I've been fascinated by this house for decades. Thank you for taking us inside, and to see the wonderful views. I also appreciated Mr. Smith's interior designs as they were well suited to the space. So glad it was restored and not abandoned. It may be inconvenient and, certainly expensive to maintain, but it's uniqueness makes it worthwhile. :)

I would think that a similar home could be made prefab in just a few sections and put into place and clever design changes could make it easier to service. This would be a fun project for a competition of design students. The answers to all of these problems exist. They just need the right person to think outside of the box and point them out.

Very good idea! You should design a prefab kit of the Chemosphere. The problem is that it's difficult and expensive to build on a hillside. On a flat surface the house is way easier to build.

Just watched The Outer Limits, "The Duplicate Man" (S2,E13, 1964). The Chemosphere is nicely featured as a home of the future. Includes exterior scenes with the tram operating and the interior of the home.

The house is very earthquake proof, because its a lightweight structure that's placed on a strong concrete tube that goes very deep in the ground.

Thank you for this series which teaches me appreciate Lautner‘s work even more. There are so many inventions incorporated in each of his houses. From the aspect of creating an ambience and a mood in a space, I think this house is especially fascinating. However, I am wondering about the aspect of living quality. How is the thermal management done? Probably there are no insulating glass panels used. Are there any insulation layers beyond the roof - or how are the inhabitants not cooked inside the building on a hot summer day (if this is any issue)?

Yes, in every way it's not a very practical house: difficult to acess and high maintance costs. About the thermo managament: It's located high on the hill and catches a lot of wind, all the windows can open and there is AC. But I don't know wether there are insulation panels installed or not. I know that Benedict Taschen doesn't use this house for permanent living but more as a vacation home.

This house reminds me of the "Jupiter 2" space craft from the seventies TV series, "Lost in Space". Perhaps a seaworthy version would make an interesting design for a seafood restaurant. "You won't believe the Dinner Cruise that I recently took on the Mississippi River."

I have to retell this because it was a bit funny. Years ago a contractor came in to the cabinet manufacturer I worked for, walked in with a fat roll of blueprints, and appeared somewhat tired and a bit rundown. It seemed he had been running ragged around LA's woodworking shops trying to find someone who would prove understanding or sympathetic to the job he had. I said let's see what you've got, he spread the drawings out, that's when I saw the floorplan -it was of the chemosphere - and he took a deep breath to start expounding on the project and it's demanding particulars. This I knew was gonna be a fun moment because I paused, didn't say anything for a moment, then said " Aah, John Lautner. It's the chemosphere. What do you need for this job?" This contractor had no idea he had just run into someone who knew a ton about it all and the funny part was he was absolutely stunned into silence. We got the job. This was when Taschen was restoring it.

Wow! Interesting story that you worked for Benedict Taschen restoration of the Chemosphere. Must have been a very difficult job to make the cabinets in a circular house with all the diagonal walls. @@SuperJobbel Taschen's idea was to incorporate design and / or materials that Lautner had originally called out but had not been done. The random pattern slate flooring was one of these details. At the shop, the bed was made for the master bedroom, (I remember thinking what a challenge it was going to be getting into the house), the sliding door that separates the private area from the living room was redone, new solid wood planks were installed cantilevered in the office, and other stuff I can't remember. Taschen used Escher and Gudarena (?) architects for this project. It turned out beautiful. I do recall hearing that the new frameless glass was going to have to be flown and installed using a helicopter.

He made the house more closer to Lautner than the original house when it was owned by Malin. Escher and Gudarena did indeed a great job by restoring many Lautner masterpieces. It would have been fantastic to have a 360 degree covered balcony .this would increase the overall floor space and block the hot sun from overheating the house . Also , maybe make the central support column much larger to house an elavator ?

It was not possible to have an elevator in the column because the concrete of the column had to be very thick to be strong enough to support the house. There's is a hollow tube in the middle of the column but this tube is to narrrow to have place for an elevator. The water pipe/drain goes through this hollow tube. I don't wether a 360 degree blacony was possible.

Yes, that would be a great experiment: rebuilt the Chemosphere a 2nd time to see if it can build faster and better today! The big question however: who's gonna pay it? And how's gonna maintain it? THe maintenance is very difficult. I also would love to live in it, but here in the Netherlands there an't that many hills.

It’s such a great detail And small correction, a small mistake I think was made with the panels, I thought they were aluminium panels not plastic ones, and chem seal produced the expoxid glue (in our country we would say Hartz)

@@LieLa155 I got the information from books, internet and from correspondence with Lautner's biographers Tycho Saariste and J.R Kikkert. I like to make the video as complete as possible. Yes I made one mistake: Chemseal produced the Hartz. Which coutnry are you from? Germany? In the Netherlands we call it Hars. I don't know if the panels are made from alumiunium or not, I thought is polymer. I shall check it out. I'm planning to remake theis video for a better quality video, with more&better pictures, more info and better voice over. So if I remake this video i'm will esnure it will be spot on!

the house can get very hot. lucky up on the hill the weather is cooler than in the valley. But there is no central air. The walls are thin and glass all single pane. There are vents under the windows in the bedrooms that can be opened to allow air through to cool it down. The view out is pretty great.

Extra tip for grab/Uber food deliveries …fabulous that they’re were/ are architects..pushing boundaries unfortunately the progressive nature of building design ..rarely trickles down to even the middle/ upper build of house. For example Bonded glazing to frames has been around for decades ..creating a clean look..not many residential builds have this great detail.

It was not possible to have an elevator in the pillar because the concrete of the pillar had to be very thick to be strong enough to support the house. There's is a hollow tube in the middle of the pillar but this tube is to narrrow to have place for an elevator. The water pipe/drain goes through this hollow tube

This is my least favorite Lautner house. It's kind of a one liner...not much mystery about it. His other projects are so well integrated into the landscape they become part of the site and reveal themselves slowly to the visitor...similar to exploring a natural feature of the landscape. That philosophy is much closer to Lautner's mentor...Frank Lloyd Wright. "A house should be of the hill, not on the hill" . Chemosphere is definetly "on the hill"

Yes, compared to other designs by Lautner, you can easily oversee the lay out of this house. But still it construction and history are very interesting. Althoug maybe not very beautifull, it's without a doubt iconic!

It is of the hill. It is like a tree growing up from the ground. From a distance when you can not see the lower part due to the trees around it, it is like a eagle's nest high up in the tree tops.

It's basically an "unbuildable" site. To make it buildable they'd have to scarf the heck out of it, construct a huge, ugly and expensive retaining wall which would jack the costs way up and create an ugly wall. Lautner was not interested in doing any of that to the hill, so the solution was to create a platform to build on. It all worked out and it works for that particular steep site. Most of his homes are either on hills or on the beach, not so much in the flats. And he didn't set out to deliberately design a spaceship. It's all about the inside, not the "style" of the outside. Lautner didn't do "style" or facades. He couldn't have cared less for that because that's not real architecture.

@@SuperJobbel these other buildings are small, ones like playhouse size and the other a medium sized room. They look like fiberglass or plastic. I just found it interesting since they are on near by properties you can see from the chemosphere.
