i mean maybe Reinhard is gay, and in love with Kircheis. it's pretty clear Kircheis true love is Annerose, and her telling him at a young age to please take care of Reinhard, + Reinhard's ambition, Kircheis is fully devoted to him. hence why Reinhard apologizes to her at the end, for being selfish and 'borrowing him,' as he knew Kircheis was going to marry his sister...

@@dwyurr it’s a bit complicated because everything has to be implied and with coded innuendo instead of overtly, but I think Kircheis did love Reinhard romantically, and was attracted to Annerose initially. But I don’t think Kirchies’s feelings about Annerose were reciprocated by her/can’t work out because of their circumstances, her desire to be outside of politics and the aristocratic lifestyle, and his obligation/promise to be by Reinhard’s side. The whole thing was kind of a love triangle with agape, Eros, and Philia all mixed in, but even when Annerose withdrew from it, Reinhard and Kircheis definitely loved each dearly.

So, a character's traits would be implied with opaque subtext called "queer coding", expressed in hints rather than explicit declarations or outright physical intimacy. It's found just about everywhere if you know what to look for. Secondly, LoGH's historical references and the real-life figures Reinhard is based on were also probably gay. A conquerer that expanded his empire and took over the known world with a male companion that he was very close to in his early 20's-that's Alexander the Great and Hephaestion. A German monarch who's prowess in warfare and enlightened political stance led him to establish what would become the unifying political entity of Germany-that's Fredrick the Great. Both of them were gay, and Reinhard resembles them greatly. Like Reinhard, they understood their political roles required them to have children and families for the purposes of inheritance and continuity, so they took wives-the notion of marrying a man wasn't even on the table. Reinhard paired up with Hildegaard because he had a sense of honor and understood he would need to have an heir himself-he didn't see his love for Kircheis as getting in the way of that, and if he were alive, Kircheis would probably want him to do that too. Don't be unrealistic-if LoGH had been more explicit in showing R and K's real relationship, in the time and place it came from, it would've been labeled as Yaoi and confined to that ghetto, if not just shunned and ignored entirely, even though it doesn't have anything in common with most of that genre, and romance is not the prime focus of the story. If you watch the series again, and think more deeply, you'll find a lot of queer stuff going on, not just between them. Open your mind so you don't get stuck in thinking that love has to be in-your-face or it doesn't exist. Imagine the two of them were a hetero pair-would anyone doubt that they were a couple then? Would the stuff that happened between them and what they did be looked at as anything else but love?
