When Supergirl states that maybe changing costumes will confuse her enemies, it reminds me that the same point was made during the brief era where Spider-Man was changing between the classic red and blue costume and the (non-symbiote) black costume. Lois Lane once gifted Superman with an indestructible white-tie costume (with a top hat and an "S" emblem sash). I forget where she got it, but it's a real shame that he never actually took her on a date in it. Or, the story could have ended with Clark Kent taking her out, saying Superman lent him this nice suit, "Isn't it swell?" and Lois saying irritably, "Superman looked a lot better in it, Clark", and Clark winking at the reader....

I like one aspect of it. Changing it all the time for no reason is kinda annoying. But the evening gown and beach suit or situational ones I like. Not to say the non situational ones were bad. I really like the one with the red vest, blue 1-piece underneath, S on the belt, and medium-length red boots. So many superheroes wore capes, especially in the old days. But this costume seemed comfortable and practical. It still showed some amount of skin, which was evidently the common factor in these designs. The one exception to that was the business suit costume, which was from the same cover of issue 397 of Adventure Comics, shown at the 3:49 mark in the video. I guess one way to think of this is to decide if you want a costume or an outfit. And what would the distinctions be? The two I mentioned there seemed to be more like outfits, along with the evening wear. They're out of the ordinary enough to not be regular street clothes, but not exactly tights either.

Personally, my least favorite of her costumes is the one they gave her when she was officially brought back for Post-Crisis DC under Jeph Loeb, who thought it was a good idea to play up her sex appeal as she was supposed to be a "superpowered Paris Hilton" type! I'm not a prude who dislikes sex appeal, far from it, but only where it fits, and this was completely missing the fact that the entire reason there was such an outcry to bring her back in the first place was because Peter David had whetted our appetites with the "orignal" Kara, who is as far from that as you can get! So, let me get this straight: DC wanted Kara to stay dead and gone, but let PAD bring her back for just a few issues; he gambled that the fans would like her so much, they'd want her back permanently, and he was right! So, of course, DC agreed, but in a "monkey's paw" sort of way, by canceling his book (effectively firing him) and having another creative team bring her back, but with a personality that was almost the exact opposite of what the fans really wanted! ...Passive-Aggressive much, DC?

I think it would have been possible to update the costume without anchoring it to a particular time period--and to keep it 'classically' Superman-y. I have to say this video was a pleasure as it stemmed from the time I started collecting as a kid back in the 1970s. I had a special fondness for the Legion of Superheroes and Supergirl back then. So kudos to you, a very dreamy host, covering nostalgic and dreamy subject matter. Thanks.

Wow, I think the Supergirl outfit with blue pants is where the TV series grew inspiration from. I didn't know she got a pants outfit before in the comics and I think it fits the best to me at least. I really hope she gets the modern Supergirl TV series outfit in the comics.

Supergirl should hang out with Kitty Pryde. I never knew. Lots of comic artists love drawing fashion: all of the classic Archie comic artists were chosen for that reason, but even high concept artists like Bill Sienkiewicz have said they really like drawing haute couture

Some weird ones in there, but also some cool concepts. Though it always makes me question things when a character who flies where's a skirt/dress.
@paultapner18963 жыл бұрын
I think these are all far better than what Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl wore at the same time. But then that wouldn't be hard. The full body one doesn't really work on the printed page, whereas it does on tv. The problem is the gloves. They stand out too much. The tv version make it work as it doesn't have them.

NGL, I ADORE the costume at 9:54. I think it's really cute. Also, I'm kinda feeling the ascot one too at 9:20. Maybe a few refinements, but it's certainly something groovy. lol

Supergirl's costume collection competing with Superman's Lois shrine collection at this point. 7:13 Yeah honestly even now I feel its still one of her stronger designs, that swimsuit and New Gods ones though are too far different imo. 0:35 Damn I forget Sue looked like that, I'm curious what wen't through their head coming up with that.
@jasonpratt51263 жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly, "the 90s" were going through their head. Everything had to be jacked up to 11, so giving her a boob-window swimsuit (with a collar) was a way of updating the team's look. The artists often drawing it were horrible, so in practice it usually looked much WORSE than the panels shown (coloring problems, line problems, the whole thing was cursed). Eventually the costume was explained by Sue having an evil twin, whose moniker I can't recall at the moment. Shrike?... don't think so but something like that.

My first memory of Supergirl is the puffy-sleaved choker- cape outfit. But I really like her original look the best. They gave her yet another new look a decade later with an oh so 80's headband.

I like the idea, and a lot of the costumes are really well made, and I like the concept of asking fans for designs too, I don't think it's them trying to be lazy and take advantage of the fans, to me it's just a nice way to make to interact with them, to say that this is cheap in any way is just skepticism

In the 90's the Batman Artists came up with a ton of costume ideas and they were used in the story: Brotherhood of the Bat. Kind of reminds me of this, without taking advantage of fans.

I know nobody really talks about this, but I was really digging the subtle 80’s montage saxophone music in the background, it was a nice beat and really helped accentuate all the wild 70’s fashion, I was even bobbing my head a few times, good work Sasha. 9:12 I like the ascot and swimsuit looking one, because it makes her look like a pirate… And now I want to super girl comic where she’s a pirate wearing that costume, I would love to SEA that lol

In the Great Book of Superman, published in 1978, had a layout of the Fortress of Solitude. It showed Kara had a small apartment of her own of to the side of the main Fortress. Did any of the comics in 1960s and 70s show her at this apartment?

I guess I'm with you on the hot pants and puffy sleeves costume, it's more iconic I think, or at least less weird. That wig you're wearing also really compliments your face, speaking of fashion. Good video, thanks.

I say you take your defense strategies where you find them. I don't know, houndstooth mixed with horizontal stripes could be very off-putting, knock an opponent off balance. I've been to New York Fashion Week. Plenty of things there made me want to run and hide lest I go blind. - MAL

I'd love to see a video like this for Catwoman's and Black Canary's costumes over the years, as they've both had a slew of them -- ranging from dreadful (Catwoman's "pirate boots", black leotard, blue tights, and red mask in the early 1970s and Dinah's recent, hideous "Daisy Duke" shorts and combat boots ensemble) to terrific (Catwoman's skin-tight purple body suit and thigh-high black boots--courtesy of artist Jim Balent--and Dinah's revamped original-style costume worn during Gail Simone's run on Birds of Prey).

DC would repeat their "fan submissions" use in their revived Dial H For Hero series, curiously also in Adventure Comics, in the 80s. This time including full character concepts [names, powers etc.] You should cover this one too!

@6:03 is that car's rear raised on a 2-foot-tall jack? 🤔 I guess we shouldn't rag on Rob Liefeld's artwork so much since he isn't the only professional comic book artist to screw up perspective shots.
