I really like the detail of Oberstein protecting Reinhard in the OVA because is a really good set-up for the behavior of the character in the rest of the series. He is not looking for power or replace Reinhard as his number two: he just makes what is the most rational decision that would benefit the larger number of people.

Besides, Kircheis still a competent military commander why Oberstein would want to get rid of him? The whole maneuver seemes pretty dangerous because Reinhard could have been killed just to get rid of Kircheis

The TV anime removing the subtle move Oberstein did removes some pretty important insight about him. As viewers, at the end of season 1, we didn't know whether Oberstein's motivations were true. When he throws himself in front of Reinhard, his true intentions are opaque. Pretty good direction, especially considering this scene wasn't about Oberstein. It was a detail that enhanced the experience.

Actually not really... It was never in the original novel, it is obviously not in the author's intention, also both ways it is really good, but they both portray two different aspects of the character. Edit: The scenes are both well directed neither one is better than the other, and the comparison is just based on bias if anything, because obviously everyone who read the novel first would prefer the remake's take, and everyone who watched the original OVA first would prefer it instead.

I on the other hand, I liked third novel much more, because it was much slower and more detailed. I am looking forward to see this new season, because this is the palce where show should start to be really good.

Especially looking at how next season will be 24 episodes, they could nail it with really good pacing, also the director has been given more budget and freedom to help better make series. Yeah it really effectively puts us in Reinhard's place. In that moment all that he is aware of, all that exists in his universe; are himself and Kircheis. It shows that despite being in a room full of people, many eager to follow him, how isolated he really is. He sits alone looking at his best and perhaps only true friend dying and from this moment in the series, even as billions of voices hail him as "Mein Kaiser" on some level, he will always be alone.

For the performance of VA, the original one seems to emphasize that Reinhard can't accept the fact and still expect Sieg could survive…The new one emphasizes his sorrow directly. I prefer the performance of OVA. Because it can connect with Reinhard's following words to Mittermeyer naturally.

I agree, and highly prefer the original because of this. In DNT he sounds like he already accepted it and is grieving, but then goes off later as if he didn't. It's just weird, whereas in the OVA it makes perfect sense. I also don't like how they made him scream more than necessary in DNT.

Honestly prefer Ryo Horikawa as the indignation in his voice and refusal to accept the dying of his dearest friend in front of him seems more fitting to the character of Reinhardt.

I find value in both. The OVA spends more time on the scene, and despite some hammy directing (KHANNN) the amount of time spent on it lends a lot of weight. I also still absolutely love additional change with Oberstein attempting to shield him. As for Die Neue These, honestly it still hits most of the same emotional beats which is greatly helped by the vocal performance by Mamoru Miyano. I also like that Bergengrun is more active and we see more of how affected he is, especially since this is important in later arcs. I don't really like the lighting or that long still shot of the overhead signet, it looked out of place and kind of cheap. I'd still say OVA is better if only for both my love of that adaptation and Ryo Horikawa's performance, but Die Neue These still fairly lives up to the OVA.

I'm torn because on the one hand the voice acting is much more emotional in the DNT version but the music is much more emotional in the OVA. Also when Kircheis is on the ground I like the shots in the OVA better, DNT looks kind of flat since we just see the profiles of Reinhard and Kircheis.

I like the points that you guys mentioned here For me, the director's choice of making everything dark as Reinhardt moves towards Kircheis is such a powerful effect. It visually represents how everything around has become irrelevant to Reinhardt at that moment and how all that mattered was his friend lying on the ground. Maybe I'm slightly biased because I've seen one before the other but I can't help but think that even if it were reversed and I saw DNT initially, I'd prefer that dramatic effect of darkening everything else executed in the original.

I personally prefer Die Neue These here because it sticks to the novel better, it is probably bias because I read the novel first, but it is also the great storyboard and interesting details here and there that made the scene even better. Tho I do agree the OVA gave the whole scene a lot more time, Die Neue These was probably under time constraint, but I hope season 2 would be better because it is an actual TV anime and not a set of movies... EDIT: Tho to be fair, that's really my only big problem with all of Die Neue These especially the movies, it is the rushing of certain scenes, it all looks beautiful and well directed, but it doesn't show enough nor focuses on scenes for long enough...

@@daffo595 Yeah, Reinhardt has subtly in the original. By comparison he comes off as melodramatic and over acted in DNT. I love the og portrayal because the 'in denial' Reinhardt both matches the viewers perspective "Did they really just kill Kircheis that early!" and also represents an unusual at this point loss of composure for Reinhardt. He didn't even act like a child when he was one and him blubbering like one here gives a much stronger impact to the scene.

It is more emotional but IMO it doesn't make much sense. In the OVA it's clear that Kircheis accepts his fate and Reinhard tries to convince himself that his friend is not dying just yet, that it's just a single wound. He's not crying, he's just in shock. In the remake it feels like he's trying to comfort Kircheis and convince HIM that it's nothing big. He's crying so he already knows this is it and yet when Mittermeyer says "he's dead" Reinhard doesn't accept it. So yeah, it is emotional but it's a bad direction ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I feel that as good as Miyano Mamoru is, his voice dosen't fit Reinhard as much as Horikawa's. Mamoru's voice is more mature and his manner is calm, while Horikawa's voice acutely compliments Reinhard's age, face and personality, bit snotty and prideful but at the same time the passionate and sincere. For the voice acting Herr, since Reinhard is experiencing a personal loss of this level for the first time so he is supposed to be unaccepting of it and shocked, slightly immature. Mamoru portrays his grief better, but maybe because of the direction and also Ryo's performance express his stern denial and shock better. Overall OVA is much better and natural seeming and delivers a perpetual gravity and hollowness.

It's tough! Personally I'm the opposite - prefer Horikawa's portrayal of Reinhard's emotions as it seems more in character (going from denial to gradual realisation and terror compared to the immediate breakdown in DNT). On the other hand, I think Miyano's voice is a better fit - it's mature and authoritative but carries this youthful, boyish undertone which is how I imagine a 20 year old navy admiral and pseudo-politician would sound. What a luxury to have two top class VAs voicing this amazing character 😊

I would count Laser Disk and Blu Ray as one and say that originla is still better, you can see the shock Rienhard was in , he slowly moved and moment by moment realized what has transpired, in this new TV series the scene seem rushed and VA has done a good job but Reindhard in OVA was almost whispering, he cant just get hold of the situation.I like it becuase Reinhard was always level headed and his mind was always clear and ahead of others but losing his best friend tripped him of all his goodness for a good period of time I would say OVA trully project the deepness of their friendship

Is it plain nostalgia that makes me prefer the old OVAs over the new anime? Much as I put it on a pedestal, it's not untouchable as proven by the DVD remasters changing a few scenes slightly, including this. Maybe it's the character designs. And maybe it's just that I feel this Kirchies is so much more colder than the OVA version. I still want the new to go the entire distance slim as those hopes may be. I love to see more of the differences and more awesome performances+animations for this classic tale.

While both versions are good, the DNT version is much better in showing their expressions along with the tone of their voices. The background didn't even fade to black, meaning you can see some characters grieving Kircheis' death (as seen with Bergengrün at 4:25).

I would say not really its pretty badly directed, The background fading to Black is symbolic to what Reinhard's seeing there and how for him its nothing else except Kircheis its a pretty powerful visual effect and part is present even in the novels, the OVA enhances it even more esp with its use of Bruckner's symphony to add to effect, this bland character designs don't convey the expressions on the same level either and this overly dramatic tone for Reinhard and him being all emotional doesn't convey Reinhard's emotion properly here which is him being childish and not accepting that Kircheis is dead instead he is even comforting Kircheis, he is in shock a state of disbelief. Just look at their dialogue with Mittermeyer. In DNT he is like he has accepted it already and getting emotional and crying and still trying to refuse which comes off stupid or rather relatively senseless

Laser Disc nie został uwzględniony ze względu na dostępność jedynie w niskiej rozdzielczości oraz fakt, że głównym celem naszego porównania było wykazanie podobieństw i różnic między wersją OVA a remake'em na tle książki. Wprowadzenie kolejnego elementu, który dublowałby jeden z już istniejących, dodatkowo utrudniłoby widzom odbiór. Hm.... I like parts of both. The original had Oberstein protect Siegfried as well by standing in front of him, which fits rather well. And the whole scene made the loss feel far more personal and dramatic with the world suddenly being all-black and the finer details in their movements (Kircheis struggling to grasp Siegfried for instance). Eventhough it made Siegfried look borderline psychotic (which, all things considered, would not be that far off). The new version gives the room a much grander design, more befitting an imperial regents throne room. But given his station, there still would be two honour guards to his side that far up (which could've filled in for Oberstein). And while the loss was not conveyed as dramatic (no blackness, too many closeups), it still felt quite realistic and devastating.

Ugh....the remake messed it up so bad. First, everything is hyper dramatic to where it's no longer realistic. Yet somehow at the same time they also managed to suck the emotions dry. And the music in the series...so repetitive and uninspired. The slow approach to Kircheis with the flashbacks, the blood spraying on Braunschweig...everything was carefully crafted in the original.

I seen both and frankly the OVA has character to it, its a lot more indepth, you actually get to know the people whereas the "new" adaption is not a remake but rather just another take on the books, it does not feel the same, it feels like any other generic anime that has plagued the industry for past 10 years, recycled character designs, skimps on the story, the books are extremely complex but the original OVA made such a masterful adaption managing to capture so much and also had to make many adjustments to the story, whereas the new adaption is not so good at it, it focuses more on the people, rather than the whole picture of things, but even as it focuses on people, it feels more like a retelling of events rather than the characters actually being alive and their actions have meanings but rather they are just another piece of the story. Some people may say the new adaption is better, thats fine the new adaption does animation far better and is more flashy while using popular voice actors that americans love to jerk off to. But the old OVA, it had masterful battle scenes, that does not feel chaotic, they are orderly but also I can see improvements but the new adaption the battle scenes are a huge mess, very hard to follow and makes no sense unless you actually know from the original OVA what is suppose to happen, not good! And then to add insult to injury, the ship designs are, frankly, they are nasty, its another appeal to the mainstream and that, really is what the new adaption can be described as, an appeal to the mainstream, is it a bad anime? No, its okay, its got outstanding soundtrack, good animation, flashy design theme and scenes but lacks in character, it feels like any other sci fi anime of past 10 years. The old OVA, its a classic, it suffers from stiff animation quality, sometimes very drawn out scenes, towards the end the battle scenes grow very confusing if you are not paying attention and even though its 110 episodes, it still feels like its rushing over some parts.

@@rorosami3707 The whole point of the story is that Yang is weaker than Reinhardt because he seeks to defend for more than himself. He can beat Reinhardt all war, but he was always bound to lose because he values his ideals of democracy more than being a victorious general. If Yang committed a coup de tat to save the Republic, he'd of established coup de tat's and military rule as "Heroic actions to save the nation", which would rapidly end up with a runaway military like Imperial Japan eventually had, and have killed the Republic whether he beat the Empire or not. Whether choosing otherwise he had a chance, if slim, of saving the Republic anyway and keeping the ideals alive. This is why the series ends how it does. For all the drama, until the end both sides essentially are their own stories seperate from the other. The republic destined to lose due to the ideals, and one last failed stand to show a dying immature autocrat that those ideals meant something.

@@filozof90 The only god damn thing shown about the Imperium that is positive is that Reinhardt legitimately believes in being a good ruler and puts those he trusts to exercise that will in power. Even then, Reinhard is obviously unstable for the entire second half the show and causes the death of millions upon millions for absolutely no reason, and he just gets away with it because he's Emperor. What it definitely does say, is that autocracy is better than religious terorrism. But the Terraists plotline has long been called a shitty plotline.

The only certain thing is that they are each its own thing, with very different appeals and character interpretations. I'd say DNT is overdramatic, but also is this version of the OVA, the DVD version; Laserdisc is the most genuine version. That being said, not everyone likes raw, hence the different and modern appeal of DNT.
