In the end, many years later when Chartres became Private Secretary, he admitted and said publicly that Lord Altrincham did the Crown a huge favour and he was happy to publicly say so. They would have hated it at the time. Tommy Lascelles was to all intents and purposes a Victorian

Even George V in the 1930's knew that mass media was going to change the role and visibility of the sovereign. When all you have to do is look good in uniform and not fall off your horse, someone with the personality of a turnip could be an effective king or queen. But that didn't quite cut it by the time TV came around and they were all in denial about it.

@@michaelwilson2937Rest assured in today’s Australian conservative political coalition of the Liberal/National party he would be considered a communist 5th columnist and appeaser of radical leftists. The rot of extremist conservative politics has very much infected Australia you only have to look at three of the last conservative PM, the current opposition leader and the fact that the moderate liberal wing of the Liberal party has abandoned the party in droves, so much so that once blue ribbon conservative seats once held by former PMs are now held by independents who once were members of the Liberal party

I was once slammed by a boss for criticising the company but I quickly explained that it was an analysis which was constructive and not just empty critisicm, there is a difference. When you criticise you have to also propose solutions. I once did an audit on a huge company I worked for as after a few months I realised that it was very disfunctional, never changing. I did it on my own time and gave it to my boss who was shocked. They ended up by hiring a 'real' auditor who charged many millions to end up with the same conclusions as I. The head of the company asked me if I wanted to be in charge of the 'new' system and as I love a challenge I said yes.

Brilliant work here. Not just the acting but in showing people at different locations wordlessly reacting to the interview. I particularly like the lady at 4:22 glancing over at her husband. In this scene only two people are talking but a lot is said by many people.

I honestly don’t understand why, Elizabeth is so upset at the end. She’s fuming, and clearly is taking the criticism far too personally. Criticisms like these are never or should ever be seen as personal attacks. They are meant for individuals to be able to change professionally, in the end it’s a job.

I think because the idea of criticizing the monarchy is completely new. This guy writes a criticism of her and it's a scandal, he gets on TV (a new technology) and can say his piece to a national audience. Her predecessors never had to deal with that. Discent would have been kept in it's place by the powers that be and never leave the alternate press. New tech and new democratic ideas blows that all away and they don't not how to respond.

Jealous of JK and Diana? What an odd thing to say. Jackie K was pitied by almost everyone except Americans. But we all gave her credit for sticking it out with her husband and his family. As for Diana, why would the Queen be jealous? Who today would want to be part of either family. Goldfish bowl life was horrendous. Still is!

Belgium, Denmark, Indonesia, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Qatar, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom… I‘ve been to all of them, and I’ve seen their capitals, met their people and travelled across them, and after having studied in five countries and having visited sixty to this day, I can say that constitutional monarchies (today) are the most thriving, most stable economies in the world. They aren‘t perfect, but compared to them, the only republics worth living today would be the US, France, Germany (my birth place) and Switzerland (where I‘ve been living for the last ten years). The rest are either war zones or failed, corrupt places run by dictators, warlords and incompetent bureaucrats.

The US does not have hereditary rulers, thanks to George Washington declining to accept a crown. However, many of its people seem to venerate their presidents to an inordinate degree, and their offspring also. Their media treats some of their families as if they are royal. Viz: all the ink spilled over the possibility of the Donald being succeeded by another member of the Trump family.
