I hope your New Year is off to a great start❤💙To kick off 2023 I decided to dive into SUPERMAN (1978) and let me just say it did NOT disappoint🤩For a 70's movie I was thoroughly impressed by the effects in this movie and would have to say my favorite parts were getting to see superman gracefully flying around😄I loved Christopher Reeve's performance, so sincere and genuine, may he rest in peace. Few movies really capture the magic of a classic superhero like Superman:The Movie. Laurenn, you NAIL it with the "no one pays attention to Clark." That's exactly how he pulls off the ruse. And Christopher Reeve played that dichotomy beautifully.

The reason the movie still holds together so well is the way they filmed it. Most of those flying segments, with the heavy close ups, were done with rear projection. Where as most of those effects even then, would have been done in front of blue/green screens, they had the smart idea to film the backgrounds alone, then get a big back screen to project the visuals on, and then hang the actors out in front of it, in front of the camera.

I really love the city of Metropolis it's an art deco Tomorrowland with amazing retro futuristic 1950s Americana that have a mix of modern designs that are still inspired by Art Deco. Of course for budget reasons the city in this film just looks like New York City and unfortunately so does other renditions of the city in live action but when the city is done justice it can look amazing for example the Superman Animated Series from the 1990s. Gotham is very much a city that's been done extremally well in live action from Tim Burtons films to Batman Begins so I'm hoping one day we'll see Metropolis done well in live action. In terms of where the city is located in most renditions it's usually in Delaware or New York just north for Gotham City. If you want a continuation of the 70s Superman I highly recommend the Superman 78 comics that released in mid 2022. There's also Batman 89 comics that act as a continuation of the Burton Batman films taking place after Batman Returns even hinting at both Superman 1978 and Batman 1989 taking place within the same universe. Tim Burton was actually in early production of a Superman film in the 1990s but it never happened. But even if there not connected the Superman 1978 hint at their being a Batman and the Batman 89 comics hint at their being a Superman so who knows.

I saw this movie when I was 3 years old. It's my only memory from that age. I still remember sitting on my father's shoulders waiting in line which was wrapped around the theater twice 😂 My parents heard me humming the Superman theme for weeks afterwards.

Superman does have the ability to make things levitate and "fly" along with him, so yes, Lois was flying as long as he was touching her.

I grew up watching this movie that came out 1 month after I was born. Watched it and dissected it 1000 ways. And i just noticed when Pa Kent was talking to Clark after he beat the bullies home…how his red button up shirt was opened in a way that his fruit of the looms undershirt looked like his Superman family crest. I know. Im 45 years late 😂

Back in the ‘70s, there was a pop-pseudo-science theory that if you reversed the Earth’s rotation, time would move backwards. Didn’t make much sense to me even back then as a kid, but that’s the basis for that scene.

That final moment, as he flies by, he breaks the fourth wall by looking into the camera and smiles at the audience. Christopher Reeve's own moral compass was very much like Superman, and he captured all the qualities of the character. No one will ever do it better. RIP

The first time I saw Reeve in costume was around 1978 on a full page newspaper ad for Superman the movie. The pure stoicism he portrayed in that pose was mesmerizing. It wasn’t just good photography. It was a genuine reflection of Reeve’s personality.

I knew a woman who went to watch Superman for the umpteenth zillionth time back in (by then!) 1979. She told me that during one screening, she watched it behind a mom who had brought her little girl along with her. The girl was awed by the movie! As that final moment approached, my friend leaned forward and said to the child, "If you'd keep watching, Superman will smile at you!" And a moment later--of course!--he did! The little girl just went bananas!!! :)

The best explanation I've heard for people not realizing Clark is Superman is a quote from the comics. When Superman revealed his identity to the Justice League, the Flash responded "Superman has a secret identity? He doesn't even wear a mask!" It never occurs to people that Superman would ever be anyone else, so no one looks.

Lex Luthor had a similar reaction in a late 80s comic. His computer worked out that Superman was Clark Kent and Lex's assistant stated how she would never have though it but given the evidence it's totally logical. Lex refused to believe it: "Yes...a soulless machine might make that deduction. But not Lex Luthor! I know that no man with the power of Superman would ever pretend to be a mere human! Such power is to be constantly exploited. Such power is to be used!!" He just couldn't accept that a god-like being would want to hide his true self so he could be accepted as a regular human being.

You want legit explanation for why no one mistakes Clark for Superman? I mean the nerdy explanation that's actually canon part of the lore? It's a lot of little factors, like him slightly slouching as Clark, but really comes down to the glasses. Yes, the infinitely spoofed and joked glasses. Being an alien, Kal-El's eyes are unsually vibrant blue, that can't happen in human eyes and the glasses dim the color just enough to make Clark look "normal".

I think Christopher Reeve was pure magic in this role. He seemed like a genuinely good human. I recommend continuing with Superman II. Terrence Stamp as General Zod is one of the great villain performances.

That one lil scene in Lois' apartment especially that I was happy Lauren pointed out too, where he takes off the glasses and he stands up straight and his demeanour is changed and you can tell that while the clothing is Clark, that's Superman standing there momentarily before he changes his mind about telling her and he goes back into his Clark persona. Love that bit of acting. Showing that it ain't just the costume, it's the performance.

From a sharper tone voice when he is playing Clark to a deeper and confident tone when he takes his glasses off and back to the sharp tone again when he retakes his Clark role. Mr. Reeve really did a great job playing this clumsy character in many ways (but also lovely) in opposition to Superman.

@@trhansen3244 Yeah, kinda weird how the actors with Oscar wins in other movies, Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman, get top billing while the guy actually playing Superman, the lead character the movie is named after, has to come after them. Hackman does well with Lex but Brando made nearly 4 million dollars just for that rather functional performance as Jor-El (again using his cue cards cos he didn't like to actually learn lines). I get that Reeve was unknown then so it made more finanicial sense to have the better known actors above him. I guess. Reeve certainly became very well known from this film though. He did struggle with being typecast as it though. He's a great actor in general when given the chance. I also really like the oddly quaint time-travel romance 'Somewhere in Time' he did with Jane Seymour.

37:35 Of all the "screams of grief" ever put to film, and they're uncountable, Superman's was the most powerfully raw and heartbreaking. Christopher Reeve deserved all the kudos just for that moment alone.

I was 8 years old when my Mother took me to see this in the theatre. I remember the "Destruction of Krypton" sequence traumatizing me! All those falling people! That said- this movie set the Gold Standard for all Superhero films to come! The Superman Saves Lois/Helicopter scene stills give me goosebumps to this day! Loved you reaction!

I have to disagree. The first big budget superhero film was in the 1960s. Batman starring Adam West and Henry Winkler. The effects weren't as good as Superman but they were still quite impressive for a film made a decade earlier.

Superman The Movie is exquisitely "comic book". It's such a perfect amalgamation of the melodrama, the silliness, the self importance, and the aw, shucks earnestness of the comics. It's probably my favourite comic book movie of all time, it's so pure. Everything about it just works. Like, the costume should be silly, but you never doubt it for a second. Christopher Reeve just *is* Superman so completely that you buy into everything about him.

I remember how back in 1978 I was both excited and nervous before the movie premiered. I was keenly aware of the "Batman 1966" effect and worried that Hollywood would screw up with Superman. I had a friend who got to see the movie on opening day and I asked him, "Can this guy ACT?" My friend gave me this very broad smile and beamed, "OH, YES!!!!" Then, he gushed about how great the movie was!" I went to see it the next day! :)

For the longest time this and its sequel were the only superhero movies that I had to watch. It wasn't until Batman 89 that I had more. And if you watch the sequels, you will notice that each new director seems to want to give Kal El some kind of weird new power. He will also get a weird one-off power in the comics from time to time, where people will say, "I didn't know he could do that?" because he never did before, and never will again. Turning back time is one of those powers.

Yeah. Up until the reboot of Superman with 1986's Man of Steel (the comic, not the film) Supes had gained far too many extra powers it was becoming very difficult to write any threats for him. His power set got stripped back down to the basic iconic set (strength, speed, flight, heat vision, x-ray vision, frost breath) and all the sillier powers gone. He had indeed travelled back in time in the pre-Crisis era comics and this movie is from 1978 so is before the 1986 reboot. So it's ok. As are the extra powers in Superman II displayed by Supes and Non's crew. Sorta. even flinging his own chest symbol at them :)

In 1978. I was 6 years old. My parents took me out of school early one day and took my little brother and me to see 'Superman' on the big screen. After 'Star Wars' just a year earlier, this film had a tremendous effect on me. My whole life...I have been a Superman fan and a fan of Christopher Reeve. Christopher Reeve was a Juilliard School Drama student who before 'Superman' was a stage actor. It was this film that made him a star. When he attended Juilliard, he also met his best friend in show business. He was roommates with Robin Williams, and the two were very close for the rest of their lives. When Chris had the accident that left him a quadriplegic, the first friend that was by his bedside was Robin, pretending to be a near-sighted Russian proctologist. Chris was just able to laugh, and said to Robin, "Thank you, brother." This was what help Chris live and become a voice for spinal cord injury research until he passed in 2004. He made us all believe a man could fly, and until he died we all believed that he would walk again. He was a Superman in real life. Anyway, Chris saw his time as Superman/Kal-El/Clark Kent as stewardship. He was the steward of the character for a brief time and paid it the respect it deserved. As Clark, he took inspiration from a few roles of Cary Grant where that legendary leading man was in nerdy and awkward roles. To help him delineate the roles of Clark and Superman, he parted his hair on opposite sides. Little things like this helped him sell the character. Add to the mix the direction of Richard Donner, who although he did action amazingly well was always regarded as an actor's director. This was actually filmed alongside 'Superman II', which was way before 'Lord of the Rings' did the same thing. Unfortunately, the story behind the scenes was heartbreaking. The Salkinds, who were the producers, were kind of sleazy and nasty pieces of work. They hired Donner to direct, with a $1 million salary, the dates for Gene Hackman and Marlon Brando's availability, and a telephone book-sized script co-written by Oscar-winner Mario Puzo (the author of 'The Godfather' novel, and co-writer of the screenplay for those films) that was a mess. There was no set budget, no set schedule, and a set release date for the first film. When Donner had to stop working on the filming just to get the first film ready in time with all the effects, music, and editing done, he thought he was going to go right back to work on the second film. The film was released...and was a HUGE success, and the Salkinds fired him! I'm telling you this because there are two versions of 'Superman II'...the Theatrical Cut and The Donner Cut. Both are a lot of fun, but the Donner Cut (released in 2006) is a more accurate version of Donner's vision. The Theatrical is different in many ways as there were some re-writes Richard Fleisher (who is credited as the director of S2) demanded, but a lot of scenes were filmed by Donner. Technically, the end for S1 is not the way it was supposed to end, it was the way S2 was to end. As I said, both films are lots of fun, but I do prefer the Donner Cut...so my vote is for that one, if you decide to continue with this one. 'Superman III' is fun, but it's more of a Richard Pryor movie than a Superman one. 'Superman IV: The Quest for Peace' is a heartbreaking trainwreck that could have had a wonderful final performance of Reeve's (as he co-wrote the story)...but a small budget, crappy effects, a hack director, and a worse producer team than the Salkinds (Golam and Globus, schlock producers extraordinaire of the 80s and 90s) make this one almost totally avoidable. It has many core cast members return on the upside, but...yeah... One fun part of the cast is Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men, and Ducky in 'Pretty In Pink') playing Lex Luthor's nephew...and in 2018, Cryer would take on the role of Lex Luthor very successfully in the 4th season of 'Supergirl' for the CW, and would appear in 3 seasons as a recurring character, and be a part of the Arrowverse crossover event, 'Crisis On Infinite Earths' on all the CW/DC comics shows 'Arrow', 'The Flash', 'Supergirl', and "Legends of Tomorrow'. A lot of actors have played Superman: Brandon Routh (Superman Returns, and Crisis On Infinite Earths), Henry Cavill (who has been the best thing about the DCEU with Man of Steel, Batman VS Superman, Justice League, Shazam!, and Black Adam), Taylor Hoechlin (the Arrowverse shows), Tim Daly (voicing Superman in the animated series), and George Newburn (another Superman voice actor in some WB animated films). But Christopher Reeve has always been and will always be my Superman...may he rest in peace.

Hi Laurenn. The scene where Clark first becomes Superman at the Fortress of Solitude and flies for the first time was met with thunderous applause(I was there at 10 years old). It was literally the first time a man flew convincingly in a movie and it was iconic. We also cheered together when Superman saved Lois and the helicopter....I still get chills watching those two scenes in this film.

This movie means a ton to me, and it's one of the reasons Superman's been one my favorite fictional characters, and role models, since I was a kid. There have been many good to great Supermen like Tim Daly, George Newbern, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill, but Christopher Reeve will always be the definitive and perfect Superman. He was also a real life Superman, and you can't help but be inspired and motivated by his story, and his good, humble, and optimistic energy. I love that you enjoyed Reeve's performance, and picked up on all of the nuances he put into the character P.S. This is one of your best videos, and I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to your reaction to Superman II. Both the theatrical cut and the Donner cut.

I think Lois is perfect in this: the tough, talks-a-mile-a-minute energy: I completely get why Clark likes her...and he totally falls for her when he's Clark and sees her in all her manic glory, not when she's making goo-goo eyes at him as Superman. That "almost going to cry" smile he has after he changes time itself to bring her back from the dead just to have her immediately start ranting at him tells the whole story. Plus, it's not like she's mean to Clark, she's just a little dismissive (which is the reaction he's going for from people with his secret identity act) and not romantically interested.

What I love the most about Christopher Reeve's performance is that you can physically see him change from how he acts as Clark to Superman. He hunches his back, combs his hair and puts on a voice. Its just great and I believe he was a method actor but yea rip to him and he was great in Smallville when he cameoed in there for some episodes too. Always thought Christopher Reeve's accident was kind of dumb (me having been coerced into horse back riding as a kid, and having had my ample share of nasty accidents) For quite a few years I thought people were overreacting, when they talked about his performance as Superman But nowadays, I AM convinced, there was a _certain_ magic, a believability/solemnity to his portrayal, that will never really get duplicated (Cavill gets sort of close, sometimes) RIP to Christopher Reeve, the one and only SUPERMAN!

But still it's really not difficult to get it right. I saw a tweet a month or two ago that said "Christopher Reeves will always be the best superman" along with the poster for the film WHICH HAD HIS NAME ON IT IN BIG BOLD LETTERS and they STILL got it wrong. One of the reasons the flying looks so good is that they used front projection, where the background image is actually projected over the actors, using a beamsplitter so the projector can be right next to the camera (and at right angles, with the beamsplitter 45 degrees to both). What Superman did was to make the front projector not just a still projector, but a motion picture projector, so the backgrounds are in motion. There are sychronized zoom lenses on both projector and camera, which when used together make Superman and Lois fly towards you or away from you, as the background stays "the same size". The whole affair was mounted on a up and down and side to side crane, and on top of all of that, every single element of it could be guided by hand, or recorded into an 8-bit computer and played back into the fully robotic rig. Zoran Perisic is the name to look up. He had been a "blob artist" on 2001: a Space Odyssey (1968), and probably became aware of front projection through Kubrick's use of it in that film (though Perisic himself did not apparently work on the front projection shots in 2001). The other essential element of front projection is a retro reflective screen behind the actors. Not like the diffusion screens we see in theaters, with light thrown every which way from it, but 3M Scotchlite material, which has millions of tiny glass beads in a transparent vinyl substrate. The tiny glass spheres send light exactly back where it came from (back towards the beamsplitter in front of the camera, where it will be recorded along with the foreground actors). Superman's parents and the citizens of Krypton are wearing costumes made of Scotchlite: they glow so powerfully because instead of a projector hitting them through the beamsplitter, there's simply a theatrical spotlight. Effective or not, this does show how immensely more retro-reflective Scotchlite is (its primary use is in highway signs, since an approaching driver's eyes are very close to the same angle to the sign as the light from the driver's headlights). This is also why, in the flying scenes in Superman, you can't see even a trace of the projected background on Superman or Lois: the screen behind them is so bright that they had to have plenty of extra stage lighting on them, so they wouldn't appear as dark silhouettes, and this extra stage lighting on the actors easily overwhelms the part of the front projection that falls on them. It's really a slick way of doing things, the benefit is that you don't have to do any compositing of film at all: everything's done in the same pass, in-camera, and the director can see exactly how it's going to look ahead of time, through the viewfinder.

Also, remember what Jor El told him...'it is forbidden for you to interfere with human history.' This was the live action version of Silver age Superman. I'm Brazilian and SUPERMAN for me is the best superhero movie of all time! I watched it at the cinema when I was a child and I still feel like a child today and I am enchanted by the action scenes and special effects! For me it will always be a wonderful and untouchable classic.

I wasn't even alive for nearly 12 years after this came out and I still think it holds up as THE true and believable depiction of Superman. The special effects live up to their hype. I really enjoyed your reaction to this one, it made me very happy. I saw this with my folks in the theater when it was brand new, and I had just turned 11 years old. The late Christopher Reeve's performance as Clark Kent and Superman absolutely makes the film, along with the amazing John Williams score (to this day I listen to the Superman theme song when I want to pump myself up before important endeavors, heh). As for the special effects, yeah, in 1978 we hadn't seen anything like it. It was dazzling on the big screen. But Chris was the absolute best. His performance is so charming and sincere, and, as you noted, he is amazing at making the flying look super-graceful. My mom was especially taken with him, and my dad couldn't even be jealous because we *all* wanted to be him. Though his life was cut short by tragedy, to the very end Reeve remained a truly amazing, courageous, and inspirational person. I have to admit, I'm also a big fan of Superman for how pure and good he is as a character. Heroes like Superman and Batman really informed my personal sense of right and wrong when I was a little kid, and it's good to know that the kind of emotions this movie inspired in me as a child 4 1/2 decades ago are still evoked - the same kind of warm, positive, lovely feelings. Again, this reaction really made me happy. PS: Regarding Mrs. Teshmacher kissing Superman when he was incapacitated, all I can tell you is that back then people didn't think it was creepy when a woman did it. Superman was such a nice guy he didn't even make her feel bad about it. That's not an excuse, just an explanation. It doesn't play very well today, but it is a pretty good example of how society has evolved in 44 years.

HIs performance was top notch and combined with that John Williams music, ahhhh *chefs kiss* 🤩 I was really impressed by the effects and the use of miniatures, I thought it looked great. Superman is so pure and has a golden heart, how he carried himself, how he interacted with people, what a kind, loving soul. Miss Teschmacher was something else lol, I do realize like you said back in the 70s that was probably a bit more acceptable. Nowadays, that doesn't really fly, at least not in my book. Her role is reduced in Superman II and she doesn't appear in the next 2 at all. Unless you're referring to Man of Steel, which I haven't seen in it's entirety, I suspect you're referring to the girl in Superman III. The main villain's apparent girlfriend in that movie is indeed forward with Superman and definitely takes advantage of him when he's in a compromised state, but that isn't Ms. Tessmacher.

I was 6 years old when I saw this in theaters. Christopher Reeve IS Superman. Even with all the Marvel and DC movies, the helicopter rescue is still my favorite scene of any superhero movie. The build-up, the John Williams score, the costume reveal is just perfect!

What makes this film very memorable is the way that they portrayed him. In that we get to see a superhero, fail and what he does to him. Superman can do all these amazing things. he can fly, he can blow freezing breath, he can shoot heated lasers from his eyes but with all of that, in this film when hes really put under pressure he can't perform, Even with his powers. That's great writing in itself the fact that you can give a guy who's practically a god and once you put enough pressure on him he can't do what he's supposed to do that's what this movie did. It took a powerful person and shrink him down that's why this movie is so good is that they were willing to go to that extreme and I think that's what's missing in a lot of these other superhero films is that they don't humanize the characters enough. We should feel sad from Clark, because he was sent here to protect as many people as possible but yet if he's put in the situation where he's just the only person doing it he can't he can't be at 10 places at once. The other reason why this movie is such a great film it's that as an audience member you get to become friends with Clark Kent/Superman it's not just you know he's a guy, he's a superhero that saves everybody and that's it he's a person, he's someone that you can talk to, you can have a conversation if you have issues, he's a real person he's a real breathing person who hurts just as much as we do that's why that scene between Lois and Superman is so important because we finally get to meet Superman and ask all the many questions that we've always wondered and when christopherie says "a friend." that's exactly what he's supposed to be. Sure he's from another planet but yet he's more human than we are.....

What was interesting about this reaction is that you didn't know all the characteristics of Superman before going into the movie. A lot of the tropes from this movie, such as no one recognizing nerdy Clark as Superman, or why Lois is the constant damsel in distress, comes from the comics, so the mindset of what made a man, and a woman's role, is coming from when the comic was popular in the 1940s.

I saw this in 1978 at age 18, the first weekend, after following the news about the movie's production, hoping that the guy who would play Superman could actually act and BE Superman...Well, I was over the moon to see that Christopher Reeve WAS BORN TO PLAY SUPERMAN!!! Watching this through your eyes was simply reliving this great movie memory all over again. Your enthusiasm and delight...I loved your comments throughout the film and kept smiling because I knew what was about to happen next and couldn't wait to see your reactions!!! Ah..this was pure pleasure, my dear. Thank you so much for this gift, helping me relive a special first viewing of one of my all-time favorite movies! Superman is all about optimism and charm; this movie captured the essence of Superman--and then some! BTW, try to check out the 1950s George Reeves "The Adventures of Superman TV series" sometime. Reeves and Reeve were both born to play Superman! They played Superman/Clark in completely different ways, yet they were BOTH valid interpretations of the character. The first two seasons of the series were the best. Every episode was a charm offensive, much like this movie! Trivia: when young Clark outraces the train in Smallville, the passengers were played by the first Superman (the old serials) and his Lois Lane--Kirk Alyn and Noel Neil! You can see Lake Powell AZ when Superman is chasing the missiles. Christopher Reeve is Amazing as Superman & Clark Kent. Kudos on the John Williams guess 👍 Definitely recommend watching SUPERMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES(1996) 👌 The 1st Three episodes are the pilot episodes that kick off the series. Definitely should grab the DVD so you can watch it as a short animated SUPERMAN movie without any glitches Zack Snyder Definitely revived the SUPERMAN lore with MAN OF STEEL (2013) Henry Cavill did a tremendous job as Superman, he almost looked like Christopher Reeve in one scene from the movie. This is the original Superhero blockbuster that so many others have borrowed from, which is fitting, since Superman was the original comic book superhero from 1938 (as seen in the intro). I saw this in theater, and it was such an impactful moment of my childhood. The tag-line of the movie was "You will believe a man can fly". Christopher Reeve was a pilot and brought that knowledge to how he maneuvered his body in those scenes. It's dated, but at the time, the effects were stellar, and you have to watch movies like this through the eyes of the audience from the time, which it seems you did. This movie isn't perfect, but it has great performances, music, and is so charming in how it captures the spirit of Superman like no other incarnation. And for a generation, Christopher Reeve will always be THE REAL Superman. Also worth mentioning...he didn't turn back time, but flew so fast, that he, himself, traveled back in time. Still doesn't make complete sense, but you have to go with it at that point. lol Superman II is worth your time and picks right up after this. Be sure to watch the theatrical version. There was a later cut released from the original director, Richard Donner, but it is more of a fan experiment. Also very good is the later version of Superman from 2013, titled "Man of Steel".

I was born in '78and grew up with the Christopher Reeve's movies. From a kid's POV, they were all awesome. The first 2 are pretty good but the ones that follow are SUPER cheesy. Superman Returns from 2005 was good and I really enjoyed "Man of Steel" when it came out in 2013. Henry Cavill makes a great Superman. However, Reeve's Superman is the one, I feel, started adding depth to the character. In the 40-50s cartoons and TV series, he was just the superhero that fought evil and bad guys, nothing more. He ever really struggled and we never got to see any real character development. I hope you watch more of Superman in the future. Happy New Year. First off I love your reaction and I see that you thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Second i think the reason why Lois or for that matter everyone who's not paying attention to Clark. Is because Clark is deliberately misleading people to ignore him or take him for granted. I recommend you read Superman Birthright by Mark Waid and Leinel Yu, it's a 12 issue comic that tells the story of Superman's origin. Anyway in the first few issues they explained why Clark had to disguise himself and make him meek and self conscious. Also in that comic Clark and Lex Luthor went to school together and they formed a friendship. And unlike the movie, Pa/Jonathan Kent lives in the comic books. It's ironic that in every Superman movie Pa Kent dies but in the comics he's pretty much alive and is an integral part of Superman's life. Hope you get to read Superman Birthright as it's a good modern version of Superman's origin.

Its the first super hero movie I ever saw. I believe either it was on tv or my Dad rented it on VHS in the very early 80's. Young Clark running beside the train looks pretty dated but I still love this classic. One small thing I would have changed is that they shouldn't have made the crystal green because it looks to much like Kryptonite. Christopher Reeve was a wonderful Superman. However Superman never should have told anyone his weaknesses. There's being honest but then there's being stupid. Sadly Clark had to much faith in humanity. My favorite as a kid was Superman 2 So I hope you'll check it out next.

Technically does it in Superman II The Richard Donner Cut for reasons. It's basically the same ending as this one. I think it was intended for that one but ugh I dunno. It's one of the reasons I still prefer the theatrical cut (or extended TV cut) over the Donner cut.

@@carn9507 That's because if you watched the Donner Cut, it was explained that the missile which Supes sent out into space in the first movie exploded; with the energy wave cracking the phantom zone in which Zod and the others were imprisoned. So technically in his version the reversal of Time only happened once.

This was the first major super hero movie and given the head space of the time period it is amazing they took the subject sooooo seriously. I watched a video once that explained why the intro was so important. There's no action, it's just him saving a cat, showing he cares about small things. And it shows the difference between him and humanity. He gives the cat back, and the child is harsh to the cat. Superman says there's no need. I was 7 years old when Superman The Movie opened in 1978, and I cried my little boy eyes out to my mom when I couldn't go see it on opening night (It sold out!!) She took me to the Egyptian in Hollywood the next day where it was playing, and I was estactic!! I had the standee poster, the toys and promo movie book for the film, and Christopher Reeve is and forever will be the ONLY Superman for me!! Yes, back then the special effects were awesome, and watching Superman fly (and believing like Richard Donner's movie poster said we would) was unbelievable!! John Williams was at his very peak during this era in cinema as well, creating all-time classic soundtracks for Jaws (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Star Wars (1977), Superman (1978), Raiders of the Lost Ark/Indiana Jones (1981) and E.T. the Extraterrestrial(1982)!! He is a member of what I call the 4 J's composers who ruled the 1970s and 1980s: John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith (ALIEN-1979), James Horner (Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan-1982) and John Carpenter (HalloweeN-1978). You really need to check out The Adventures of Superman TV series from 1952. It stars George Reeves as Superman ironically no relation to Christopher Reeve. I think you would get a kick out of it and see how different things were back then.

The tag line for this movie was, "You will believe a man can fly", and we did. Absolutely terrific performances all around. If you're planning on watching Superman 2, I'd recommend watching both the theatrical and Richard Donner cuts. They're two completely different movies.

Superman (1978) really brought superhero genre mainstream and pretty much set the formula for future movies, even today which you will notice in some more modern superhero films. It's definitely a product of it's time with some cheesiness and the Miss Tessmacher kiss. I always get a little teary eyed at the final scene when he breaks the 4th wall at the end and smiles at the audience. A bit of a heads up going forward for the sequel, there are two cuts of the movie (the theatrical Lester cut and the Donner version) which have a very different vibes from each other and have some completely different scenes/endings. Long story short spoiler free, Superman 1 & 2 were filmed simultaneously and meant to be one complete story. The director Richard Donner was let go after 19 months of filming with the sequel being 75% shot and Richard Lester was hired to finish the film. Most of us remember the theatrical version but the Donner cut is worth watching as well.

When Clark is running past the train, the little girl who sees him is Lois Lane. Her parents were played by Noel Neill (Lois Lane from The Adventures of Superman) and Kirk Alyn (The first person to play Superman in live action in the 1940s).. And Noel Neill wore one of her outfits from the old TV show.

Additinoally, Noel Neill first played Lois in the Kirk Alyn serials, and reprised her role starting with the second season of "The Adventures of Superman" when Season One TV-Lois ,Phyllis Coates, didn't return.

concerning Lois not knowing that Clark Kent is Superman, truth is, people only see what they want to see Clark changes his stance, his voice, his demeanor, how he treats people... the way he presents himself is how he wants to be perceived... and no one expects Clark Kent, one of the most mild mannered, humble, and timid individuals you could meet, to be a powerful, flying man from another planet who can lift another person and a helicopter at the same time, or fly so fast he can turn back time.

@@LoveLaurenn The world rotating and things going backwards isn't supposed to be taken literally. He's going back in time, not reversing it. But yeah the way they depicted ended up confusing most people when it was intended to do the opposite.

I adored this film as a kid. The effects are great for the time, and Christopher Reeves's wire work is superb, you really do believe a man can fly! Reeves is superb in the role, and the transition from the nerdy, shy, awkward Clarke Kent, to the confident, strong superhero is great acting, and he changes his whole persona in one scene. Margo Kidder is superb as well, I love her. This really did launch a thousand other superhero films, but this, and Superman II were all that we really had and I loved it! Christopher Reeve was and is Superman, and what happened to him in real life was tragic.

Loving your reactions. Part of the original tag line for Superman is "...more powerful than a locomotive" hence the racing the train. Some of these scenes of Superman saving trains and reforming the earth are from the Fleischer superman cartoons in the 1940's, loved it. This one and the next (Superman 2) are good then things go off the rails. I like Superman returns staring Brandon Routh. I do hope you react to that one. Happy New Year!

Yes! In fact, the movie works in the entire Superman legend. He is introduced as a strange visitor from another planet, with powers and abilities beyond those of mortal men, and is shown being more powerful than a locomotive, being faster than a speeding bullet, bending steel with his bare hands (the train rails,) leaping over a tall building (The Daily Planet) in a single bound, changing the course of a mighty river (the dam scene,) while being disguised as mild-mannered reporter, Clark Kent--as Perry White points out--working for a great Metropolitan newspaper--and fighting a neverending battle for truth, justice, and the American Way--as he explains to Lois Lane. The movie hits all the points of the classic legend! They worked it all in! :)

Still one of the best superhero movies ever made. And just FYI originally the director, Richard Donner, was going to direct the sequel, and filmed some scenes. The first missile he launches into space, was supposed to break the prison (phantom zone) the criminals from Krypton were sent to. This idea was changed when Donner was fired. Many years later, he was finally able to release his version of Superman 2 called the Donner Cut. Personally, I loved some parts of his version and some parts of the original theatrical release. I edited things together to make my own perfect version of Superman 2.
