Just random tidbits here: - for some reason, some comments say Maina's name should be read as "mee-na". Well, I checked the kanji and this is how it should be read: 舞(ma)伊(i)奈(na) - on the other hand, SHB incorrectly read "u" from both Umeki and ubume as "you". it should be read as "oo", similar to food or mood. So, Umeki as "oo-meh-key" and ubume as "oo-boo-meh" - Imojiro is literally the potato guy, based on his name "imo" meaning potato.
@aiyeuhhh2 жыл бұрын
Japanese’s pronunciation system isn’t as complex as people make it to be haha. You just need to know how each hiragana and/or katakana in the alphabet is pronounced and you’re pretty much all set (e.g. あいうえお). Sure there’s rising and falling intonation to differentiate certain kanjis, such as 箸 (はし) vs 橋 (はし), but just for putting a Japanese names into a sentence, you don’t need that.
@c.m.27322 жыл бұрын
Ubume is usually pronounced "oo-boo-may," not "oo-boom," but that's a minor nitpick. Interesting thing about the memory loss: as far as I can tell, the loss of the memory of a person seems to be a recurring thing in Japanese ghost stories. The biggest example I can name right now is Corpse Party, where anyone who dies has their whole memory wiped from the world outside the ghostly realm.

Love your videos! Just one correction: The little boy indicates that Miana was the one who forced his hand in the fan. In reality, I think he just did it himself. (Or maybe it was a ghost?) He says, "Mother, she forced my hand into the fan." I added the comma, which makes the sentence easier to understand. That's why the mom was so angry with Miana.
@konarin95382 жыл бұрын
Or maybe change the comma into exclamation mark, indicating he's calling for his mother. The comma only makes me think that he's saying his mother is the one that forced (told) him to put his hand on the fan, which is contradictory to your last statement

@washedblue Жыл бұрын
I thought it was the ghost (and that the boy blamed Maina because he was unsure) but she only seems to gain power to hurt/touch others after the sacrifice, so maybe he was just being a dumb kid and blamed Maina so he didn't get in trouble? Or him vaguely saying "she" would obviously mean the only person on staff to the mother, when it was actually somehow the ghost. Maybe she has some power over the mind? I can't imagine it was the mother since the genders are split at this bathhouse and with how she chided Maina. I think it was just a grammatical error as a result of translation issues. Since it's Chilla's Art, some of the gaps are kind of left to the imagination (and horror of working in customer service where you must accept blame for everything). This bit reminded me of that scene in The Invisible Man when (spoilers) he hits the daughter, but she naturally assumes it was Cecilia because she was the only person visibly in the room, and of course being a protector, the dad takes the daughter's side in it.

Great vid bro. Here’s a life hack that makes reading any Japanese word super easy: the vowels will only ever make one noise. There are only about 126 sounds in Japanese so these sounds are always for the vowels: a says “ah”, e says “eh”, i always says “ee”, u says “oo”, and o is always “oh”. So “Mina” sounds like “Meena”. You’d be hard pressed to find a word in Japanese that doesn’t use exclusively these noises.

actually there are quite a number out there. many of them arent even gender specific to be honest. Around Eastern Asia, children and Females are often being depicted to have a higher mental/spiritual power, so they are more likely to become such a strong spiritual being than grown male. And also, female are frequently subjected to get a mistreatment from who ever their male partner are, especially in such country with male-dominated culture. However, I need to note that, for many Japanese Yokai, it doesn't really require the original identity to be female in order for them to do their things like transforming into, or creating illusion of a female in order to trick normal human being and do what ever their lore are supposed to make them do. Oh and often than not, we Asian seems to have more body-horror going on to those evil spirits than the western culture for some reason.

In south east asia, there's a lot of male ghost or monster myth. But as mention on comment before, a lot of scary vengeful ghost usually are culturally a woman or a child who were being abused and killed or was a part of sacrificial ceremony. while male monster myth are more like a greedy person who sell his soul and turn into monsters for greedy reason. storytelling wise, It is understandable that woman ghost are more developed in games and movies. if anyone interested, I would like to recommend a game called Dreadout, It's an Indonesian game similar to fatal frame but it has a catalogue of south east asian ghost myth and lore.

A very nice and detailed explanation as always! I have two questions left - first one is about the hair, is it the hair of the demon woman trying to capture Maina? Or it just there to show how powerful or close she is to her? Second is, the further we are into the game, the more stuff Maina has in her room, like in the beginning she barely has anything, and then she has a microwave, a fridge and later on a tv. Does this mean something?

I've seen Jacksepticeye and 8-BitRyan play this game and it is both incredible and very horrifying. I surely would not be able to play it myself, as I feel more comfortable watching others getting scared and having the stories explained by KZbinrs like you! This was very interesting and informative! Thank you very much for explaining! I do have to wonder, though, if there are any relations to the Ubume and the ghosts from movies such as "The Grudge". I've only seen the American versions, having been 13 at the time (and I'm still terrified of them to this day), but I noticed that the Ubume and the ghosts from those movies share similar physical appearances: being women (and a young boy in the case of the first film) with ashy or white skin, wide red eyes (I think?), gaping mouths and long black hair that is often involved in the haunting of victims. Though I think "The Grudge" ghosts were only vengeful spirits of the women who spread a curse from their place of violent deaths to anyone who entered it and not demons. I'm honestly too scared of them to Google about them, so I'm just going off of memory, lol. One of the victims, later one of the ghosts, is even named Yoko, so hearing that name in this game made me think of the first film even more. I'm just curious if there's a relation between them, though, and if this game and those movies had been based around the same thing! Other culture's myths are very fascinating. Apologies for the lengthy comment!
@angeryfluuf65142 жыл бұрын
So the ghosts from movies like the Ring and the Grudge were actually inspired by vengeful Japanese spirits called Onryo, which literally translates to "grudge-spirit". They are actually pretty interesting part of Japanese folklore that are even connected to prominent people in Japanese history such as Tairo no Masakado, Emperor Sutuko, and Sugawara no Michizane, the first and second of which have shrines dedicated to them in Japan still to this day (haven't heard anything about Emperor Sutuko but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a shrine dedicated to him).

So I'm a bit confused here. The story is about the Monk attempting to get rid of the Ubume, the spirit of the woman he impregnated and killed years prior, and the mother of the son in the boiler room basement / hatch. In order to do this, the Monk thinks he needs to make three sacrifices, all of which need to be women. Yoko is the first sacrifice, Maina the second, and Erena supposed to be the third (going off the good ending with Erena not being killed). In the video you said that Yoko is the Ubume, but that wouldn't make any sense (unless I misunderstood and that wasn't what you said) because for one, Yoko is wayyyy to young to have been the mother of the son who is now a grown adult, and two Yoko was supposed to be the first sacrifice to get rid of the Ubume in the first place, so how could she be the Ubume? I guess that's what I'm confused about, wouldn't the original woman who was killed be the Ubume? If so then why is it assumed and implied that the spirit from the bathhouse is Yoko? If I'm stupid and missed something please let me know, I'm genuinely confused-

So basically that thing in basement is yoko’s son, does that mean that the monk S£xually A$$aulted her?
@xsirboshka007 Жыл бұрын
@@Thedeathofapartygirl But Yoko died in July of that year, so the son couldn’t be Yoko’s- Plus the entire reason Yoko was killed was to be the first sacrifice to rid the Monk of the Ubume.

The yokai is actually pronounced oo-boo-may, and they're the ghosts of women who either died giving birth or died while pregnant. In many folklore stories, their ghost still take care of the baby. They steal snacks for the child and bring them to their grave and if people follow them, they'll be lead to the Ubume's grave where the snacks and the baby, alive or dead, are in the grave with them. There's also stories of the Ubume being vengeful. There's a video that explains the Ubume better, but I hope I did good.

Wait if yoko is the Ubume, killed by the monk and having given birth to his son, than she couldn’t be the first victim since the three after have to be separated sacrificed to her, so who was the first on? Or were the two sisters one and two and the third is yet to be found?

Now there just needs to be a story explained video for The Bathouse Remake, as the original game is no longer playable due to a game-breaking bug.

People forgetting the dead cursed one IS pretty fréquent in japanese ghost horror stories. Yes, it protect the living somehow, but it mean the dead one are cursed forever.

I don’t want to sound pretentious here, but I am pretty sure it’s pronounced “oo-BOO-may”, not “yoo-BOOM”… When Japanese words are spelled out in English letters, the phonetics stay consistent generally. This is because Japanese characters are more like what we consider syllables in English. Without any accent marks, U is always making the “oo” sound, and E making the “ay” sound, for example. But the characters for them in Japanese would also include the consonant combinations that influence the sound if applicable, as “bu” and “me” do in Ubume. I don’t speak Japanese fluently, but I am pretty sure I’m correct? Anyone who speaks Japanese, please correct me if I’m wrong.
