This year I used a wedge top frame. With a 2 inch strip of surplus foundation. The bees did great at drawing them out

I just harvested some comb honey last night, so it was fun to see your method, being on a very different flow than what I have. Save your back and use your hive lifter so you can get out of bed to harvest your comb honey!
@ThatBeeManАй бұрын
Yes, it was silly to not use the lifter. Thanks for watching!

I have noticed that you have returned to your “regular” self after the devastating start to your year. I am so happy for you Brad!!! You are back into your element and it shows! I’m looking forward to the rest of your season!

On my comb supers I Have to still add a drown frame to get my bees to start working them . I run five comb supers but this season I did not get but two filled out out of my five . 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️. Your colonies are looking great . Good luck with it all . Thanks

I put two drawn frames on each side of the box with six foundationless frames in the center. They are drawing them out, I just need patience.

A tip I found for comb honey is put a frame of drawn comb on the outside walls. It draws the bees into the box quicker and then they work inward on the comb honey frames.

Each of those boxes has two drawn frames on each side with six foundationless on the inside.

Ya some of mine came out swinging yeasterday, time to start feeding for me. Down there with no smoke and no gloves, the girls got me a good 5 or 6 times before I got them closed back up. 🤫Small slow quiet movements🙁wow they was grumpy girls.😂 Need, deserve or tolerate, I like that. It's very true.

Brad, for me it seems that I have to crowd the hive for them to draw out comb honey. If there is no more open cells to put nectar they draw it out usually. Of course you risk the chance of swarming. That is my opinion of course. LOL
@ThatBeeManАй бұрын
They are getting to that stage now. Both drawing the comb frames and on the verge of swarming.

Hi Brad, FWIW, I started using a few strong hives dedicated to only comb honey production rather than a super here or there. I've found if they have a super with drawn comb they will ignore the comb super. Empty comb super always on top, less lifting. As I'm getting older and looking to reduce workload I've started using more and more Ross Rounds to eliminate the cutting, draining, etc. Some initial expense for the frames but worth it in time savings. Also makes a nice neat package and people are always intrigued when I explain that the bees actually built the comb right in the ring. This year I went to putting them on my double nucs (2 queens) and it seems to be working pretty well. Thanks for the videos.

Thanks, Glenn! I appreciate those tips! Thanks for watching!

Also I use the THIN foundation for my comb supers . I have tried putting on top of brood , top , middle an I can not tell any difference how they work the frames . I think next year when I get a super filled on top of the brood box I am going to try to remove my queen excluder an see if that helps to get things done any faster . I have never tried it before. Thanks

Hi Brad. Looks like your honey flow is going well. Just a perspective through a different set of eyes, the one you came across that had swarmed, why not put that full super on another hive for them to finish. Leave the swarm hive as a single until they prove themselves. If they don’t requeen they might get robbed out later and you will loose that box of honey.
@ThatBeeManАй бұрын
That's a really good point. I'll look at that one tomorrow if I can.
@AndrewAHayesАй бұрын
I guess you have to remember to remove those upper enterence sticks when there's a dearth? Which excluder do you prefer, the stainless steel or the plastic? I have heard that the bees can damage their wings on the plastic ones but I haven't seen this in my colonies.

Yes, I close off the uppers when I set my escapes before harvest.

Things are looking really good! You talked about editing in the last live stream. I don't know that I would edit out anything more than you already do, if you edit too much you will spend too much time editing and not enough time doing other things. I enjoy watching it all and if that gets you more potential ad money then keep it as is. You obviously have plenty of people that watch so keep doing what your doing!

Thanks, Brian! I appreciate your confirmation of my video format. I'll keep up what I'm doing. Thanks for watching!
