Superman '78 - Retro Movie Review Highlight
SUPERMAN ’78: On the first episode of “The Road to The Justice League,” Sammy and Ian start off with a huge blank spot in Sammy’s film viewing library, the quintessential superhero film from 1978 “Superman!” Will Sammy fight for truth, justice, and the American way? Is Ian faster than a locomotive? FIND OUT TONIGHT!!!
Superman is a 1978 superhero film directed by Richard Donner and based on the DC Comics character of the same name. The film depicts Superman's origin, including his infancy as Kal-El of Krypton and his youthful years in the rural town of Smallville. Disguised as reporter Clark Kent, he adopts a mild-mannered disposition in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane, while battling the villainous Lex Luthor.
Superman features an ensemble cast of Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, and Margot Kidder.

As someone who grew up in the 70s, I can tell you the only thing we had up until this film was the cartoon SuperFriends show that came on Saturday mornings. This movie BLEW our minds! I was 7 when we saw this in our theater.

mike grady my parents used to take us to the drive in. It was crazy! On one screen, you'd look ahead and see Return of the Jedi. Then you'd look behind and see hardcore porn! My parents wouldn't let me look back but the car had rearview mirrors so... 😱

Timothy Lewis Seriously, drive ins had pornos? Or do you mean exploitation movies, out of curiosity! I would love to go back in time to the 70s for a day or two just to see what the old drive ins were like!

Adam W my parents used to take us to the drive-in all the time in the early 80's. And a girl I dated in 1997 actually took me to a drive-in in Atlanta GA (I was so lame I actually watched the movie instead of making out with her)! I imagine there's still a couple around, somewhere. I was just a kid but I recall seeing EVERYTHING. Maybe it was softcore Cinemax stuff. I'm not sure. Plus I imagine whatever was shown depended on the laws in the area and the theater owner.

8:41 For real....the 1978 classic had John Kent's death very tragic and sad because there was NO WAY Superman could've saved him. But in MOS, Clark could've easily ran to save his dad, but his dad just said "Nope." The dad in MOS also made it look like Clark doesn't really need to be a hero.....so inspiring, whereas in the 1978 version, his dad gave Clark something to aspire to be.

I saw Superman 78 after I saw The Dark Knight Trilogy and even Man of Steel and I have to say: Out of all of those Superman 78 is in my opinion the "superior" movie. Even with those old effects were they used projected images in behind and even remote control Superman-drones, you still believe a man can fly. Christopher Reeve was, is and always will be Superman. - I'm an amateur musician and I've made a Superman remix a few weeks back, enjoy: goo.gl/Y7EUS1

Superman did not reverse the rotation of the planet. He was flying so crazy fast, it appeared to be going backwards from his point of view. That’s because he was going back in time one whole hell of a lot faster than 88 MPH. And no, where he was going, he didn’t need roads.

The value of the first Superman movie, with Christopher Reeve, cannot be emphasized enough. This film was a proof of concept, in that before this Richard Donner classic, superhero adaptations were always a bit cheesy, mainly meant to be consumed by children. Very few movie producers would, before the 78 Superman, risk spending millions of dollars to make a superhero film. With the 78 Superman movie, Donner demonstrated that there can be enough real charm, engrossing action, plot and superb acting in a superhero film to captivate adult minds as well as the minds of children. The 78 Superman movie is the reason why modern superhero franchises are viable. The 78 Superman movie proved to Hollywood that you could make a film about a guy in underwear and tights, that could be taken seriously by all audience members. Every superhero film franchise owes a debt of gratitude to Richard Donner, Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, the rest of the cast, the writers, producers, and all the pioneering special effects guys behind this film.

MoS showed how much he respected his father. Even to the point he let him die. He loved him so much and trusted him so much,he stayed under the bridge. I was maybe 3-4 when I saw Superman The Movie on TV. That movie is straight up magical no matter what age you are when you watch it. I loved seeing you both getting so pumped and excited and taking a moment to respect things like John Williams score. When I was a kid I was convinced if I listened to it long enough I’d unlock the code to fly. One other moment in the movie that still warms my heart so much is just the simple flyby at the end where Superman smiles at the audience. Such a brilliant way of breaking the fourth wall. My mom primed me for that moment when we watched it on TV. “Just watch Superman will smile at you,” she said. I didn’t believe her until the moment it actually happened. I went nuts with pure happiness just because Superman smiled at ME. That’s why this movie means something to me and others. It took something that could have been seen as silly and it put so much heart into it that you were won over. And to this day I would have loved being in a theater on opening night cheering him on with the helicopter rescue. Amazing!

The problem I had with Man of Steel's Superman was the disregard for consistency or growth. Clark starts out as a guy who wants to use his powers to save people, but his dad tells him not to. And the reason why is a neat idea... but when his dad is about to die he tells Clark not to help, and Clark doesn't, which SHOULD'VE marked a DRASTIC change in his character going forward. The movie forgets this change when we see him use his powers to destroy someone's truck, and to save random people in an oil-rig fire. So, wait... he let his dad fucking DIE to keep his secret safe, but he risks exposing it later anyway? ...why? Then it gets WORSE! Clark, for no reason, stops caring about innocent people when he fights Zod. Clark (not Zod) takes his super-powered fight to his hometown, blowing up a corn-silo and a gas-station in the process. Which would've been a great chance for character growth. But here's the thing... *SMALLVILLE'S DESTRUCTION HAS ZERO CONSEQUENCE on the rest of the movie.* In fact, that fight could've happened ENTIRELY in a cornfield with NO changes made to the rest of the film. Which tells me it was really there for product placement and disaster porn. The two things that were blatantly on display during the fight. If your Superman is putting people in danger and it doesn't effect his character or the rest of the film, you FAILED to write Superman. You'd think he'd learn some kind of lesson about keeping his fights away from populated areas, but then he's the one taking Zod BACK to metropolis after Zod took him into space. Not kidding. Watch that scene again. Zod takes Superman to space. Superman brings Zod back to the city! The movie is so ass-backward in it's handling of Superman's character it's tragic. Then he kills Zod and cries about it. Okay, you've killed god-knows how many people with your reckless bullshit but... fine. So you think that at the *END OF THE FUCKING MOVIE* Superman has FINALLY learned something or grown as a character, right? Nope. At the end of the film, Superman blows up a military drone in the middle of a road, right in front of two normal humans driving a car. Why not just blow it up off in the desert, away from the unprotected humans? Or better yet just PUT IT DOWN? Wouldn't that have shown the general (and the audience) you're not a destructive idiot anymore? I don't hate Man of Steel's Superman because he's not Christopher Reeves. I hate him because he's badly handled by people who didn't care.
@nooneofimportance2110
@nooneofimportance2110 6 жыл бұрын
Keibo, I'm going to say this first, but please don't hate me for it, I liked Man of Steel. I liked it, I didn't love it, adore it, or anything like that, just liked it. And I agree whole heartedly with what you said. Superman: the Movie is the vastly superior movie to Man of Steel, hands down, no contest. And it's NOT just nostalgia that makes me say that. Let's compare them. In Man of Steel a young Clark Kent saves a bus load of children from drowning and dying a horrible death ....... after several minutes. Then he goes off to sulk about it, and asks Kevin Costner (no he isn't Jonathan Kent, even if they tell us he is) if he should have let them die. (-_-) In Superman, Superman save a bus load of children from certain death in a watery grave without a moments hesitation, then after everyone is safe and secure, he goes off to save more people. And the best part is that it was a bus load of children that were not his closest friends, the girl he's always had a crush on, and pretty much everyone he knew and whom he had grown up with. And there are so many other examples like that.
@nooneofimportance2110
@nooneofimportance2110 6 жыл бұрын
The way Pa Kent dies, the battles with Zod in Superman II vs. the one in MoS. The Battle with Brainiac in S3 vs. the game of grab ass with the terraformer in MoS. There just isn't any real comparison except in SFX, and even then Superman beats out Man of Steel (and BvS, but the less said about that train wreck the better) in every way. I think the worst thing about MoS vs. Superman is that Cavill's character dawdles way too much, he doesn't just go in and DO SOMETHING!! He has to dawdle first, he can't just save people he has to wait to do anything. Superman does, Man of Steel dawdles and then, eventually does. And that's why Superman is better than Man of Steel will ever be.

+Nooneofimportance You're allowed to like the movie. I like parts of it. The music is great... and... ok, everything else infuriated me. I haven't even scratched the surface on how broken I think Man of Steel is... From the tired origin story, to the pointless addition of that stupid mcguffin that I already forgot the name of because I don't give a fuck. The gratuitous disaster porn that adds NOTHING of substance to the film. There is SO MUCH wrong with the movie and the reason it pisses me off is because it was FIXABLE!!!! *Here's an easy fix: THE MOVIE DIDN'T NEED KRYPTON.* That's right! That entire Krypton opening weakens the movie and should've been cut. Why? *Because it tells us nothing we either needed to know or don't find out later in the movie anyway.* But the real reason we shouldn't have seen Krypton directly is that it would've grounded us more in Clark Kent's perspective. Which I thought MOS wanted to do...? Clark doesn't remember his home-world! He feels alienated on Earth. Maybe give us a scene where he's feeling isolated from the world and looking up at the night sky to emphasize his longing to belong somewhere? The only time we needed to see anything of Krypton for ourselves was when Clark was being shown holograms of it by Russell Crowe. We learn about it like he learns about it. We become him. See how easy that change was? Millions of dollars could've been saved and the movie's main character and story would've been more engaging. Also a more mysterious Krypton would've been interesting. More interesting than the shit we got! That's just one change too. I got a whole fucking laundry list, dude.

The different deaths of Pa Kent are from two different perspectives. One is from a son feeling helpless to stop it. (78) The other is from a father's point of view (MOS), "I'd rather die to protect my son from what will happen to him" and Clark believing in his father and loving him enough to not save him as it is his last wish. One is "I couldn't protect my Dad" the other is "My Dad was trying to protect me". To me they are both great for the times they were filmed in.

The number one problem I have with this film is that people thinks this is a campy film. Superman is my favorite superhero movie hands down. I know there are corny scenes like the lois lane flying scene, but Donner has some serious stuff like Clark unable to save his father. Even the ending I think had a serious theme when *spoiler* Superman is willing to take the consequences of spinning the earth backwards in order to save Lois. I know logically it doesn't make sense, but the message it conveys has a perfect emotion of a guy doing everything he can in order to save someone he loves. Great review guys! You hit every nail of what I love about this movie and more.

To this day, I have yet to see a better Superman movie. Every aspect, except some of the humor, holds up today. I was eight when it came out. Spiderman was my favorite, but Superman was right up there. Donner made the first Blockbuster Super Hero movie. Topped even Barbarella! The Donner cut of Superman II comes very close to the first. I applaud you guys! You are from the generation that grew up with the modern day super hero films of the 2000’s and their superior special effects and yet you appreciate Superman ‘78. Thank you for giving credit where credit is due and praising the ground breaking work that went into making us believe a man could fly in a time before CGI effects. The problem with the failed modern day Superman played by Henry Cavil, is that he lacks the bright inspirational image of a optimistic hero who sees the good in anyone even criminals. The Cavil Superman suit used dark toned down colors which are not inspiring. They give a depressed somber mood. The only time a dark color scheme was used by Christopher Reeve’s Superman was when he became evil in Superman III. Under normal conditions his suit used bright vivid colors. Every modern day comic book movie owes Superman ‘78 a huge debt. It’s sad that the franchise crashed after Superman II. The original plan for Superman III was going to be far better than the Richard Pryor showcase we ended up with.

This film has so many poitive qualities but the obly one that resonates with me is Clark and the portrayal by both Reeves and the other fellow who played him in the Smallville scenes. Nothing else worked for me. Not a fan of Kidder's Lois Lane and as much as I love Hackman , his Lex didn't really work for me either. I will certainly not say that Superman Returns and Man of Steel are "better" films. But they got most of everything else I wanted from Kal. Hopefully when Cavil's Kal shows back up he will have shed all the angst and uncertainty and become close to the Superman that people prefer. A true beacon for hope.

I am going to be real. 40 years later, Superman 1 and Superman 2 is a classic because it achieved the impossible! 70's special effects looked cheap and stuff like Star Trek and Lost in Space was the norm. This movie, actually put in actor in a harness behind a greenscreen and add some fans for wind effects and you had a realistic illusion of a flying man. Then, Richard Donner had the balls to cast a unknown actor as the lead. Superman was all strength, but gave him a personality ( Clark act weak but was the smartest person in the room, Superman was strong yet humble). Christopher Reeve gave Superman a humanity that no other actor has captured since then.

I was pleasantly surprised when sammy watch Superman '78. I was hoping it would change his ideal thought process from the Man of Steel. I felt like a kid again seeing Sammy feeling the same way I did when I first watched Superman '78. Now he know why people screw Lee Love Superman

Ishma3l Yes, they are pretty bad. However, it shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the film. It was pretty good. Man of steal has superior cg and the movie was mediocre.

it astounds me that the only film to really capture even half the heart thats in superman 78, is captain america. ya gotta wonder why its so hard for filmakers to be able to impart credibly such earnest heroism but there the Only two i can think of that fit the description . what reeves could do in this film just standing up is remarkable , and its something i only really appreciated in my 40yr old dottage :D STILL one of the best superhero films ever.

Sammy, you and your show must see the worse DC, Wes Craven, and Sony Pictures movie ever made. And that movie was called SWAMP THING. Every bad idea in comic book films was originally shown in this one movie that nobody involved has taken responsibility for.

Superman the movie is a great movie, it's not just nostalgia that makes it good. People who defend Man of Steel never seem to get that, that Superman is supposed to be a hopeful hero, and Christopher Reeves managed to embody that 40 years ago.

Superman in man of steel an batman v superman was hopeful lol.The tone was just darker.Also Man of steels superman becoming standard superman is his arc in those films. My pal saw a screening of Justice League i know what happens in the entire film.Supermans arc is complete at the end an he becomes standard superman.

It doesn't come across very well in the films. Except when he killed the drone. I think that was the first goddamned time the sun shone in the movie. Maybe not, but it feels like it. And I hope you're right about being in JL, but I am more worried about it actually getting translated onto the screen. But I'm gonna wait for the reviews before I go see it.

See that's what the new superman movies dont get is that if your superman movie ends with him having to punch or beat someone by being physical you fail as a superman movie, the best superman stories have him beating his foes by being the exception by the being the better man because in simplest terms he is the paladin of the DC universe
@thedefinitionisthis

That... doesn't necessarily mean it's a failure. I mean, it's nice to see Superman kick some serious ass at the end. Some of the best moments of the animated Superman (including the Justice League series) is him just going mano y mano against guys like Brainiac or Darkseid. Of course, action isn't necessarily the focus.... but damn, it's a glory to see. That's one of the reasons "Superman Returns" didn't work for me. "Man of Steel", for all its story and thematic flaws, at least finally gave me a Superman that can throw down. A lil overdone, but nonetheless....
@LoneKaiser

That, we can agree on. "Superman '78" is still easily the definitive Superman movie. But coming into contemporary times, I think us fans deserve something an update of the classic character, that not only brings us the sensibilities that Donner brought, that made people believe in Superman, but also a hero who can throw down among the baddest brawlers in the universe....... just.... minus the gratuitousness haha!

Not really in real life he would have to punch an beat the villain lol.These older flicks are much sillier an fantasy based compared to Zacks films. In Zacks universe if superman stopped an said let me give a speech Zod would have blown his head off.

Is it odd that Marvel actually got the idea of Superman better than anyone else when they made the Captain America films? Really, those are better Superman films than anything post Donner, and that's from a purely thematic perspective.
