashi from square. if anything, i'd love to see a remake of this, but we know square's only focus is final fantasy.....so much so, it's being ran into the ground.
