Actually, mothers' wombs are very loud for the baby. All that blood and fluids pumping, loud sound of the heart and mother's lungs breathing. It's one of the reasons _shushing_ and white noise works well to calm babies down. Because it mimics the wooshing and loudness of the womb.

You don't need to use this much. In terms of the sheet metal dampener, factory cars (economy cars at least) usually just have the underseal underneath the car, then most of cabin floorpan treated and *then* only a few small rectangular pieces around the boot and one small rectangle on each doorskin. Plus a fitted insulation pad on both sides of the firewall (with all the holes cut out where the hoses and wiring passes through) and underneath the bonnet. Then the underlay, be it foam type or cotton felt type, and the carpet does the rest. (With either more cotton felt panels or 3M Thinsulate panels attached to the back of the interior plastic trim panels, but these are usually not full coverage on an economy car either.) Of course luxury cars are a different story! They have fitted insulation pads even above the headliner, thicker dense polystyrene-like foam covers over the rear wheel arches (& inside the front wheel arches too), acoustic or double glazed glass etc. Even if you heavily sound deaden your economy car with 50kg/100lb of extra insulation, noise will still pour in through the factory glass which will be still be much thinner than on a luxury car, plus vibration will still come through the (usually) rigid mounted subframe unlike the fully isolated subframes on a luxury car. Of course to obtain a significant difference, it can be useful to use this much or even more of the stuff -- different types not just Dynaliner & Dynapad, but also thicker cotton felt underlay, more insulation on the back of trim panels etc. In a modern car that already has insulation, you need a surprisingly large amount of it to make a significant difference -- the difference might be more pronounced in an older car that originally had almost no insulation at all. Obviously the advantage the OEM has is they can target specific noise sources and be scientific about it with before and after comparisons as to using guesswork. E.g., the "blankets" often found on top of injectors like on the Ford Ecoboost or even on engine timing covers (there's an insulation pad down the timing side of the Alfa Romeo 2.4TD engine) or even the entire engine undertray has an insulation pad on some cars (perfect for absorbing oil!) these days.

@@bassam_salim So, let me try. A brain essentially has a "focus budget". Like, doing a thing takes a certain amount of focus, and it is a brains aim to get that whole budget allocated. So, an ADHD brain has a vastly larger focus budget. This may sound good, and in some cases, it is. But if you're - say - a student trying to concentrate on class, that's really hard, as you find yourself doing other things to get that attention budget allocated. Symptoms include: - Impulsiveness - Disorganization - Problems at prioritizing tasks - Poor time management skills - Problems focusing on a task - Excessive activity or restlessness - Low frustration tolerance - Problems following through with and completing tasks And here's how ADHD meds work: They're actually stimulants. The meds I take are an amphetamine derivate. By giving the brain stimulants like aforementioned amphetamines, or even caffeine, those stimulants take up part of the attention budget, and allow you to focus on more mundane tasks like class. If you want to find out if you have ADHD, there are a few self-tests online, and if that gives you positive results, you may want to look at coping mechanisms, or, if it's really bad, talk to a therapist/psychiatrist.

Years ago,I had a class 5 desert car that I drove on the street. Solid-mounted engine and transmission. No insulation. Aluminum interior panels, and a close ratio trans all added up to a seriously deafening experience. Ear plugs were mandatory. An ex girlfriend refused to ride in it. Still, I had some of the most fun in that car that a person can have. Good times!

Regarding your beginning segment, it's true, not a lot of people realize how many sounds a vehicle can make, on a motorcycle, the engine's vibration is so loud and overpowering, that if you drive on a highway close to the concrete barriers will scare the hell out of you as you'll actually start hearing the chain, which resembles the sound of throwing a rod

Early last week I finally found a buzz in my car. Most of the sound made me think it was coming from my passenger door speaker, but it turned out to be my tire pressure gauge vibrating in the thin plastic glovebox.

Instead of the Dynaliner you could use any HVAC closed cell foam sheet such as Armacell. It is a common industrial product and should be much cheaper. Rated for cold and hot temperatures. For large flat sheets of metal, where you don’t mind a bump. You can glue or tape a strip of 1/4” D shape wood strip on the diagonal or in an X pattern. Then Dynamat over or around it. The wood structure gives it stiffness and you could possibly even save on the Dynamat. For slightly curved panels, I think laying on the wood strip with double sided tape could be done.

A real engineering focus would be what is the minimum amount of dynamat you need to dampen the NVH. There are studies done on the diminishing gains of full vs partial cover from metal backed butyl rubber sound deading. For doors I think it was 30% cover on the resonant center of the door skin as well as the inner door frame

Yeah, economy-type cars (so a Renault Megane or a VW Passat) usually only come with one rectangular panel of deadener applied somewhere near the middle of the doorskin. It's enough to remove the resonance of the door panel and get rid of the hollow clang sound that makes the car sound cheap when the doors close. There are usually some insulation pads (cottonfelt or 3M Thinsulate) stuck to the back of the interior plastic door panels too, but again usually not full coverage. If it was a Bentley where the goal is to try to block as much as noise as possible coming through the door including double glazing (as well as trying to block noise as possible everywhere else including the roof), I guess the approach to insulating the door would be quite different? I think it is important to use a variety of different types of insulation. Modern cars usually have fitted insulation pads on both sides of the firewall and then the carpet underlay and so on. Luxury cars often have thick polystrene blocks over the front and rear wheel arches (in addition to the carpet-type insulation on the wheel arch liner itself, sheetmetal deadener directly on the cabin side of the wheel arches, carpet underlay insulation on top of that on the inside of the wheel arches -- I even saw this on the *front* wheelarches of a Ford Focus which is inside the engine bay which seems crazy but front wheelarch>engine bay>cabin must be a significant noise path, big foam pieces to remove cavity resonances from the rear quarter panel area etc).

I can't recall how much VW coats their cars with, but I seem to recall they use 35 lbs of sound-deadening spray and stick-on foam - per car. VW sound and paint tech are probably the best in the business; their negatively-charged paint treatments work better than galvanization for corrosion prevention too.

I worked for volvo for a few months and the sound deadening tech was always joking about VW that they just spray tons and tons of the stuff on the car instead of using it precisely and just enough increasing the weight unnecessarily and paying more for the Material. I once did this the cheap way, getting ice/water shield roofing material remnants and putting it inside the doors of my Saturn. I told myself it made it quieter and improved the audio quality. It definitely made the doors feel better to close. PS. The rubber roller you use is called a "brayer" for some reason.

Rubberized undercoating had been my goto for all my shitboxes. Make sure to avoid those with terrible smell. Applies faster than getting access, also super cheap. Gets in all the nooks and crannies like nothing else. Dynamat is definitely worth it for a car you truly care about

Dynamat /Dynapad are the best products by far. I also use expanding foam for hollow sections and mass loaded vinyl / closed cell foam if I cannot afford Dynapad. Every car I own I fully sound proof the trunk, hood and under the rear seat..takes away boomy road noise and a lot of exhaust/mechanical/suspension noise.

About 85 pounds (40kg) for the whole car. They sell a lightweight version called SuperLite that is 30% lighter. If you're worried about weight, you can just do the middle of the big panels. it won't be as good but it'll be a lot better than nothing.

Nice... I looked at dynamat for mine, ended up going with another brand that's a little cheaper. Time will tell if I regret it. Mind you, I'm fitting one of those dreadful old-fashioned internal combustion engines, so it probably won't make a lot of difference anyway. My car isn't exactly a Bentley :D

SPI Epoxy Primer. awesome stuff, really tough. it's made to go on bare metal and you can put body filler over it, so it's great to put down on anything you might paint later. or anything you need a tough coat on, like the floor.

I love Dynamat, used extreme and dynapad (where it fit) all over the inside my PC case over ten years ago and it went from already very quiet to utterly silent. Did I waste a tremendous amount of money? To answer that question allow me to ask you one in return - Will *you* be enjoying *your* standardised layout PC case for the rest of your life whether you want to or not? Exactly. It turns out the real friends were the possibly overheating but definitely inaudible components we owned along the way. *Engineers pls no dunk on me by abandoning ATX k thx bye 😅 **PS I didn't block any vents obviously. Or not obviously. You be the judge.

I used self adhesive asphalt roofing patches and the foam my computer hardware was packaged in. Did it work as well as dynamat, probably not. Was it insanely cheaper and good enough, hell yes. It dd stink of tar for a bit though.
