Eddie was a great character in this film. He captured that 1970s NYC hustler persona _perfectly_ in his dialogue and mannerisms. Props to the actor - Mr. Carl Lee.

About a decade later while watching a move Red Dawn about a Soviet invasion of the US. I recognized Ron O'Neal in the role of a Cuban commander trying to hunt down the American guerilla fighters. It was kind of surreal, after Superfly. I felt like at one point he was going go in on his soldiers like, "I want them Wolverines hunted and found...Tonight!" Maybe Priest settled in Cuba and got drafted by the Cuban government.

There were a couple more great scenes of dialogue in this movie that give this scene a run for its money. Great movie! I waited a good 25+ years before finally seeing this film on dvd. SHAFT would always be on late at night (after the 11PM news), but they blacklisted this movie from network television back in the day because they (whoever "they" are) claimed that the movie promoted drug dealing and cocaine use. At least that was the case in the New York City television market of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Superfly was a cool character but he was looking for a way OUT of the game. Sure, some poor kids in the hood or the barrio may have wanted to be like him. However, overall the movie was about a guy who knew he'd end up in jail or dead and wanted to turn his life around. He sold drugs because his poverty and a felony on his record gave him few options to live a comfortable lifestyle.

@lwmson6 жыл бұрын
This was a good movie and Ron O"Neal was one of the actors of that the blaxpliotation era who could actually act, but to make a movie glorifying a dope peddler and justifying it because it was the "only thing he could do" was immoral.
@rahlohmcdonogh48552 жыл бұрын
It presented the dilemma.
@Biggdoom344 Жыл бұрын
I think you missed the message. It didn’t glorify dope dealing. It was actually an anti drug movie summed up with the song Freddie’s dead. ..there’s a Freddie on the corner now..but remember Freddie is dead. In summary..this stuff will eventually get you arrested or killed.
@lwmson Жыл бұрын
@@Biggdoom344 The song Freddie's Dead was a side message from Curtis Mayfield about the danger of drugs. The truth is that Freddie didn't die from drugs. He was killed in a car accident. But the movie itself was sending a message that the only way a black guy could make it was if he sold drugs. As Eddie said to Priest, "I know it's a rotten game. But it's the only one the man left for us to play, and that's the stone cold truth."
@Biggdoom344 Жыл бұрын
@@lwmson Freddie’s character died getting hit by a car in the movie. The song Freddie is dead talked about the peril of drug dealing with serious consequences. But if you think priest wanted to get out when he had police protection and unlimited coke to sell as glorified drug dealing ( oh yeah, scatter got killed because he was no longer necessary) that’s your take.
@lwmson Жыл бұрын
@@Biggdoom344 The song isn't about the peril of dealing drugs. It's about the peril of doing drugs. "Freddie's on the corner now. If you want to be a junkie wow. Just remember that Freddie's dead."I know Priest wanted out, but he won in the end because he made his big payday. That's where the glory comes in.
