Aap to Marathi hain but living in bhopal. Lagta hai bahut saal pehle migrate kar gaye. Main bhi hoshangabad road mein 1989 aur 1990 kaam kiya permali Wallace company mein . Yaden aaj bhi taaza hain woh bhat suwar ki sawari paanch saat rupay mein, ek time ka khana 10 rs mein , ek chota sa room 600 ke rent mein etc etc . Aaj Bhopal mein to aag lagi Hui hai.

In 1994 I was 14 when my father got a CD of 1942 A Love Story that had RD’s greatest hits including this as bonus. In that age of jarring jhankars and screechy vocals, not to mention below average lyrics and lots of plagiarism of Pakistani old songs, I hadn’t heard anything like it in Bollywood. I’m hearing it after many years to see if it was just nostalgia which made me like this but no it is still soul piercing because of Gulzar sahab’s lyrics, KK’s ever green voice and RD’s immeasurable talent. Unfortunately after the passing of the two greats such magic was never recreated and never will be.

Actually Pancham (panch) means five. If you want to know the story behind how Rahul Dev Burman (1939-1994) received his nickname, it started when he was a baby. Ashok Kumar a.k.a Dadamoni (1911-2001) was visiting Sachin Dev Burman & when he heard Pancham cry, it was as if he was crying in the fifth scale (note)- Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa... That's how he got nickname Pancham. 😎

I also found the pattern of reso-reso to anchor the horse trot in Musafir hoo yaaron. In the beginning its the simple chik-chik-chik, just like the ghungroo un Sholay song. it changes the pattern a bit in the song but Panchamda anchors the sound again by using the same pattern beginning of each antara. Such brilliance !!

My uncle passed away a few years back. He never married and this was his favoutire song, whenever asked to sing he would sing this beautifully. I wish that someday the universe brings us back together and this time I get to be his uncle. And I hope I am able to do as good a job being there for him as he was for me. While he was alive he was a pillar of strength to me and my family. I miss him soo much.
